According to latest rumor Nikon already have working prototypes 0f 8K capable fullframe Mirrorless camera. At Apple’s WWDC 2019 event we have seen Canon working 8K cinema camera. Now in the same event, to demonstrate the video editing capabilities of new new Mac Pro. Apple team used a 8K movie created by Ami Vitale. We all know that Ami Vitale is a National Geographic photographer and also a brand ambassador for Nikon.
The video shown was described as 8K ProRes raw footage originating from a documentary shot in Kenya, which was said to have been captured and edited in HDR. Every single frame of 8K camera was of 33 MP. It clearly indicates that upcoming High-End Nikon Mirrorless camera Nikon Z9 may carry a 36MP FF CMOS sensor and a option to record 8K videos.
Update – The Video was Shot by RED Monstro not Nikon Z9
Update by one of Readers Bob
Guys, most of that Africa footage was shot by my buddy Mark Toia on an 8K RED. It was indeed transcoded from R3D files to ProRes because the new system isn’t optimized to decode native Red files…. yet!
EOSHD website confirms this information
– the documentary was shot on RED Monstro in 8K by Kiwi cinematographer Mark Toia of ZOOM Film and Television.

TNC exclusive: We have spotted a Nikon DSLR patent without Phase AF sensor. Although from the patent it’s very clear that the DSLR is using Hybrid AF Sensor and the camera will carry pixels block (AF segments) . These pixel block can be determined by camera CPU or by user itself. We have got hints in past that Nikon is working on Canon 200D II / SL3 / 250D competitor. More or less this patent sure confirm that News.
1. Sensor of the camera
The sensor of the camera isn’t a traditional sensor, but based on patent description it’s a hybrid sensor with dedicated AF zones.
We have added a patent translated description if you want to dig up more details. In the entire description as well as in image the Phase AF sensor part / module is missing.
2. Nikon DSLR Patent Image
So, finally Nikon is moving in into the era of Hybrid DSLR by removing the Phase AF module, however it also indicate the phase AF pixels of the camera sensor will remain always active even in viewfinder mode, display mode as well as video mode.

Translated Patent Details
The camera body 600, the lens mount 550 is coupled. The camera body 600 includes a mirror 672 on the side of the third direction than the body mount 660. Mirror 672 is fixed to the shaft so as to be rotatable between the lens unit 500 and obliquely disposed position provided inclined with respect to the subject light flux entering the third direction, and a retracted position retracted from the subject light flux .
If the mirror 672 is in the obliquely disposed position, most of the subject light beam incident through the lens unit 500 is guided is reflected on the mirror 672 in the focusing plate 652. Focusing screen 652 is disposed on the light receiving surface a position conjugate with the image pickup device 200 to visualize an object image optical system of the lens unit 500 has been formed. Formed focusing screen 652 subject image is observed from the finder 650 through a pentagonal prism 654 and the finder optical system 656.
Focusing screen 652, pentaprism 654, the mirror 672 is supported in the mirror box 670 as a structure. Image sensor 200 is attached to the mirror box 670. Mirror 672 is retracted to the retracted position, if the front curtain and rear curtain of the shutter unit 340 is opened, the subject luminous flux transmitted through the lens unit 500 reaches the light receiving surface of the imaging element 200.
The opposite side of the shutter unit 340 to the imaging device 200, the body board 620 and the rear display unit 634 are sequentially disposed. Rear display unit 634 in which the liquid crystal panel or the like is employed, located on the back of the camera body 600.The body board 620, CPU 622, electronic circuits such as the image processing unit 624 are implemented. The output of the image sensor 200 is delivered to the image processing unit 624.

Nikon is working on multilayer sensor. This isn’t the first patent of Nikon Multuilayer sensor, we have also published a article back on January 2018 of Nikon multilyer stacked CMOS sensor.
Translated text from Patent – Nikon Working on Multilayer Stacked CMOS Sensor
The upper photoelectric conversion layer 31 and the lower photoelectric conversion layer 32 are stacked on the same optical path. Upper photoelectric conversion layer 31 is composed of an organic photoelectric layer that absorbs light of a predetermined color component (the details will be described later) (photoelectric conversion).
We do hope Nikon will bring these new sensor tech to DSLR and Mirrorless cameras soon.

We have published patents before about Nikon Hybrid Sensor for DSLRs. But, from the latest patents, its look like Nikon have created their own version of Dual Pixel CMOS AF System.
Nikon dedicated AF pixel ROW inside a DSLR sensor, most importantly if they are using the same mechanism as of DPAF . Then of-course we will have sensor without Dead Hybrid AF pixels.
from patent document: example, as shown in FIG. 10, the imaging device 22, an imaging device 221 for imaging, the focus detection pixels 222a for phase difference detection, and a 222b, the focus detection pixels 222a
Patent –
Nikon Sub-Pixel AF structure
Not only that, You can clearly see Nikon DSLR display with AF segments or you can say AF groups just like we have in Canon’s. But the sub pixel arrangement is entirely different from Canon, here every pixel isn’t divided into two sub pixels. Instead of that Nikon is using two pixels for AF work each on having a sub-pixel unit.
In every pixel you can see two sub-pixel division, looks similar to dual pixel CMOS AF tech were every two sub pixels are involved in AF.
Nikon Display with dedicated AF Zones
Nikon DSLR camera Display screen will be distributed in AF Zones. Once you click the display unit AF section the AF area will be automatically zoomed [optional feature].
For sure these new sensors tech will be implemented soon in upcoming Nikon DSLRs. Camera.
