Before we begin I must admit it it’s very hard to understand a patent literature, but after analyzing the entire document we concluded that Nikon working on a BSI CMOS AF Sensor. The sensor won’t have dead Phase AF pixels as the other Hybrid sensor have, instead of that it working principle looks same as Canon’s Dual-pixel CMOS AF sensor.
Nikon Dual Pixel AF Sensor ?
Till now only Canon was only company who was using dual pixel CMOS AF Technology. But when we have seen the new Nikon latest patent where two sub pixels involved in acquiring AF, that clearly indicates Canon isn’t alone and Nikon will soon bring a new class of Hybrid Sensors for it’s DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras in near future.
Patent Details:
BACKSIDE ILLUMINATION IMAGE
SENSOR AND IMAGE-CAPTURING DEVICE
Applicant: NIKON CORPORATION, Tokyo (JP)
Appl. No.: 15/260,994
Filed Date: Sep. 9, 2016
Pub. Date: Dec. 29, 2016
But now after looking at the patent we have got its look like Nikon is also interested in working on the same dual pixel CMOS sensor Technology.
Details from the patent document
A backside illumination image sensor that includes a semiconductor substrate with a plurality of photoelectric conversion elements and a read circuit formed on a front surface side of the semiconductor substrate, and captures an image by outputting, via the read circuit, electrical signals generated as incident light having reached a back surface side of the semiconductor substrate is received at the photoelectric conversion elements includes: a light shielding film formed on a side where incident light enters the photoelectric conversion elements, with an opening formed therein in correspondence to each photoelectric conversion element; and an on-chip lens formed at a position set apart from the light shielding film by a predetermined distance in correspondence to each photoelectric conversion element. The light shielding film and an exit pupil plane of the image forming optical system achieve a conjugate relation to each other with regard to the on-chip lens.
Details from the patent document clearly indicates that Nikon is working on a BSI CMOS sensor that will have two sub pixels that will do AF by calculating the amount of lens drive Between the two autofocus point.
The image above of the patent you will get a clear indication that Nikon will do the same as Canon has done in many of its full frame and aps-c DPAF sensor camera. we are the first website to show you the details of the patent till now it is also possible that even Canon doesn’t know about this technology that Nikon working on.

Canon new patent document surfaced over the web that shows a electronic mount interchangeable system for cameras. According to the patent the mount system can be changed or customized based on user requirements. So, its a complete technological breakthrough.
Few days ago a rumor surfaced over the web – Upcoming Canon Fullframe mirrorless to use EF lenses (see more details here) So, the big question was if Canon upcoming fullframe mirrorless will carry big and bulky EF lenses or they will have there own lens-lineup. There is a possibility that the upcoming Mirrorless may have Interchangeable Lens Mount System built-in.
Not only Mirrorless, Canon may also introduce Universal interchangeable lens mount DSLRs in future which accepts all lenses.

According to anonymous email we have received a while ago, Nikon will soon announce it’s expansion of Nikon 1 series mirrorless camera. Nikon 1 series was developed with three factors 1. Speed, 2.portability and 3. Quality and that will remain the primary features of the upcoming larger sensor based mirrorless system.
So the good thing is Nikon 1 is alive and it will compete against the latest Sony A7 series camera.
Update 15/4/2018 : In an recent interview at dpreview Nikon representatives confirmed that Nikon 1 series isn’t dead, it’s just sleeping and we may get some good new very soon.
“Nikon’s 1 system (it’s not dead, it’s just sleeping…) likewise introduced some important technologies that Nikon could presumably incorporate into a larger-format system when it feels the time is right.”
The Nikon 1 series expansion article first published here at thenewcamera.com @ 10:39 AM Monday, 26 September 2016 (GMT-4)

Photokina is over and the biggest announcement of the show according to me is Fuji GFX50S (announcement page here). To compete against Fuji GF50S and to save DSLRs & Lenses sale they both should announce a Medium Format as well as Fullframe sensor based Mirrorless system cameras.
Losing battle ground silently
If you don’t have a product then people will get it from a different manufacturers. If you want to get a fullframe mirrorless camera you have only one option – select a camera from Sony A7 series. And If we want to get a Compact Medium format mirrorless camera then we have Hasselblad X1D or Fuji GFX 50S as option in our front.
The the graph you see above clearly shows us how Sony emerged as the leader of Mirrorless camera industry. The stats taken from market research firm NPD. According to the research team Sony has emerged as the un-disputed #1 mirrorless camera maker for the last four years running.
Fact of the matter is Digital Camera do attracting more investors and young age photographers. Due to less availability of quality Mirrorless and Affordable options in CanNikon FF group user moving towards Sony and other third party manufactures.
Ignorance is bliss – Until you hit the ground
Nikon does have (only 1) Medium Format Lens Patents (See here –Article published at Sep 2013). And surprisingly Canon isn’t interested in Medium Format. Again, Just like fullframe mirrorless market ruled by Sony. It’s look like in upcoming years either Fuji, Hasselblad or Sony will take over the Medium format Mirrorless Market.
