Viltrox Mirrorless Camera Rumors - Latest Updates

Viltrox Camera Image

Viltrox Mirrorless Camera – Creative Concept by Thenewcamera Team

Viltrox is already a very well-known name in the third-party lens maker list, and the brand is known for making high-quality budget lenses for leading camera makers like Sony, Nikon, Panasonic L-mount and obviously they are waiting for Canon approval. Once they get approved, we will see many Viltrox lenses for RF mount.

Viltrox camera development — is it hype or reality?

In an August 2025 interview with The Phoblographer, the Viltrox management addressed the camera development question in a very unique way that sparked debate over the internet.

Viltrox rep said:

“As for cameras, while our current focus remains firmly on lens development, we are actively exploring adjacent technologies that enhance the photographic experience. Our commitment is to create a seamless and responsive ecosystem for creators, and we will continue to innovate with that mission in mind.”

So, as you can very clearly see in the first line of the statement, they are neither confirming nor denying a camera. This has sparked widespread speculation and debate over the internet. They are clearly not denying the possibility of mirrorless system camera development.

Viltrox is poised for camera development

Autofocus expertise fuels camera innovation

Viltrox has extensive experience in the development of autofocus systems Lenses for different brands, like they are working for Sony E-mount, Nikon Z-mount, Canon, and Fujifilm X-mount. Although they have made lenses for Canon through reverse engineering, as a result Canon has imposed a partial ban on Viltrox for making autofocus lenses for their mount. Yes, they are in talks with Canon representatives, and maybe officially they will enter into the RF lens-making business by 2026.

They already have a handful of information related to the AF algorithms of brands across the globe. Their research and development team exactly knows how a lens and camera communicate with each other, so this entire knowledge reduces the learning curve for building a camera system that supports advanced autofocus features inside it. The entire development process is not going to start from scratch — they already have the baseline developed and they are working on it.

Overcoming camera system compatibility challenges

By entering into the lens business, they have already faced a lot of difficulties in managing different ecosystems by dealing with sensor interaction with their lenses and their behaviour, electronic signalling, and most importantly the firmware update behaviours they have to manage to maintain the autofocus performance of their lenses across multiple brands. So they are in a strong position to design a very efficient mirrorless system that will avoid common pitfalls and compatibility issues they have generally faced across the different brands.

China tech hub powers Viltrox advancements

Viltrox gets a major benefit from China’s role as a global tech hub. They have access to a vast supply chain of sensors, processors, and optics, where technology can be easily shared with smartphone giants like Huawei and Xiaomi. The entire ecosystem of cutting-edge development, available components, and advanced manufacturing facilities lowers the cost barriers to producing an entirely self-made mirrorless camera system. All these environments and associated factors will surely help Viltrox to innovate in camera development.

Viltrox is Expanding – L-Mount Alliance and Fujifilm GF compatibility

Viltrox is now exploring a partnership with the L-Mount Alliance, with an update expected in late 2025.

Viltrox rep said:

“As for the L-mount system, we expect to have a clearer update on our progress within this year. Looking ahead, we aim to bring Viltrox lens solutions to more camera systems and serve a broader community of photographers worldwide.”

So even for the L-Mount ecosystem cameras supported by Panasonic, Leica, and Sigma, a huge range of lenses are coming in 2026.

Fujifilm GF medium format support

Viltrox is now also assessing the compatibility and scope for the development of Fujifilm GF medium format camera lenses. You can see their expansion — they are now entering the medium format camera lenses market. In the near future, they will be targeting photographers who are seeking high-resolution performance at a reasonable price.

