Canon Mirrorless Camera Sales below expectations

fiscal year sales graph 2018

It’s look like Canon isn’t so happy with their market share right now. Although they have very limited Fullframe Mirrorless camera models in market. Take a look what Canon thinks about their market share

An executive of a parts manufacturer that supplies Canon’s mirrorless camera parts said, “I thought that sales would increase with the introduction of full-size mirrorless, but it was at a level that did not reach the initial plan at all. “We have no choice but to change the management plan.”

We do believe that Canon should speed up the development and announcement of their Mirrorless camera and lenses.  Back on September  Nikon publicly said that they are speeding up the development and announcement of Mirrorless camera, so for sure next year we will see a major expansion in Nikon Mirrorless cameras range. Canon should do the same, they have joined the mirrorless world bit late, so they have to work hard to gain mirrorless market share.

Best of both world

Why not even a single camera maker step out of box and adopt adnroid OS for their camera and spend some time and money in R&D of AI based customized camera apps for their system cameras.

If any camera maker combine the goodness of large camera sensor and AI based camera modes + image decoding algorithms as we have in smartphones, then for sure we will have best tool in our hands.

Zeiss ZX1 is a excellent attempt to create smartcameras

We all know Zeiss ZX1 is a smartcamera which uses android OS and customized camera app. But it cost too high and not in the reach of day to day shooters. We need a new series of smartcameras that can uplift the performance of existing cameras.

What will happen in next Five years ?

Do you have any idea what will happen in next five years if smartphone makers improves their AI to next level and introduce more complex and high quality camera modules behind smartphones ?

CAPTURE THE BEAUTY OF THE NIGHT SKY WITH CANON’S FIRST FULL-FRAME MIRRORLESS CAMERA FOR ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY

Introducing the EOS Ra Camera with Specialized Filtration that Delivers Four Times Greater Hydrogen-alpha Wavelength (656.3 nm) Transmittance Compared to the EOS R

MELVILLE, N.Y., November 5, 2019 — In the words of poet Quintus Ennius, “No one regards what is before his or her feet; we all gaze at the stars.” Helping to gaze and capture the beauty of the stars and beyond, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the company’s first full-frame mirrorless camera for astrophotography, the EOS Ra. This new camera was built off the EOS R system combining new features, such as four times greater transmittance of hydrogen-alpha (Hα) light of 656.3 nm compared to the original EOS R. For astrophotographers and hobbyists who enjoy capturing the detailed splendor of the night sky, the new EOS Ra will be an ideal camera to shoot with.

“Since the introduction of the EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera system last fall, Canon has remained committed to launching a line of impressive and innovative EOS R models and a strong variety of RF lenses and accessories to meet the needs of every skill level of photographer,” said Kazuto Ogawa, president and chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “As a group of photographers who are passionate about capturing what we can’t see with our naked eyes, the new EOS Ra is designed for astrophotographers looking to capture vivid imagery of the night sky.”

Targeting the needs of astrophotographers, the new EOS Ra full-frame mirrorless camera incorporates many advanced features of the EOS R, such as RF mount design, a 30.3MP CMOS sensor, high-precision electronic viewfinder, high-sensitivity, low-noise performance and 4K time-lapse shooting. Optional accessories include an AC adapter kit, which allows the camera to be powered through an AC wall outlet or a battery-powered inverter, a BG-E22 battery grip and three EF-EOS R mount adapters to accommodate the entire range of over seventy EF & EF-S lenses.

Other features include:

  • Enhanced transmission of Hα rays (656.3 nm wavelength) through an infrared cutoff filter, helping to capture high-precision images of the deep-red wavelengths emitted by nebulae in vivid color, without any special camera alterations.
  • A 30x maximum magnification, allowing users to make extremely precise manual focus adjustments*.
  • Support for all Canon RF, EF and EF-S lenses (with the use of an optional EF-EOS R mount adapter), including more than 70 lenses from the EF series as well as RF series lenses, which deliver superb image quality. The variety of lenses, such as the large-diameter f/1.2 lenses, ultra-wide-angle lenses, and super-telephoto EF lenses, among others, are all well suited to help photographers to choose the best match for their specific astrophotography purposes.

Availability and Pricing

The Canon EOS Ra full-frame mirrorless camera is scheduled to be available in mid-December 2019 for an estimated retail price of $2,499.00 for the body only**.

