A new Hybrid Image Stabilization patent from Panasonic surfaced over the web. That, clearly shows Panasonic is working to improve the image stabilization system. Well, Panasonic is one of the world leading mirrorless makers and they do offer Hybrid IS in most of their cameras. However, they are step behind Olympus Hybrid IS systems and with E-M1 Mark II camera which offer IS upto 6.5 Stops when used with Olympus lenses.
This is not the first time, We have also published Panasonic Dual IS patent a while ago you can check here. And as you can see below I am adding the screen shot of the patent image.
Recent Patent suggest that Canon is planning to introduce Mirrors inside the Canon EOS Cinema Series so, they can also add a optical viewfinder wrapped over the EVF. So, you can get both view at a time, larger mirrored OVF view as well as EVF view.
Understanding The Canon Hybrid EVF Patent
What is Canon actually trying to do, they want to give you more display area by adding a extra layer of optical viewfinder wrapped around corners of EVF. They won’t going to overlap each other, the Mirror will have a cut out around the sensor to cover up the left-over area of the sensor. So when you are looking through the viewfinder
From Mirrorless to SLT – EOS Lineup Journey
Canon latest patent suggest that they are working on a hybrid optical viewfinder for the Canon EOS cinema lineup. The Canon EOS cinema lineup is mirrorless, that is they don’t have mirror inside as of DSLR cameras. By the way despite of having no mirror inside their system the flange distance remains same (Canon EOS Cinema EF Mount Version ) so they can easily adapt the Canon EF Mount lenses without altering the focal length or loosing any feature.
By adding a Fixed Mirror for sure the EOS Cinema lineup will lose their Mirrorless status for sure. And eventually they will going to become a SLT camera with fixed Mirror inside.
Flange distance isn’t a issue , since they are designed to use EF Mount / DSLR lenses.
SLT system type mirror – fixed and non movable
Yes the mirror Canon will going to introduce is not a movable one as we have seen in the DSLR. The mirror inside a cinema EOS lineup will always going to remain fixed at a certain point, So the user can get uninterrupted view of what they are recording.
Image / Video Quality will remain unaffacted, Since the fixed Mirror isn’t covering up the sensor. So literally we will not going to see any change in the Video quality of the camera.
The Canon EOS in my lineup doesn’t actually need a hybrid viewfinder
But why Canon is trying to add a mirror inside the cinema EOS series. well I have seen professional cinematographers those who never look through the viewfinder while creating a movie or short film, they always prefer external display in their work.
In an latest interview Panasonic said that they are not in the mood to developed PDAF Phase detect autofocus sensors for their mirrorless camera.
Take a look what Panasonic said during the interview.
When we were developing the GH4, we were discussing whether to go with phase detection AF, or hybrid AF system of contrast AF with our own DFD (depth-from- defocus) technology. We thought that by having contrast AF with DFD, we could maximize picture quality.
With phase detection AF, picture quality can be damaged
This is because with phase detection AF, picture quality can be damaged [by the phase detect pixels]. With contrast-detection AF and DFD technology, we don’t need any dedicated pixels [for autofocus] and we believe it is more precise.
Well this look quite logical to me because in the recent happening as we have already seen with the Sony A7III sensor, due to extensive fabrication of phase detect autofocus pixels above the sensor there are some time when we see some vertical or horizontal banding above the image. It is not quite often but when there is a strong backlight behind the subject the bindings become visible.
Maybe one of these reasons falling behind the idea of introducing face detect autofocus pixels inside Panasonic mirrorless cameras.
Panasonic Should Improve the AF Speed of Flagship Mirrorless
Yes, we are happy to hear that Panasonic is caring about image quality, but they should also put focus on the autofocusing is speed of their flagship mirrorless camera is specifically when we are talking about the Panasonic GH5 and Panasonic GH 5S. Take a look at the AF speed test between Panasonic G85 vs G9 vs GH5 vs GH5s
We will going to update you soon as we get any new information related to upcoming Panasonic mirrorless cameras and don’t forget that Panasonic already hinted that they are working Panasonic LX100 successor Panasonic LX200.

Sony A7 III dynamic range comparison, test published by Photons to Photos. Now, in the real world situation we can clearly see that Sony A7 III dynamic range is near about 12 stops. However, Sony claims that Sony A7 III (Amazon.com | B&H Store) camera features dynamic range upto 15 stops.
1. Sony A7 III vs. Sony A7 III vs. Sony A9
Sony A7 III vs Sony A7R III vs Sony A9. Sony A7III dynamic range is amazing and near about 12 stops same as of Sony A7R III. And, on the same side the ISO Sony A7 III is offering more ISO range at the end. Making it a even better than of A7R III. When comparing it to Sony A9 we have a very clear advantage of Dynamic range.
So, If you want excellent dynamic range as well as advance AF system. You, must get the Sony A7 III.
2. Sony A7 III vs 5D Mark IV vs 6D Mark II
As we can see Sony A7 III is offering widest dynamic range as well as more ISO range compared to the Canon 5D Mark IV as well as Canon 6D Mark II.
Canon cameras do carry Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensor, that in general features even more fast AF lock speed compared to Hybrid AF sensor based camera. But, one of the biggest disadvantage of Canon sensors are it’s limited dynamic range. So, Canon should fix this issue asap to compete against the A7 and A9 series.
3. Nikon D850 vs Sony A7 III vs Nikon D750
Nikon D850 dynamic range is better than Sony A7 III. But, Nikon D750 DR is bit weak compared to the A7 III. At the end Sony A7 III is offering more ISO range and Hybrid AF compared to Nikon D850 and Nikon D750.
Sony A7 III is one of the best Fullframe camera for sure under $2k range.
