Canon EOS R Vs Canon 5D Mark IV - TonyNorthUp

A nice review / comparison of Canon EOS R (Amazon | B&H) camera with the Canon 5D mark IV (and even Sony A7III). As we all know Canon in an interview Canon representatives confirmed that EOS R carry a newly redesigned sensor, but at as you can see even TonyNorthup while testing, was not able to find out the any difference between the image quality of both the camera.

But the good thing is Canon 5D mark IV camera is available at $3000 whereas the Canon EOS R camera available at $2399 ($700 less than the 5D Mark IV). At the same time you’re are also getting new Digic 8 Image processor, more advance AF system and

Canon Next Fullframe Mirrorless Camera Doesn't Have Multi-Function Bar

Nomen Nescio is out from jungle to share some very exclusive information with us, according to him the early prototypes of Canon next entry level Fullframe Mirrorless camera doesn’t have Multi-Function Bar.

Canon K433 is Next Mirrorless Camera

According to recent rumors from Japanese trusted rumor mills Canon registered a new Fullframe Mirrorless camera (model code K433). The camera was having a 26 Megapixel Fullframe DPAF sensor at the time of registration. So, it’s a very clear indication that next generation of Canon Fullframe entry level Mirrorless camera will have a Redesigned 26MP Sensor of the Canon 6D mark II camera.

Canon High-end Mirrorless Models to have Built-in Image Stabilization and more...

Canon’s head of ICB product development team interview published at a Japanese website. It do reveled a lot of thing that, including that Canon may implement Butil-in image stabilization system in future cameras. Click here to read out the major translated parts of the interview.

(Translated) Major Points of Canon ICB product development team interview

  • (Replying to the question of “Why didn’t you disclose the flange back distance at the announcement?”) Although the flange back distance is 20mm, the more important number is the back focus distance, i.e. the distance between the last element and the sensor. This will change from lens to lens.
  • Though based on an existing sensor, this is a newly developed sensor, with new DPAF mechanism and microlenses. You should see improved high ISO performance over 5D4.
  • EOS R should give better image quality than 5D4 thanks to DIGIC 8 allowing in-body DLO and better noise reduction resulting in 1/3 stop higher maximum ISO.
  • The system can be operated without the multi-function bar or the control ring, so some future R models may not have them. EF lenses with control rings are unlikely because the ring depends on new electrical contacts introduced by the RF mount.
  • The additional freedom in lens design can be used to make lenses smaller, or improve image quality, meaning that the F2.8 zooms announced as pipelines won’t necessarily end up being smaller.
  • Canon had a policy against IBIS on DSLRs, but this is not the case for MILCs. Lack of IBIS on EOS R was a result of compromises over body size, cost and heat dissipation for this particular model; they do think it has merits, and will consider it for future models depending on the nature of the camera body.
  • EOS R is primarily targeting mid-level DSLR users looking to move upmarkeg. They concede that the R system may be too high priced for existing M users. (There is no discussion about R/M mount compatibility, unfortunately.)
  • This is a middle-segment camera, a 5D class body, and they do expect to release higher- and lower- end bodies. In particular they expect to see demand for high pixel count bodies to counter the competition.
  • RF mount cinema EOS is a possibility. Not sure if anyone except high-end pros need 8K.

So, that’s was the major points of the interview. As you can see Canon Mirrorless Team do have the capability to introduce built-in image stabilization system, but due to Cost nd body size issue they have decided not to add it on the recently announced mid-range Canon EOS R Mirrorless camera.

Canon EOS R vs Sony A7III vs Nikon Z6

Canon EOS R vs Sony A7III vs Nikon Z6

Ok let’s talk about the Canon EOS camera, the camera cost approx falls under dollar 2000 category which is same as you pay for the Sony A7 III and the Nikon Z6.

Canon EOS R is a Canon 6D Mark II camera with a 5D Mark IV sensor and the processor coming from EOS M50.

Canon EOS R – A Entry Level Full Frame Camera

So canon actually announced entry level full frame mirrorless camera , you can say it’s a Canon EOS m50 mirrorless camera in terms of full frame mirrorless camera . With having some kind of Limited environment, let me explain why I am saying this

Let’s take a look at the Major specification of the camera

The Nikon FTZ Mount adaptor available at $249 – Available at B&H Store

Buy Nikon Z6 camera from B&H | Amazon.com

let’s talk about the set of features that I really like inside the Canon EOS R camera

  • 30.3MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC 8 Image Processor
  • UHD 4K30 Video; C-Log & 10-Bit HDMI Out
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF, 5655 AF Points
  • 3.69m-Dot OLED Electronic Viewfinder
  • 3.15″ 2.1m-Dot Swivel Touchscreen LCD
  • Expanded ISO 50-102400, 8 fps Shooting
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, SD UHS-II Card Slot
  • Multi-Function Bar, Dual Pixel RAW

Canon EOS R vs Sony A7III vs Nikon Z6 – Specs Comparison

Price of Canon EOS R

The price of the camera, the price of the camera is in the reach of most of the Pro APS-C and it falls under $2000 category. But at the same time the camera is slightly more costlier than the Sony A7III and Nikon Z6 camera.  However it is expected to see a price drop if $400 in next 4 to 6 months.  But at the same time the EOS R is giving you more solid specs compared to the Sony A7 III or the Nikon Z6.