Viltrox Mirrorless Camera System

Viltrox Mirrorless system camera can disrupt the entire market

We think these are the three strong reasons that a Viltrox mirrorless camera system could capitalise on:

    1. Affordability – They are creating super affordable/budget lenses by operating everything from China. They have recently announced the Viltrox AF 25mm f/1.7 Air lens at $175, which is literally impossible for brands like Canon, Nikon, and Sony. If they can do so, then what would happen if they announced their mirrorless system camera at a very reasonable price tag? That would surely disturb the entire mirrorless camera market.
    2. Technical expertise – Viltrox’s technical expertise is already at the next level. Their efficiency in dealing with various AF algorithms across multiple brands and maintaining AF synchronicity without being hampered by the multiple firmware updates, all of which led them to develop proficiency in AF algorithms. If a Viltrox mirrorless system camera arrives, its hybrid autofocus system will be on par with existing mirrorless system cameras on the market, since they have access to all the tech it needs to be.
    3. China tech ecosystem – The most important thing, as already discussed, will allow Viltrox to develop and manufacture a super-budget mirrorless camera that no one would have ever imagined.

As of August 2025, at the time I am writing this article, Viltrox has not confirmed nor denied the possibility of a mirrorless camera. Their expertise in autofocus, compatibility solutions, and China’s tech ecosystem positions them well for a potential camera launch. With L-Mount and Fujifilm GF updates expected by year-end, Viltrox is poised to shape the photography market in 2025. Stay tuned for more developments as Viltrox continues to innovate.

DJI Osmo 360 vs Insta360 X5 - 2025 Comparison

DJI OSMO 360 vs INSTA 360 X5

If you are looking for the best 8K 360 action camera in 2025, you have the DJI Osmo 360 as well as the Insta360 X5. In this particular article, we are going to compare both. One features a larger 1-inch sensor, and the other utilises 5th-generation technology — the Insta360 X5 is the fifth generation of the 360 action camera series. So, which one has superior technology and which one will give you clearer, better low-light HDR videos? We will compare both and determine which one is best suited for you.

Table of Contents

  • Introduction
  • Still Image Performance Comparison
  • Video Performance
  • 360 Video Performance
  • Real-World Performance Insights
  • Editing and Workflow
  • Accessories and Ecosystems
  • Conclusion: Which 8K 360 Camera Wins in 2025?

Who captures better still images — the DJI Osmo 360 or the Insta360 X5?

The Insta360 X5 is actually marketed as an 8K 360-degree action camera, and on the other side, we have the DJI Osmo 360, which uses a larger 1-inch sensor. So let’s have a quick look at the major features of both, and then we will compare.

Still image performance comparison

  • DJI Osmo 360 — high-resolution powerhouse  – Let me explain why. The reason is that the DJI Osmo 360 uses dual 1-inch sensors to deliver stunning 120 MP high-resolution images. The images have the highest possible amount of detail due to the 120 MP resolution, and at the same time, they are captured on the largest sensor area. The shadows and highlights are very well controlled, and the camera also has a Super Night mode that shines in low light and produces ultra-clean images with minimal grain or noise, whatever you call it. So the DJI Osmo 360 is an ideal camera for those who are professional photographers and love to have details with less noise in their JPEG outputs, although that also creates limited flexibility.
  • Insta360 X5 — the flexible editing master  – The Insta360 X5 is limited to 72 MP still images, and most of the processing of the Insta360 X5 is done in-camera. The images of the Insta360 are also vibrant in colour and offer low noise, especially if you use single-lens mode. The Insta360 also offers RAW DNG support. Overall, having a smaller sensor is a bit less effective in low-light scenarios, where the DJI Osmo 360 holds up very well.

Still Image Comparison Table

Feature DJI Osmo 360 Insta360 X5
Image Sensor 1″-Type CMOS (2 Lenses) 1/1.28″-Type CMOS (2 Lenses)
Sensor Resolution 120 MP (15,520 x 7,760) 72 MP (11,904 x 5,952)
Still Image Format JPEG DNG / INSP
Maximum Resolution 120 MP, 30.72 MP (6400 x 4800) 72 MP, 18 MP (5,888 x 2,944)

Verdict — The DJI Osmo 360 is the best high-resolution 360-degree camera, especially if you love to shoot still images in low-light situations, whereas the Insta360 X5 offers RAW images and single-lens versatility. But I will give more marks to DJI at this moment due to the presence of a larger sensor and better low-light sensitivity, combined with high resolution.

