Let’s begin with the Canon R8. The R8 is a full-frame camera, and the major advantages we have with this camera are superior low-light performance as well as better dynamic range. Since we have a full-frame sensor, the background blur or the depth in the images will be greater when using the same aperture-based lenses.

In the Sony A6700 camera, the major advantage we have is a compact, ultralight body with a huge range of E-mount lenses, as well as Sony’s advanced AI autofocus and sensor-shift stabilization system.

For portrait and wedding photography, we highly recommend the Canon R8. The full-frame sensor produces excellent background blur, and at the same time, Canon sensors are known for producing high-quality skin tones. So, if you are into wedding or portrait photography, where you frequently work with skin tones, it is highly recommended to use a Canon camera.

Additionally, the Canon R8 has superior low-light performance. Despite not having an FSI sensor, this particular camera’s low-light performance is phenomenal, as the sensor comes directly from the Canon EOS R6 Mark II. Overall, this particular camera offers a professional-grade body at a reasonable price.

The Sony A6700, on the other hand, has an APS-C sensor, resulting in a smaller depth of field and less background blur compared to a full-frame sensor. That’s why we do not directly recommend it over the Canon R8 when working on portrait sessions or weddings.

Lens Recommendations for Portrait & Wedding Photography

One important thing to note is that the Canon R8 does not have sensor-shift image stabilization, so it becomes highly essential to use optically stabilized lenses.

  • For weddings and events, we recommend the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM.
  • For portrait photography, the Canon RF 85mm f/1.8 STM is a great choice.

Landscape & Travel Photography

For landscape and travel photography, where dynamic range, portability, and battery life matter the most:

When it comes to travel or landscape photography, most of the shooting will be done handheld. Specifically, when traveling or capturing landscapes, you need sensor-shift image stabilization (IBIS) inside your camera body to ensure sharp images.

Verdict: Sony A6700 is More Recommended for Landscape and Travel Photography.


Wildlife & Sports Photography

For wildlife and sports photography, where autofocus speed, continuous shooting, and telephoto reach are crucial:

If we compare the continuous shooting speed of both cameras:

  • Canon R8 is capable of capturing 40 frames per second in JPG mode and up to 30 frames per second in RAW mode, which is far superior to the Sony A6700, which is limited to 11 frames per second.
  • For action photography, capturing fast-moving subjects like birds or animals, the Canon R8 has a clear advantage in burst shooting speed.

Another associated advantage of a full-frame sensor is its low-light performance and dynamic range. When you are shooting wildlife or animals, they are often found in uncontrolled lighting conditions. Having a full-frame sensor allows you to extract more details and recover highlights in post-processing.

However, despite all these advantages of the Canon R8, for sports and wildlife photography, we highly recommend the Sony A6700, and here’s why:

  1. Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization (IBIS)
    • The Sony A6700 has IBIS, which is a huge advantage for wildlife and sports photographers.
    • If you are using lenses like the Sony 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS, the sensor-shift IBIS will pair with the lens’s optical stabilization, allowing for stable handheld shots of moving subjects.
    • While a tripod or monopod is always recommended, IBIS helps tremendously in handheld shooting.
  2. APS-C Crop Factor for Extra Telephoto Reach
    • The 1.5x crop factor of the APS-C sensor gives more reach with telephoto lenses.
    • Even with a 200-600mm lens, the effective focal length increases, providing exceptional close-up shots of birds and animals.
    • With a full-frame sensor, you are limited to native telephoto lenses, which are significantly more expensive.
    • If you use a full-frame camera in crop mode, the resolution drops significantly (Canon R8 in APS-C mode drops to ~10MP). In contrast, the Sony A6700 maintains its full 26MP resolution.

Nikon P1100 or P2000: Breaking Down Rumored P1000 Successor

Recent reports suggest the demand for the Nikon P1000 camera has gained huge momentum. The camera is now selling for more than its recommended MSRP retail price range (approximately 2X price), and this is very clearly visible in online stores all around the world.

The demand for compact cameras has returned to the market, and most influencers right now are willing to buy a high-quality compact camera. However, the supply of compact cameras is very low, and at the same time, there is only one super high-zoom camera available: the Nikon P1000.

As we have already said, the recent report shows that the price of the P1000 is skyrocketing globally. Now let’s dive into the details and explore the possibilities, starting with the name of the camera.


Nikon P1100 or P2000: What’s Next from Nikon?