Canon is Using OLD Sensor Tech

Canon is using old sensor Technology inside the new Canon EOS R camera. As we all know that Canon nowhere mentions that they are using a new kind of a sensor with the new Canon EOS R digital camera, you can check out the world wide press releases of the Canon EOS R. So that clearly means we are getting the exactly same sensor of the Canon 5D Mark 4 camera.

That’s isn’t a big issue that Canon EOS R is using 5D Mk IV sensor, but it do becomes outdated when your competitors are using BSI CMOS sensor. And as we all know the new Nikon Z6 camera as well as the Sony A7 III camera using BSI CMOS sensors inside it, so if we will going to compare them with the Canon EOS R camera, then we have some dynamic range as well as low light performance issue with the Canon.

No Built-in Image Stabilization

They took a lot of time to make the EOS Mirrorless camera, the Canon EOS R camera dosn’t have built-in image stabilization system why ? Butil-in Image stabilization system has become a norm in Mirrorlss cameras.  So, Canon should introduce built-in IS system with upcoming Canon EOS R cameras.

Giving out More Than the Competition

Now let’s find out the the list of some major specs that really very attractive and not present inside even Sony A9 and Nikon Z7 camera, so let’s see some mind blowing features of the Canon EOS R camera

So, above all that’s really a very impressive number, having more than 5K AF points is literally feels like Sony and Nikon giving you nothing for the price.

More than 5000 Auto-Focus in points

Well it is the first camera in the history which carries more than 5000 autofocusing points on its own. This is the first time when can an is actually disclosing the number of autofocusing points in a dual pixel CMOS autofocus sensor, I am following-up the Canon from the 70D announcement when Canon first Dual pixel sensor was introduced and at the same time we also know that Canon engineers are working on Quad Pixel CMOS AF sensor.

But even after that till now can I never disclose the number of pixels working all together to acquire AF. Finally they disclosed and it’s really insane to see that more than 5000 autofocusing pixels have there are you can see Sab pixels working all together to acquire autofocus.

AF Sensitivity -6Ev

That’s really a great news, the best camera available right now to work in dark light situation. As we all know the Sony and Nikon both falling behind when you talk about the AF sensitivity.

But, a Big BUT

Canon introduce eye AF tracking feature inside the Canon EOS R camera and that’s really a cool thing to have. But, at the same time the the Eve AF is not as good as we have seen in the Sony A7III or A9, at the same time the Eye AF tracking is not available in video AF mode.

Flange Distance isn’t so good in Canon FF Mirrorless

About the flange distance of the Canon EOS camera, I am a disappointed by what they made after taking so much time literally they have made a camera which have the largest flange distance among the class of full frame mirrorless cameras. Let’s talk about the Sony A7 III have 18mm,  Nikon Z6 have the sjortest 16 MM lens distance, and Canon EOS are camera that arrived in the last have a longest distance of 20mm. Having less distance improves the Dynamic range, ISO performance and color reproduction of the sensor.

Big Mount = Big & Bright Lenses

Introduction of a big 54 mm Mount. The amount is very large and just similar to or you can say 1 mm less than the Nikon Zseries mount.

The Bigger mount = Bigger / better lenses = more light = Better Image

That’s why we are getting the 28-75mm F2 L lens and not a F2.8 like conventional DSLRs. So even if you are using a Canon 5D Mark 4 sensor, the image quality you get from 24-70 F2 lens will have better DR, Color depth and Noise level compared to 5D IV.

In near future Canon may also develop F0.95 lenses for their mirrorless system cameras, and third party lens makers specifically sigma is able to create some amazing products for EOR R camera.

Big Mount + Shorter Flange Distance compared to Canon Dullframe DSLRs

New lenses are made for a big Mount which is of course bigger than the full frame Mount of conventional DSLRs. And the optics used to develop those lenses are fairly large and passes light more frequently compared to the older L series lenses and at the same time the flange distance is also short. We are confirmed that new camera will going to have better dynamic range and better low light performance compared to the full frame DSLR as we have already seen.

Digic 8 and Compressed RAW files

Introduction of new Digic 8 image processor from Canon,  Digic 8 image processor is not only just a new processing engine, the new image processor bring some new image decoding algorithm as well as we have also seen the introduction of new see raw format file. which was first seen in the EOS m50 camera. Canon dual pixel raw is also stretching its limits in the new Canon EOS R mirrorless camera, so it’s opportunity to photographers of course to get some more dimension in the editing of images.

so you are getting a lot of new stuff in the new Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless camera.

Video Modes

Take a look at the Major difference between the video specs

  • If you want to create 4K videos with Canon camera then you have to be very selective with your lenses. Since you are getting 1.7X crop factor with the camera.
  • 10 Bit 4:2: output us available with Nikon Z6 and Canon EOS R via HDMI cable, Sony remains limited to 8 Bit 4:2:2.
  • Log files in Canon and Nikon (C & N – Log) can be recorded externally only. Sony A7 III record S-log, S-log2 and HLG in SD card which is really very impressive.
  • Canon is the only camera which features super fast Dualpixel CMOS AF and a vari-angle touch display which is highly essential  to shoot youtube videos.

More to Come…

Conclusion

You have to very specific with your choice, if you are a youtuber you may only prefer the Canon EOS R camera, again if you need better low-light performance with more dynamic range you should go with the Nikon Z6 camera. If you are looking for best budget solution then you should go with Sony A7 III and Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 RXD lens.