Video performance

  • DJI Osmo 360 — cinematic versatility – The DJI Osmo 360 camera offers 8K video recording up to 50 frames per second and 4K videos up to 120 frames per second in single-lens mode. It delivers cinematic footage with 10-bit D-Log M, enabling professional grading in the recorded file. As you know, the DJI Osmo 360 uses a larger 1-inch sensor, and that leads to cleaner low-light 360 footage. Even the shadows have details, and the bright areas (highlights) also exhibit a greater amount of detail due to the better dynamic range of the sensor.
  • Insta360 X5 — quick and vibrant – The Insta360 X5 records 8K videos at 30 fps, further enhanced by PureVideo AI noise reduction. When we use this specific software, which is available in the Insta360 5th generation camera, it cleans up noise in the entire video. It performs exceptionally well in low-light environments, especially when using single-lens mode. The second thing we have is Adaptive Tone Mode, which balances the colour instantly. Since Insta360 has been making 360 cameras for years and this is their 5th generation camera, in-camera software noise reduction is very refined — Insta360 X5 performs really very well.

Video Comparison Table

Feature DJI Osmo 360 Insta360 X5
Max Video Resolution 7680 x 3840 (8K) @ 25/30/48/50 fps 7680 x 3840 (8K) @ 30/25/24 fps
Video Format MP4 (H.265/HEVC), 10-bit D-Log M MP4 (H.265/H.264), 180 Mb/s
Frame Rates Up to 240 fps (3840 x 960) Up to 120 fps (4K)
Single-Lens Modes 4K120 (170° FOV), 5K60 (155° FOV) 4K60, MaxView 4K30 (170° FOV)

Verdict — As you know, the DJI Osmo 360 camera features a larger sensor as well as higher frame rates while recording 4K videos.  And you also get broader dynamic range, giving you more opportunity to work with shadows and highlights while color grading. On the other side we have the Insta360 X5 — it excels for quick, vibrant footage with AI enhancements. So if you want fast footage that looks really good out of the camera, then Insta360 X5 should be your priority.

360 video performance

  • DJI Osmo 360 — professional-grade immersion – The DJI Osmo 360 camera has the advantage of recording 8K videos at 50 frames per second, paired with HorizonSteady and RockSteady 3.0 image stabilization. With the help of these advanced EIS systems, the DJI Osmo 360 is able to deliver ultra-smooth footage.
The only issue someone may face is external stitching in the workflow.
  • Insta360 X5 — seamless creativity – The Insta360 X5’s 8K video recording mode is limited to 30 frames per second, although it also delivers smooth footage while recording 360 video. The other advantages we get are AI reframing modes, time-lapse, and 8K TimeShift. All these are vibrant modes developed over time depending on user demand. The most important thing is the in-camera stitching of multiple files, which simplifies the editing process — something that is missing in the DJI Osmo 360. They may bring it with an update or maybe in the next version. Some people find it useful to edit manually, but for those who love fast-paced editing, the Insta360 is the call.

360 Video Comparison Table

Feature DJI Osmo 360 Insta360 X5
Field of View 360° 360° (170° per lens)
Max Resolution 7680 x 3840 (8K) @ 25/30/48/50 fps 7680 x 3840 (8K) @ 30/25/24 fps
Stitching Method External program required In-camera or app-based
Special Features HorizonSteady, RockSteady 3.0 AI reframing, 11K time-lapse

Verdict — Overall, the DJI Osmo 360 is professional-friendly, offering a larger sensor and faster frame rates for more control over the workflow. At the same time, the Insta360 X5 prioritises creators’ time and gives you basic in-camera stitching modes and preloaded software features that help you speed up your workflow.

