Canon R1 and Canon R5 Mark II Are Safe from Global Shutter Sensor Syndrome

According to the latest news we have from the rumor mill, Canon’s upcoming cameras, which include the flagship mirrorless Canon R1 and the Canon R5 Mark 2, will not use the Global Shutter sensor. The Global Shutter sensor is still far from being included in Canon bodies; it’s not coming soon inside them as per the latest setup information.

And as we all know, even Sony’s A9 Mark III camera is struggling with low-light performance issues. We don’t think Canon will take that risk with their flagship camera body or even the R5 Mark 2 camera.

Canon R5 Mark II in Q1 of 2024 and R1 in Q4 of 2024

According to a well-known YouTube content creator “Jan Wegener” who also predicted the arrival of the many Canon and third-party camera makers well before their announcement, and recently also very clearly hinted that the Canon 200 to 800mm lens is coming prior to any website or rumor mill.

Now in his latest vlogs, he very clearly said that the Canon R5 Mark 2 camera will arrive in the first quarter of 2024 and the Canon flagship mirrorless camera, the EOS R1, will arrive in the 4th quarter of 2024.

Not only that, he also confirmed that there will be several Canon PRO photographers who will be using the Canon EOS R1 camera during the Olympics, but for testing purposes only. Although we can expect some sort of development announcement at the beginning of the year, the final set of announcements, as told by him, is about to happen at the end of 2024.

Canon R5 Mark II Coming on Feb 2024 [Rumor]

According to the latest rumors, the Canon R5 Mark II camera to arrive in February of 2024. The reason is quite simple. Canon has a habit of releasing its flagship / Pro Cameras  just prior to the Olympic games. We have seen this pattern in the past as well.

So, in 2024, the Olympics are set to start in July. Therefore, there is a high probability that Canon will release the EOS R5 Mark II camera.

At the same time, we have heard rumors about the Canon EOS R1 flagship camera for the past year. If these rumors are true, then the timelines for the Canon EOS R5 Mark II camera and the Canon EOS R1 are pretty close to each other and both are expected to arrive before the 2024 Olympics.

So, we have to wait for further confirmation. But with the set of all the information we have, one thing is for sure: either the Canon R5 Mark II or the Canon EOS R1 will arrive before the Olympics of 2024.

Canon R1 vs Canon R5 Mark II: The Ultimate Battle

So the big question is: Canon R1 or Canon R5 Mark 2 camera – which camera will arrive early?

First, let’s discuss the available set of technology that Canon has right now. The Canon R5 has a 45-megapixel front-side illuminated dual pixel CMOS sensor. It is one of the highest resolution sensors known to us being used inside a Canon camera body. Unfortunately, the sensor is an FSI sensor, not a BSI.

The 24-megapixel stacked CMOS sensor of the Canon R3 professional flagship full-frame mirrorless camera is the most advanced sensor we have seen to date inside a Canon that uses stacked CMOS sensor technology.

If you look at the rumors in the past, it has been said that the upcoming Canon R1 camera may have a hybrid sensor that uses the resolution of the Canon R5 and the technology of the Canon R3 camera sensor.

So why is Canon so late? Nikon and Sony both announced their flagship cameras back in 2021. Nikon announced their Z9 and Sony announced their Sony Alpha A1 professional full-frame camera.

Now in 2023, we have the Nikon Z8 camera which features almost the same core specification as the Nikon Z9 at an affordable price tag. Similarly, Sony is preparing to announce the Sony A93 camera which will inherit almost the same core specification that we have seen in the Sony Alpha A1 flagship camera.

Now the big question arises: will Canon put its 45-megapixel CMOS sensor inside an R5 Mark 2 camera body and prepare to compete against the upcoming Sony A93 or the existing Nikon Z8 camera?

The second option for Canon is that they will move at their own pace and announce the Canon R1 camera before the 2024 Olympics. After a year of announcing the Canon R1, sometime in late 2025, we may have a Canon R5 Mark 2 camera with almost similar core specifications that we have seen in Canon R1.

The major issue among all these things is Canon’s slow speed of development and announcement of cameras.  They are not able to compete against market competitors Nikon and Sony. They are very late with their products, specifically their full-frame flagship cameras. Since they are late, they are lagging behind in competition and losing their consumer base who are attracted towards Sony and specifically Nikon for their products like Nikon Z8.

Based on the technical limits that we have discussed earlier and Canon’s development speed, we may expect the arrival of a Canon R1 camera with a redesigned and redeveloped 45-megapixel full-frame stacked CMOS sensor with dual DIGIC X image processors before the Olympics. Even if they wish to update the R5 Mark 2 camera between now and the Olympics, they may put subtle upgrades just to fill the gap with a new camera body.

So, at the end before we wrap up this article, it looks more reasonable to have a Canon R5 Mark II camera at the end of 2023, with a stacked CMOS sensor. And Canon R1 as expected will officially arrive sometime in Feb/March 2024.

Canon R5 Mark II Expected Core Specs

  • 45MP Full-Frame Stacked BSI CMOS Sensor
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, Eye Control AF
  • Sensor-Shift 5-Axis Image Stabilization
  • 40 fps E. Shutter, 12 fps Mech. Shutter
  • 8K 60 Raw and 4K120 10-Bit Internal Video
  • 2″ 4.2m-Dot Vari-Angle Touchscreen LCD
  • 76m-Dot EVF with 120 fps Refresh Rate
  • Wired LAN and 5 GHz Wi-Fi Support
  • Multi-Function Shoe, Built-In Vert. Grip

These are the possible set of core specifications that we are expecting from the upcoming  Canon R5 camera.

Canon’s EOS R5 is Out - TWO New Models are In

According to the latest rumors from Rumor Mill, Canon may announce two different replacements for the existing Canon R5 camera. One will carry an existing 45-megapixel sensor and the other may have a higher resolution sensor. The rumor mill added he split will be similar to what we have seen in the EOS 5D series.

After the 5D Mark III announcement, Canon also added the Canon 5DS and the 5DS R cameras as higher resolution DSLR options and further continued the 5D series with the 5D Mark IV announcement.

The biggest question is why this rumor has occurred now and not before. Since we already have rumors of the Nikon Z8 and its leaked specification that it will feature the same sensor we have seen in the Nikon Z9. At the same time, just a few days ago, we shared possible specifications of the upcoming Nikon Z7 Mark III camera, the specs say the forthcoming camera will feature a 61-megapixel sensor – the same sensor that we have seen in the Sony A7R4A and A7R5 cameras. This means Nikon will continue both the series Nikon Z8 and Nikon Z7.

In the same fashion, Canon may release two different models with high-resolution sensors that will match and compete against Sony’s A7R series (A7R IVa and A7R V) as well as the upcoming Nikon Z7 Mark III, in addition to a regular Canon R5 camera update with the same 45-megapixel sensor we may have and Canon R5 R camera with 60+ MP Sensor.
