Regarding your story on Sony lenses getting a refresh, this raises many questions. I’ve added the original announcement dates for these six lenses, according to Digital Photography Review.

From you story, Sony lenses getting a refresh:
    Sony FE 16-35 f/2.8 GM. (Announced May 17, 2017)
    Sony FE 24-70 f/2.8 GM. (Announced Feb. 3, 2016)
Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS. (Announced Feb. 3, 2016)
    Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM. (Announced Feb. 3, 2016)
Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS. (Announced Feb. 7, 2017)
Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS (Announced April 19, 2017)

Seriously, half of these lenses are less than TWO years old, the other half are just THREE years old.

More importantly, these lenses are without exception the best in their respective class. As a certified gearhead, I’m all for progress, innovation, improvements, better designs, but there’s not a dog in this pack!

Why would Sony need a refresh, beyond firmware/software?

I realize these are rumors (or are they?) but this will not help Sony in that:

People who own some/all of these lenses — I own most and love them — are going to think twice before they invest in an expensive lens if it will be replaced in a few years with something newer/better (although for these lenses, this is hard to imagine); and
While these are important lenses for almost anyone’s kit, and Sony has done a fabulous job getting a full range of lenses out in a very fast timeframe, there are other lenses that might fill out the kit/range better than refreshing near-flawless lenses.

    Why, Sony?

    @Herman

You have said right, lenses lifecycle are fairly larger than cameras.

Possibly the source may be talking about some sort of firmware update for recently announced lenses.

Will update you soon as we have any more information

    I think about this also.
The lenese just announce not over 3 years.
It makes me reluctant to buy new one.

I wish Sony would come with a faster alternative of the Zeiss Batis 40mm f2. So a 40mm f1.4. It’s a wonderful focal length.
And otherwise an update of the 35 f1.4. I really don’t understand why for instance the 16-35 2.8 should be updated. That 35 though is known for it’s problems.

  • Eli

I got 16-35gm less than a year ago and it would be stupid for Sony to update this lens.I heard they are going to release a firmware, maybe that is the case.

  • Simon

Seriously Sony, could we have another firmware update for FE 24-70mm f4 to render it “credit worthiness” again. All the bad publications and reviews have resulted in this lens being ignore almost totally !! Prior updates had no seem much improvement. Please reconsider this as we are the pioneer users who put our faith in your untested new mirrorless system those days.

Man I’ve been waiting for a good 21mm from Sony. 1.4-2.8 in the f stop range. There are only manual focus lenses in this category, something autofocus would be nice.

21mm is perfect for architectural/construction. Just under 90 degree viewing angle, and just under the point at which lines begin to converge due to wide angle.

Its also about the preferred focal length for my current 16-35 2.8. (really a range between 18 or 19 to about 23)

I would much prefer more lens releases than full lens refreshes. they’re getting close to a full range of lenses but I would prefer to see more filling out rather than lens refreshes. Unless there are known problems or slow enough performance to such a degree to warrant a refresh.

    Lenses I own (16-35 2.8, 70-200 2.8+adapters, 28-70 kit lens)
    Lenses I’m interested in (90 2.8 macro, 50 1.4)
Lenses I dream about (400 2.8) Early morning bird photography!