Real-world performance insights

Low light and weather performance

  • DJI Osmo 360 — The camera features a larger 1-inch sensor and Super Night mode, producing clean and grain-free footage in rainy, overcast nights, especially when you face situations with strong shadows and highlights.
  • Insta360 X5 — PureVideo mode. The Insta360 X5 is powered by dual AI processors, and that’s why, despite having a smaller sensor, it is able to deliver clear and vibrant low-light footage when used in single-lens mode — and it does it very effectively.

Battery life

  • DJI Osmo 360 – Features a 1950 mAh battery offering around 100 minutes of recording time while using 8K video.
  • Insta360 X5 – Features a 2400 mAh battery that delivers 88 minutes of backup while recording 8K and approximately 185 minutes of backup while recording 5.7K in Endurance mode.
  • Standby battery power consumption is better managed in the Insta360 X5. The Osmo 360 needs an update to improve its battery efficiency performance.

Audio performance

  • DJI Osmo 360 — Features 4-channel AAC audio capability and has DJI Mic / Mic 2 compatibility, so you don’t need any extra receiver. You just buy the DJI wireless microphones and they will automatically pair with the DJI Osmo 360 camera.
  • Insta360 X5 — Has Wind Guard and intelligent audio mode so your sound is clear in windy conditions, but it doesn’t support any external microphone like the Osmo 360 does.

Battery and Audio Comparison Table

Feature DJI Osmo 360 Insta360 X5
Battery Capacity 1950mAh, ~100 min at 8K 2400mAh, ~88 min at 8K, ~185 min Endurance
Battery Test 92% after filming, 84% overnight 97% after filming
Audio 4-channel AAC, DJI Mic support Wind Guard, intelligent audio

Verdict — Insta360 X5 offers better battery life due to better battery management during standby mode. In audio, DJI Osmo 360 excels because of its external microphone capability. In low light, the camera with the larger sensor will perform better.

Editing and workflow

  • DJI Osmo 360 — DJI Studio and Mimo provide excellent subject tracking and locking onto moving or running subjects. 3D object tracking works flawlessly in DJI Studio or the Mimo app. But while editing the DJI Osmo 360 files, the limited reframing options and odd file naming in DJI Studio sometimes hinder the workflow. Although we do have an option to use the Adobe Premiere plugin – that’s a plus point.
  • Insta360 X5 — Insta360 Studio’s underwater colour tuning is exceptional, turning everything into vivid, true-to-life colours. Other than this, ND filter correction and AI Frame automatically frame your shots accurately. Since the Insta360 X5 is the 5th generation of the Insta360 series, in this time they have developed their app very well, so a user can easily process files without any hassle.

Verdict — The Insta360 X5 editing suite is much more mature and user-friendly. The DJI Osmo 360 excels in tracking and low-light performance, and it also has the basic editing tools a camera should have, but over time it will evolve — not as simple as Insta360 Studio right now.

Accessories and ecosystems

  • DJI Osmo 360 — We have already listed the top 10 best accessories for the DJI Osmo 360 camera, including a battery grip that enhances performance. This is just the beginning — very soon we will have multiple third-party accessories for this camera. Ecosystem-wise, DJI is mature and offers cross-system connectivity, including integration of their wireless mics with the camera.
  • Insta360 X5 — Right now, there are lots of third-party accessories available for the Insta360 X5, so you can easily mount your X5 on a motorcycle, bike helmet, or anywhere else. Since a lot of third-party accessories are available, accessories-wise the Insta360 X5 is a clear winner — but ecosystem-wise, DJI Osmo wins.

Conclusion — which 8K 360 camera wins in 2025?

The DJI Osmo 360 delivers exceptional still images and 8K50 video with its larger 1-inch sensor, so you will be getting professional-grade quality output from this tiny camera in ultra-low light or bright conditions. However, when it comes to editing, external stitching of multiple files may not be convenient for some users since it takes more time. On the other hand, the Insta360 X5 does in-camera stitching, and the app also supports AI-driven editing.