A bit more about Canon EOS Ra, and Major Specifications

Finally we have the major specs of the Canon EOS Ra camera. Let’s take a look at the major specs of the camera. It features almost same core specs as we have seen in Canon EOS R camera.

Canon EOS Ra Major Specification [Rumor]

  • 30.3MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor
  • Infrared Sensitivity–Astrophotography
  • DIGIC 8 Image Processor
  • 4K30, 24 Video
  • C-Log & 10-Bit HDMI Out
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF
  • 3.69m-Dot OLED Electronic Viewfinder
  • 3.15″ 2.1m-Dot Swivel Touchscreen LCD
  • Expanded ISO 50-102400
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, SD UHS-II Card Slot
  • Multi-Function Bar, Dual Pixel RAW

Modified infrared filter and a low-noise sensor with heightened hydrogen-alpha sensitivity. These modifications allow the camera to capture magnificent photographs of “red hydrogen emission” nebulae and other cosmic phenomena.

The major difference between the EOS R and EOS Ra is the modified IR cut filter. Canon has altered the filter to provide the Canon EOSRa with greater infrared light sensitivity and enabled it to achieve hydrogen-alpha light transparency. Hydrogen-alpha, also referred to as H-alpha or Hα, is a very specific red visible spectral line created by hydrogen, with a wavelength of 656.28nm. This red visible line in the spectrum occurs when hydrogen electrons fluctuate between the second and third-tiered orbits (or energy levels) of a hydrogen atom (according to the Balmer Series). When they move between these levels they absorb or release energy, and this emission and absorption of energy occurs at 656nm.

The IR cut filter modification of the Canon EOS Ra helps to allow as much light as possible to pass through this narrow bandwidth at the H-alpha frequency. The modification essentially allows you to photograph reddish, diffuse nebulae and other astronomical phenomena in a clearer, more brilliant manner—void of the IR attenuation associated with traditional hot mirrors and other IR-blocking technologies on most cameras. The need to photograph light at this wavelength is paramount because the color of light emitted from nebulae is strongest, and most pure at the hydrogen-alpha line. The color of this light is outside the parameters of the visible spectrum, and our eyes, or camera, cannot accurately render this light without filtration.

World First FF Mirrorless Camera Dedicated for Astrophotography

We have no FF Mirrorless camera dedicated for Astrophotography. In Nikon we have the D850(A) FF DSLR dedicated for astro work. So. literally Canon will soon become world first and only camera maker to have FF Mirrorless camera for astrophotography. Sony A7R IV and A7R III mirrorless camera know as star eaters, Hope Sony and Nikon will also join the astro race soon with capable cameras.

Canon to use Fan Cooling for Camera

Why camera makers are investing time and money in R&D of fan based cooling system in camera. Even if the Fan cooling unit used for external body cooling purpose only, then also there is great chance that air rotation for prolonged period of time in camera body may attract unwanted dust particles to camera body & lens unit if we are shooting in streets. And just in case if we are shooting in humid or rainy season what will going to happen then ?

Patent Images

The cooling vent looks like optional module and it can be added when it required.

Take a look at the text from patent

Conventionally, even in a digital camera, heat generation in an image sensor and an image processing circuit has become a problem due to an increase in pixels of the image sensor and a high frame rate of a moving image. In addition, the camera itself is required to be miniaturized, and there are few parts that release heat. For this reason, there is a limit to heat countermeasures by using heat transfer members that have been conventionally used to diffuse heat to the respective members and making them uniform.
For this reason, forced air cooling using a fan or the like has been proposed, but if it is built in, the image pickup apparatus itself may become large.

Why not Liquid Cooling as we have in Smartphones

Some Smartphones makers are now using liquid cooling tech to combat heat generated by the processor,  when phone is being used actively for hours. Chines smartphone maker Xiaomi uses liquid cooling tech in Poco F1 and in Black shark model. Korea based Smartphone maker Samsung also uses liquid cooling tech in Galaxy S7 and other flagship models to prevent overheating. Samsung developed a method of water cooling that uses a copper thermal heat pipe to disperse heat away from the CPU, especially as the chip works harder.

Well they are also working on Heat Sink Units

We have published this patent on December 17th, 2017, in this patent we can clearly see that Canon engineers were working on a Canon 5D series future body (may be Canon 5D Mark V) to combat camera heat.
