Let’s talk about the Nikon Z90 camera. According to Ordinary Filmmaker trusted sources, the camera is in work, and the prototypes are approved for the production line, ready to replace the old-school Nikon D500 camera. The specification is not new, similar to what we have shared with you a while ago: the Nikon Z90 will carry a 33MP APS-C/DX-format hybrid CMOS autofocus sensor and advanced AI autofocus algorithms, very similar to what we have seen in the Nikon FX-format full-frame cameras
Latest Information about Nikon Z90?
Simon kicks off his video by saying: “Our trusted source has come forward once again to tell us that the Nikon Z90, a direct replacement for the Nikon D500, is now in the works and coming to the market.”
No exact date from Simon – he notes Nikon’s super secretive ( “Nikon is very quiet. Too quiet.” ) and focused on other stuff like cinema gear. But based on his chat, it’s close enough to get excited about. More on timing below.
Nikon Z90 Specs: The Key Details Simon Shared
Simon keeps it real and rumour-free from wild guesses. Here’s what he says about the Z90, broken down easily:
Sensor Size: It’s a DX (APS-C) camera with 32-33 megapixels. So, in terms of sensor resolution, information remains the same as we also have shared previously in our post
Speed: Up to 15 frames per second (fps). Most probably, he is talking about the MAX mechanical shutter speed.
Who It’s For: obviously photographers looking for a mini Z9 camera, an Multipurpose camera made for DX pro., Wildlife photographers who want “more reach” (the crop sensor makes lenses feel longer, like turning a 400mm into 600mm) but don’t need top low-light skills or the pricey Nikon Z9. If you’re pro-level and chasing magazine covers in dim light, stick with Z9. But for sunny safaris? Z90 shines.
Nikon Z90 Release Timeline
According to Simon from Ordinary Filmmaker in his video, the Nikon Z90 release timeline remains uncertain and delayed, with no imminent announcement expected before 2026. He reports from a trusted source that the camera “is now in the works and coming to the market,” but stresses Nikon’s extreme secrecy and heavy focus on the ZR Cinema line, including four new cine lenses within the next six months. Simon explicitly states that “I wouldn’t expect any other new Nikon announcements in the short term that don’t fall under the ZR Cinema line,” and with the February 2026 Olympics approaching too quickly for a Z9 Mark II refresh (as per rumors), stills cameras like the Z90 appear sidelined for several months. This suggests a potential launch in mid-to-late 2026 at the earliest

Chinese sources suggest that Nikon’s mysterious model is coming this year. So far, we know that the Nikon Z9 Mark II, Nikon ZR, Nikon Z7 III, and Nikon Z Video cameras are in the announcement pipeline. At the very same time, Nikon is also planning multiple cinema-related announcements. Based on Nikon’s announcement patterns and current rumors, several cameras are expected in late 2025 and early 2026. Take a look list of upcoming cameras
As in the table, you have seen all possible lists of cameras in BOLD, those that are expected to arrive. So, what else can we expect from Nikon? Nikon Z70 or Nikon Z90?
It, almost confirmed now, Nikon is gearing up for the professional ZR series camera, we can expect the introduction of ZR DX lineup of Camera in near future to offer a comprehensive video range to beginner content creators and cinematographers, but that all known to us we are not able to keep the ZR in “Mysterious Model” category.
Nikon ZR DX Range
Video Dedicated DX Mirroless Camera Announcement on its WAY? We already have the Sony ZV series lineup for beginner cinematographers and content creators. Canon recently announced their first V series camera, the Canon R50V., its logical to expect the same kind of move from Nikon. In the entire DX lineup, we have only one camera for content creators, the Nikon Z30, which badly needs an update if Nikon wants to keep a revenue share in entry entry-level content creator market. Apart from this, Nikon Z30, all the DX and FX lines of cameras are made for HYBRID SHOOTERS.
Nikon Z70 / Z90
None of the Nikon APS-C DX Mirrorless camera bodies have IBIS inside them. We do not have any pro model in the Nikon DX lineup after the Nikon D500, the Nikon D500 was announced back in January 2016 and discontinued in January 2022.
Over the past year, we have been getting strong hints about the development of the Nikon Z70 / Z90 camera, and one of the prototypes of the DX Z Mirrorless bodies is also being tested with Global shutter sensors. Be assured, Nikon will not put the Global shutter sensor-based cameras in the market; they will initially use partially or fully stacked CMOS sensors around a 26- 32MP Range paired up with the latest generation of Expeed image processors. Although we are waiting for more confirmation on the set of information we received a while ago.
So, these two are the possibilities under the hood of the Nikon Mysterious Model. What are you waiting for? Which specific model, let me know in the comments box

We keep getting very strong information from reliable sources that Nikon is developing a high-end APS-C DX-format camera, not a direct successor to the Z50 Mark II.
The next set of Rumor is coming from a source that has seen a prototype with a working 33MP APS-C Format sensor, he was using the name of Nikon Z90 camera.
The Nikon Z90 will be a camera that fits above the Z50 DX-format mid-range.
Here is a look at the list of specifications we have received from the source:
Nikon Z90

4k 60fps
15 FPS Mech

TNC Take: Based on the frequency of rumors we are getting about the next DX-format camera, we are almost sure a DX-format camera is coming in Q4 of 2024.
Nikon Z90 is said to be a mini version of Nikon Z9 camera with flagship level core specification.
Nikon Z90 Rumored Specification
Nikon working on a Higher resolution DX-format sensor for its upcoming flagship camera. As you before they put a flagship in the market they do work on several prototypes of the camera and test heavily.
Initial specs of one of the Nikon Z90 Prototypes
A scaled-down version of the highly-anticipated Z8 camera, with a smaller form factor and a 33MP / 26Mp APS-C/DX sensor. Firmware (under development) and 6K video capabilities, making it an ideal replacement for the D500. Dual card slots will also be included, with one supporting XQD cards and the other supporting SD cards
Finally, a very tough competitor for the Canon R7 camera coming, the Nikon Z90 is said to feature a stacked CMOS Sensor instead of FSI or BSI to deliver the MAX speed possible in burst mode and without any rolling shutter effect.
