Canon Working on Hybrid Viewfinder for EOS Cinema Camera

Recent Patent suggest that Canon is planning to introduce Mirrors inside the Canon EOS Cinema Series so, they can also add a optical viewfinder wrapped over the EVF. So, you can get both view at a time, larger mirrored OVF view as well as EVF view.

What is Canon actually trying to do, they want to give you more display area by adding a extra layer of optical viewfinder wrapped around corners of EVF. From Mirrorless to SLT – EOS Lineup Journey

Canon latest patent suggest that they are working on a hybrid optical viewfinder for the Canon EOS cinema lineup. The Canon EOS cinema lineup is mirrorless, that is they don’t have mirror inside as of DSLR cameras. By the way despite of having no mirror inside their system the flange distance remains same (Canon EOS Cinema EF Mount Version ) so they can easily adapt the Canon EF Mount lenses without altering the focal length or loosing any feature.

By adding a Fixed Mirror for sure the EOS Cinema lineup will lose their Mirrorless status for sure. And eventually they will going to become a SLT camera with fixed Mirror inside.

Flange distance isn’t a issue , since they are designed to use EF Mount / DSLR lenses.

SLT system type mirror – fixed and non movable

Yes the mirror Canon will going to introduce is not a movable one as we have seen in the DSLR. The mirror inside a cinema EOS lineup will always going to remain fixed at a certain point, So the user can get uninterrupted view of what they are recording.

Image / Video Quality will remain unaffacted, Since the fixed Mirror isn’t covering up the sensor. So literally we will not going to see any change in the Video quality of the camera.

The Canon EOS in my lineup doesn’t actually need a hybrid viewfinder

But why Canon is trying to add a mirror inside the cinema EOS series. well I have seen professional cinematographers those who never look through the viewfinder while creating a movie or short film, they always prefer external display in their work.

Canon 120 Sensor Based Prototype First Samples

Canon showcased 120MP sensors based Prototype. It’s just a prototype so we can’t expect 100% performance from it. But yes, it’s a full functional model and Canon published samples images captured from the prototype.

Now we have to remember that the sensor used inside is a APS-H sensor. The size of the sensors fall between Fullframe and APS-C. Despite of bit smaller sensor size than fullframe the camera 120MP based camera produces RAW image files of weigh 2010MB.

On August 30th, 2010, 8 years from now, In a press release from Tokyo Japan Canon confirmed us that successfully developed 120 MP sensor. In the press release Canon said that

TOKYO, August 24, 2010—Canon Inc. announced today that it has successfully developed an APS-H-size*1 CMOS image sensor that delivers an image resolution of approximately 120 megapixels (13,280 x 9,184 pixels), the world’s highest level*2 of resolution for its size.

The code name of the sensor is the sensor is 120MXS, and it has an ultra-high-resolution of 13280×9184, which is about 60times more than of Full HD resolution.

AT the moment we don’t know when 120MP based camera is coming. But for sure it’s a great achievement for Canon.

Canon New L Series Lens Coming and Delay in 5DS Mark II Announcement ?

Finally, we have a word from reputed rumor mill and if everything goes on schedule we will sure see CANON EF 70-200MM F/4L IS II IS series lens on Month of April 2018. Not only Canon EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM is also rumored to arrive this year, but recent rumors suggest that the announcement of Mirrorless lens may happen during the Photokina event of 2018.

Canon 5DS Update is Overdue, but no DSLR in announcement pipeline

Canon 5DS has become obsolete and canon should announce the 5DS Mark II asap . But, after entry level DSLRs announcement no more new DSLRs are being listed on wireless certification agencies, it’s a bad news for 5DS users those who are expecting 5DS Mark II in 2018 . Even, when canon register a product, the company takes at least 3 to 4 months of time to announce it officially. So, current situation suggest us that, we will not going to see any DSLR from canon before September of 2018.

PC 2352 – More Canon Mirrorless Announcement Soon ?

Yes it is, Canon registered Camera PC 2352 with wireless module WM600, in general Canon uses the PCxxxx series for its Mirrorless cameras and Pro series compacts. This year Canon is more serious about its mirrorless products so we may see a new Mid-range / high-end Mirrorless in next few months and Finally a FF Mirrorless in Sep 2018.