  • 150x high-quality optical zoom lens, with digital zoom up to 200x. – As per the initial rumors, the camera is set to have a 3500mm zoom lens. Earlier, the P1000 model had a 3000mm zoom lens, which was equivalent to 125x optical zoom.
  • The new lens will have an aperture of f/2.8 ultra-wide aperture, which will improve the overall low-light performance of the camera and will also help ensure more artistic depth of field in the shots.
  • The NEW 1/1.8-inch CMOS sensor (larger than the P1000’s 1/2.3-inch sensor) aims to boost dynamic range, reduce noise, and enhance image quality
  • New AI Auotofous: Similar to what we have seen in Nikon Z50 II, Z6 III, Z8, and Z9.
  • 4k 60FPS Video and continuous,  refined autofocus and color grading tools for enhanced video production

Nikon P2000 camera can easily dominate the bridge camera market with its unmatched zoom and new AI modes. The best thing is that literally no competitor is present in the bridge camera market to compete against the Nikon P2000 camera.

The camera is targeted towards bird lovers, travel photographers, and even professionals who want to have a secondary body and an alternative to heavy and bulky DSLR setups. The first photo of DJI‘s new Action 6 sports camera has been leaked, and it is expected to be released sometime in 2025. The specific release date is expected to be between March and June of 2025.

As we have discussed earlier, Sony is releasing two new lenses and two new cameras. Let’s first discuss these two lenses. Then, we will discuss the cameras we have already discussed in the previous post.

Sony FE 16mm F1.8
The first is the vlogging-friendly 16 mm f/1.8 lens. This particular lens is a budget f/1.8 lens developed for full-frame sensor-based cameras. We already weigh the VILTROX 16 mm f/1.8 lens. That being said, the upcoming Sony lens is more compact and looks very similar to their APS-C line of compact lenses, like maybe the 11 mm f/1.8. The next thing Sony is working on is a budget telephoto zoom lens for wildlife and landscape photographers.

We already have Sony’s 200–600 mm lens, and this will be an extended edition in the same series, where you can reach from 400 to 800 mm. This new lens will undoubtedly become more popular over time due to its reach. Wildlife photographers and bird shooters love to have a lens beyond 600 mm to capture details more closely, and if a lens option like 400–800 mm is available, anyone would surely pick this lens instead of getting a 200–600 mm.

Canon has unveiled 24K Resolution sensor

Canon has introduced a new full-frame sensor with a 410-megapixel resolution, a milestone that no one has achieved in the realm of full-frame sensors to date. Canon is the first to break this resolution record by creating a 410-megapixel full-frame sensor. This sensor is capable of recording 24K video, a feat never before possible with any camera. At the same time, the sensor’s readout speed is currently limited, so prototypes can only capture video at 6 frames per second. Nonetheless, with advancements in the camera industry and the adoption of faster semiconductors, it’s only a matter of time before this performance improves.

 

Canon develops CMOS sensor with 410 megapixels, the largest number of pixels ever achieved in a 35 mm full-frame sensor

TOKYO, January 22, 2025— Canon Inc. announced today that it has developed a CMOS sensor with 410 megapixels (24,592 x 16,704 pixels), which is the largest number1 of pixels ever achieved in a 35 mm full-frame sensor. This sensor is expected to be used in applications that demand extreme resolution in various markets including surveillance, medicine, and industry.

The newly developed CMOS sensor features a resolution equivalent to 24K (198 times greater than Full HD, and 12 times greater than 8K). This enables users to crop any part of the image captured by this sensor and enlarge it significantly while maintaining high resolution. While many CMOS sensors with a super-high pixel count are medium-format or larger, this extreme resolution sensor is compacted into a 35 mm full-frame format. This allows it to be used in combination with lenses for full-frame sensors, and it is expected to contribute to the miniaturization of shooting equipment. As data readout of a CMOS sensor tends to take longer as the number of pixels increases, achieving a CMOS sensor with a super-high pixel count requires advanced signal processing technology. The newly developed sensor employs a back-illuminated stacked formation in which the pixel segment and signal processing segment are interlayered and also includes a redesigned circuitry pattern. As a result, the sensor is capable of achieving a super-high readout speed of 3,280 megapixels per second, delivering video at 8 frames per second.

This sensor also features a “four-pixel binning” function that virtually treats four adjoining pixels as one, thereby improving sensitivity and making it possible to capture brighter images. When this function is in use, the sensor can capture 100-megapixel video at 24 frames per second.

By leveraging the technology it has accumulated over many years as a leading imaging company, Canon has developed breakthrough products including CMOS sensors with super-high pixel count and ultra-sensitivity, and SPAD sensors, which detect faint traces of light even in dark areas. Canon will continue to advance its technology and contribute to the transformation and further development of society.

The sensor is scheduled to be displayed at the Canon booth at SPIE Photonics West, a leading global conference for optics and photonics held in San Francisco from January 28-30, 2025.
