A new patent surfaced over the web that shows Nikon is working on Phase Detect Autofocus Sensor. However we have published several patent in past that shows Nikon is actively working to bring Phase AF sensor inside DSLRs and Mirrorless.
Patent Details
Japanese Unexamined Patent
Application Publication No. 2017-216578 (P2017-216578A)
[Publication date] December 7, Heisei 20 (2017.12.7)
Patent application title: Imaging device and electronic camera
The patent isn’t new and we have also published Nikon AF adapter for Mirrorless cameras and also a New Hybrid sensor, take a look.
Also see one more Hybrid AF sensor patent Published on Aug 2018.
Also see Nikon working on Multilayer Hybrid AF sensor patent.
I personally do believe that Nikon will bring Hybrid AF sensor to its DSLR very soon. Can you guess the name of Nikon upcoming model that will carry a Hybrid AF sensor inside it. Do share your thoughts in the comment box below

Nikon done a bit complex patent, in the image above you can see that Nikon is working on compact Mirrorless system with Hybrid sensor. The figure shows the camera adopt a Hybrid AF adapter built in Pellicle (Transparent) Mirror and a dedicate phase AF module. With the use of Hybrid AF adapter Mirrorless system camera will get converted into DSLR system.
The AF adapter will compensate the flange distance and will allow you to use traditional DSLR lenses in your APS-C or FF Mirrorless camera.
Nikon Hybrid Sensor for Mirrorless Camera

The image taken from Nikon patent document that shows a Hybrid PDAF sensor. We do expect that the upcoming cameras (including DSLRs and Mirrorless) will feature Hybrid sensor for enhanced AF support.

[invention [ Image pickup device] [Focusing detection sensor PDAF sensor] [Intermediate adapter Mount adapter] Although the intermediate adapter of the application is similar to Sony’s LA-EA 4, it seems to detect the phase by the area image instead of the line sensor. This mount adapter looks like Sony’s LA-EA 4, but with PDAF area, not line, image sensor.

A wired lens patent from Nikon surfaced over the web, we are saying wired since the lens us made for curve sensor. And if you look at the patent image the camera doesn’t have any mirror inside. So, the patent clearly shows us future Nikon Mirrorless camera with a curve sensor.
The patent doesn’t specify that camera is a Compact camera or a Mirrorless camera. Few weeks ago we have told you that Nikon is working on High-End Mirrorless camera and just after that Nikon also officially confirmed the same. It is also possible that Nikon may be working on a Sony RX1 series competitor ? since the lens attached with the camera is a 35mm F2 fixed lens.
Earlier we have received information that Nikon will going to expand the Nikon 1 series camera.

Before we begin I must admit it it’s very hard to understand a patent literature, but after analyzing the entire document we concluded that Nikon working on a BSI CMOS AF Sensor. The sensor won’t have dead Phase AF pixels as the other Hybrid sensor have, instead of that it working principle looks same as Canon’s Dual-pixel CMOS AF sensor.
Nikon Dual Pixel AF Sensor ?
Till now only Canon was only company who was using dual pixel CMOS AF Technology. But when we have seen the new Nikon latest patent where two sub pixels involved in acquiring AF, that clearly indicates Canon isn’t alone and Nikon will soon bring a new class of Hybrid Sensors for it’s DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras in near future.
Patent Details:
BACKSIDE ILLUMINATION IMAGE
SENSOR AND IMAGE-CAPTURING DEVICE
Applicant: NIKON CORPORATION, Tokyo (JP)
Appl. No.: 15/260,994
Filed Date: Sep. 9, 2016
Pub. Date: Dec. 29, 2016
But now after looking at the patent we have got its look like Nikon is also interested in working on the same dual pixel CMOS sensor Technology.
Details from the patent document
A backside illumination image sensor that includes a semiconductor substrate with a plurality of photoelectric conversion elements and a read circuit formed on a front surface side of the semiconductor substrate, and captures an image by outputting, via the read circuit, electrical signals generated as incident light having reached a back surface side of the semiconductor substrate is received at the photoelectric conversion elements includes: a light shielding film formed on a side where incident light enters the photoelectric conversion elements, with an opening formed therein in correspondence to each photoelectric conversion element; and an on-chip lens formed at a position set apart from the light shielding film by a predetermined distance in correspondence to each photoelectric conversion element. The light shielding film and an exit pupil plane of the image forming optical system achieve a conjugate relation to each other with regard to the on-chip lens.
Details from the patent document clearly indicates that Nikon is working on a BSI CMOS sensor that will have two sub pixels that will do AF by calculating the amount of lens drive Between the two autofocus point.
The image above of the patent you will get a clear indication that Nikon will do the same as Canon has done in many of its full frame and aps-c DPAF sensor camera. we are the first website to show you the details of the patent till now it is also possible that even Canon doesn’t know about this technology that Nikon working on.

Yes it;s true that Nikon is working on 1 inch sensor camera with 81X optical zoom. Till now only Nikon is the camera maker to offer compact camera Nikon P900 with 83X optical zoom. But as we all know that Nikon P900 uses 1/2.3″ CMOS sensor and it doesn’t qualify the Gear list of most of professional shooters.
If Nikon announces such product in near future with Latest 1 inch sensor and 81X optical zoom will sure create a Bang on market.

Nikon and Canon do quality inspection before the shipment of lens starts, but if Lens fails in quality standards test then lenses are first de-assembled and re-assembling takes a lot of cost as well as time.
The Nikon latest patent tells us the lens elements can by adjusted even after assembling is done. It’s actually a technological breakthrough and will uplift the overall quality of Nikon Lenses.