Final verdict

  • DJI Osmo 360 — One of the best professional 360 cameras ever made. It requires a bit more time in editing, but the overall footage, low-light performance, and cinematic video quality are the best, irrespective of the complex workflow. If you can handle it, this is the best.
  • Insta360 X5 — Best for vloggers and content creators who do not want to spend much time in editing and love to have simple, easy-to-set-up 360 video for day-to-day travel coverage. Best for easy editing and a simple workflow.

DJI Osmo Nano - Price, Release Date, Features, and Everything You Need to Know

DJI osmo nano

DJI Osmo Nano will surely redefine point-and-shoot photography with an innovative modular design and high-quality video recording. The design Osmo Nano is DJI’s smallest action camera till date, as you can very clearly see in the images that we have published of the Osmo Nano. It looks very small and somewhat similar to the Insta360 Go 3S, which weighs only 39 grams. This camera has been specifically designed and developed for content creators who love to have a tiny camera for high-quality point-of-view shots.

What is the DJI Osmo Nano?

DJI Osmo Nano is DJI’s smallest action camera yet. Its design specifically resembles the Insta360 Go 3, so it’s more accurate to say it’s a competitor of the Insta360 Go 3 rather than a successor to the DJI Action 2 camera. DJI Osmo Nano is purely focused on portability, versatility, and lightweight design. The design is ideal for vloggers, athletes, and FPV drone pilots who need a lightweight camera for hands-free point-of-view recording. The Osmo Nano has a modular magnetic design — it can easily fit on your clothes without the necessity of any external clip, and it has built-in new-gen tech for high-quality 4K video and smooth AI stabilisation.

DJI Osmo Nano 2025 release date – When you can get it

Based on the recent leaks we have and the latest rumours, along with the FCC filing date, the DJI Osmo Nano will arrive in late  September 2025..

Why the delay?

Initial reports hinted that the camera was coming in the month of July 2025, but due to supply chain challenges and final refinement issues, the camera announcement reportedly has been pushed to late summer or early autumn. Such a potential delay is happening only to refine or upscale the existing technology of the Osmo Nano, to meet DJI’s high standards for quality and performance.

DJI Osmo Nano price – How much will it cost

Model Europe (EUR) USA (USD)
DJI Osmo Nano 64GB €369 $399 (B&H Store)
DJI Osmo Nano 128GB €399 $429 (B&H Store)

What affects the price?

DJI is trying to upscale the overall quality of the Osmo Nano camera by including a 1-inch sensor, AI-driven image stabilization, and seamless integration in DJI’s own ecosystem that includes drones and automatic pairing with the DJI Mic 3. So, if all this happens, we may have an elevated price range towards the higher end..

The DJI Osmo Nano 2025 edition is packed with cutting-edge technology. The features will surely impress new-age content creators for seamless integration in their workflow.

  • Modular design – The Osmo Nano features a dual-component system. Initial hints suggest people will also have an external display unit with the camera. The camera unit can be easily attached with the magnetic mount to give you a complete and perfect hands-free point of view experience during workouts, travel, or even extreme sports.

  • Durable and stylish design – It has a foldable brushed metal finish. Osmo Nano combines durability and premium aesthetics. It is one of the best POV cameras available to date.

How does the DJI Osmo Nano 2025 compare to the competitors?

The DJI Osmo Nano 2025 edition enters a very competitive market. It has to directly compete against the Insta360 Go 3S and the GoPro Hero 11 Black Mini.

  • Insta360 Go 3S – The Insta360 Go 3S is very famous for its weight of only 39 grams as well as magnetic mounting for easy POV shooting anywhere. The Osmo Nano’s potential larger sensor, as well as DJI ecosystem integration, will surely give it a good edge in image and video quality as well as versatility compared to the Insta360 Go 3S.
  • GoPro Hero 11 Black Mini – A compact powerhouse, the GoPro offers excellent durability due to its nature of construction as well as high frame rates. It will be very interesting to see how the Nano competes against the existing Hero 11 Black Mini offerings.
  • DJI Osmo 360 – The Osmo 360 was announced back on July 31, 2025, and it offers 360-degree capture with a large 1-inch sensor. Comparing directly with the Nano will not be very logical, but if you like to have a 360 camera, the Osmo 360 is the best. If you want a POV camera, then obviously the Osmo Nano is made for you.

Why choose the DJI Osmo Nano in 2025?

The DJI Nano is highly recommended and ideal for –

  • Content creators – Adding POV video clips to your content is going to redefine the content you create in a very unique way. Users can now explore your own personal perspective of seeing things and doing work, which will highly increase the engagement rate of your channel.
  • Adventure riders – The magnetic design, small body, and easy-to-carry size for extreme sports and travel purposes are the best advantages of the Osmo Nano. The most important part is that it can be easily integrated with the microphone, so you can record whatever you like without the need for any external receiver over your camera.
  • Drone pilots – Using it in your drone flights will give a very clear and unique perspective to the entire situation. If you create content, then this will surely be a very helpful tool in exploring things in a new way.

Pricing and Availability

The Tamron 18-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD is competitively priced:

Why Photographers Love This Lens

The 18-300mm focal range actually eliminates the need for multiple lenses, so this will become your go-to lens for photography. A traditional advantage of this lens is its approximately 450mm equivalent telephoto reach. At the same time, the lens is weather-sealed, features a 5.9-inch minimum focusing distance, and 1:2 macro capability.

Additionally, the VXD motor is one of the best premium autofocus motors Tamron has developed for their professional series of lenses, and it’s included in this lens. Overall, Tamron has done its best to make a super-perfect all-in-one ultrawide to super telephoto zoom lens.

Who Should Buy the Tamron 18-300mm Lens?

This lens is perfect for:

  • Travel Photographers – If you’re a travel photographer who loves having an all-in-one lens and hates switching lenses while on the go, this one is the best for you. It features 16.6x optical zoom with optical image stabilisation, a zoom lock switch, and a weather-sealed body – perfect for travel.
  • Amateur Photographers – This lens is highly suitable for amateur photographers. Once they have this lens and feel the need for more depth or bokeh, they can add prime lenses. But this is one of the best all-rounder lenses for everything from landscapes to sunsets, animal close-ups, and even some portraits.

Optical Performance and Real-World Use, and Reviews

The lens delivers impressive image quality with strong center performance and acceptable corner sharpness, according to the latest reviews. It features a custom-developed BBAR-G2 coating that minimizes ghosting and flare, even in backlit conditions, which generally cause issues in high-zoom lenses like this.

Users report clear and vibrant images at wide angles. While the corner sharpness is not as strong as seen in primes or constant-aperture zooms, the lens does deliver excellent bokeh at longer focal lengths. So, it’s ideal for portraits and wildlife photography. Although it’s not a very fast lens due to the limited aperture range, it is highly usable.

Olympus OMD Medium Format Camera – Latest Rumors

Olympus medium format camera

According to the latest rumors, Olympus, also known as OMDS, is now shaking up the opportunities in the medium format camera market. They are working over the possibility of a new line of medium format cameras from Olympus. How far this rumor is correct, we don’t know, but let’s dive in detail to explore it further.

History Behind the Olympus OM Digital Medium Format Camera

What we know so far about the Olympus medium format digital camera — before we talk about what exactly the source said to the rumor mill — in 2011, Olympus filed a patent for medium format camera that we have covered on our website. The design was quite a bit different from the existing mirrorless bodies of Olympus. It was a box-style design. As you can see in the image below, it is directly coming straight out from the Olympus December 2011 patent, published on our website.

Olympus medium format camera patent image

From the patent image, it is quite clear that Olympus at that time was very much interested in the development of their medium format mirrorless line and that was quite evident from the patent that they filed.

Now, back to August 2025 — take a look at what the source of the rumor mill has said

  • There are engineering samples testing regarding a new line from OMDS.
  • The camera has a large stacked sensor in 4:3 ratio format. It looks like a medium format sensor.
  • It looks like OM picked up the unfinished medium format project in 2018, which was finally canceled by Olympus executives.
  • The EM1X prototype body was originally designed for medium format.
  • My info came from two sources: OMDS and another tech person.
  • The new format is an ongoing project which I was told could be part of OM System product.

Why Medium Format Camera?

Medium format camera is always known for their superior image quality over the full frame or the APS-C bodies, and it’s always a first love of pro photographers, seeking the highest possible image quality in their workflow. An Opportunity for OMDS Olympus,  Major players in the medium format like Sony, Canon, and Nikon are absent from this competition. Fujifilm, Hasselblad, and Phase One are dominating the market right now. So the competition is not as tough as we have in the APS-C or the full frame camera market segment. But what about the market size? Let’s further analyze.

Medium Format Camera – Market Size and Growth Trends

Why does Olympus suddenly seem interested in the medium format cameras? The medium format is a very niche market, and North America appears to have a very clear dominance over the sales — or you may say the market share — of the medium format camera. If you look at the stats:

Medium Format Market Size and Growth Trends

Recent data indicates the global medium format camera market reached USD 163.3 million in 2024, with projections estimating growth to USD 210.5 million by 2033, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.72% from 2025 to 2033, as per IMARC Group.

M4/3 Camera market is shrinking and has reached to lowest point now

We did research related to the size of M4/3 Mirrorless camera, the stats are very limited to Japan only take a look what our editors were able to find

The Micro Four Thirds (M4/3) camera market is shrinking, particularly in Japan, with a significant drop in market share from 21.7% in 2020 to less than 5% in 2023.

Statistical Data of M4/3 camera market share in Japan

Year Market Share in Japan
2019 19.8%
2020 21.7%
2023 < 5%

What We Know So Far About the Olympus Medium Format Camera

  • Overall the M4/3 format camera market share has reached to lowest point. To evolve and survive company has to explore new sensor bodies and formats to appeal to a larger consumer base.
  • Olympus started working on the medium format camera system and development back in 2018.
  • They have published a patent related to the medium format camera on 2011 that we have also covered on our website.
  • The plan was halted — maybe due to the financial condition of the company or the transition of ownership.
  • According to the source, the Olympus OM-1X body was initially designed to house a medium-format camera sensor.
  • The source also suggests the project is still in an exploratory phase, so no confirmation over the arrival of a final product hinted by the source at the moment.

We have also analyzed the market space and growth opportunity of medium format mirrorless cameras. Since the competition is less and the growth is very much clearly visible, if Olympus enters into the competition, it will be a great benefit for Olympus.

Medium Format and Olympus OMD Ecosystem

Yes, they have to work on lenses, since they are completely dedicated right now on Micro Four Thirds (M4/3) format-based interchangeable mirrorless cameras and lenses. And it will be a major step for the company itself to support such a plan.

As we have already seen in the statistics, the medium format market is a niche but growing. The brands like Fujifilm are gaining slower attention from the professionals, but the growth is very clearly visible in this various space. If Olympus enters with a proper set of lenses — either of their own or with the help of third-party manufacturers having the compatibility with their system camera — they can create a very good consumer base, since they are already a known and reputable brand from the DSLR to mirrorless.

As smartphone hardware is posing sensor size up to 1 inch, it has become necessary for Micro Four Thirds camera makers to enter into a new zone that should offer a very unique solution to professional photographers or videographers. Fuji already did that – they have entered directly from APS-C to Medium format. Due to the Shrinking M4/3 market, Panasonic is now updating its M4/3 format Lumix series at a much lower frequency and they’re putting all their attention on the recent S1 series with full-frame sensors based cameras.
It’s a very welcome step if Olympus is entering a medium format space that has lower competition and a good growth opportunity.
