Nikon Z30 vs Canon SL3 Canon 200D Mark II

We are getting lots of requests for this comparison from our subscribers, we are comparing the major differences between the two. Not only Major we will also include an image quality test. To find out the best camera between the two

We have the Nikon Mirrorless camera against the Canon DSLR, I do agree that Nikon Z30 is a Mirrorless camera but at the same time, the Canon 200D isn’t a traditional DSLR. It’s a Fusion of Mirrorless in a DSLR body.

1. Viewfinder

Design-wise both cameras are slightly different, although both of them have very deep handgrip. If ur photographer au will fell very comfortable with each of them. The main issue with Nikon Z30 is the absence of EVF / OVF. But, if you’re coming from the smartphone generation then you won’t miss the viewfinder of the camera, but if you’re a photographer who is using Viewfinder in their DSLR they may miss it.

2. Auto Focus system

Nikon Z30 AF system now supports continuous burst up to 11 FPS with full-time AF support. As usual Canon 200D, Mark II has a limited 5.5 FPS burst speed when ur using the EVF, and when you switch to a better AF system/sensor based / display is active then Canon 200D Mark II AF speed drops to 3 FPS.

Earlier when the Nikon Z50 camera was announced roughly two years back, the AF system of the Nikon Z50 was weak and slow. But, with constant firmware updates the AF system has been improved to the next level and now we are able also to track human eyes in the video, and animal eye AF is also enabled in firmware 2.0. With the same pre-loaded firmware the Nikon Z30 camera has arrived with the same image sensor and image processor. So, we are expecting an enhanced AF performance this time with the Nikon Z30 camera. And it’s not only on paper, if you look at the AF sensitivity range of the camera it is far better than that of the Canon 200D Mark II DSLR.
AF comparison table

Focus Type Auto and Manual Focus Auto and Manual Focus
Focus Mode Continuous-Servo AF, Manual Focus, Single-Servo AF Automatic, Continuous-Servo AF, Manual Focus, Single-Servo AF
Autofocus Points Photo, Video
Phase Detection: 209
Phase Detection: 9 (1 Cross-Type)
HYbrid AF 209 143 AF Zones / 3975 AF points
Autofocus Sensitivity -4.5 to +19 EV -0.5 to +18 EV

It doesn’t mean if Nikon Z30 is loaded with an enhanced AF algorithm, our Canon 200D Mark II DSLR becomes inferior at any point. The Canon 200D Mark II 143 AF zones (3975 AF points) are really very helpful in tracking the human eye and face. And at the time when the 200D Mark II was announced it was the only DSLR with a 3D AF object tracking mechanism even the Fuji X-T200 doesn’t have that. But, now Nikon Z30 have 3D object tracking mode in the still and video too.

Overall, if we count the AF sensitivity and burst speed of both the camera Nikon Z30 wins clearly.

3. Image Quality

The Nikon Z30 uses the same 20MP sensor and Expeed 6 image processor we have seen in the Nikon Z50 camera, so we have decided to make a high ISO test between the Canon 200D mark II and the Nikon Z30, with a promise once the Z30 samples are available we will update this page too.

Initial High ISO test comparison, we can clearly notice that the Nikon Z50 / Z30 camera is able to preserve more details compared to the Canon 200D Mark II camera. So, we have added one more high ISO test image here @ISO 12800. In both, images it’s very clearly visible that Nikon 20MP sensor’s low-light performance is better than of Canon 24MP sensor used in the Canon 200D Mark II camera.

So, if you are working in an uncontrolled light environment then Nikon Z3 is best for you, otherwise, if you work with light / you work in the studio or always have portable lights with you then Canon 200D Mark II will also perform better.

4. Video Quality

Nikon Z30 camera captures oversampled 4k 24, 30 fps video. Oversampled video means the Nikon Z30 camera is using the entire 20MP sensor each pixel to create Oversampled 6K Video, so the quality we get from the Nikon Z30 video is just phenomenal. The color, contrast output, and shadow details are very good and usable. On the other side, we have a Canon 200D Mark II camera that creates video by sub-sampling / line-skipping method, so the details are not coming through the entire sensor. Although I have used the Canon 200D Mark II as a video camera and the Full HD video quality looks good to me. Also, kindly note that now Nikon Z30 doesn’t have any 30min recording limit.

In the end, I have to mention that in Canon 200D Mark II / SL3 we have to face an excessive crop of 1.6X. So, we already have a 1.6X cropped sensor and over that again we have to face a 1.6X crop. And the worst part is the DPAF gets disabled when you use the 4K video mode of the Canon 200D mark II or SL3 camera. No, such issue i am able to find in the Nikon Z30 camera.

5. Verdict

If you are a photographer and want to get everything within budget, which includes Canon’s super affordable 50mm F1.8 lens, then you should go with SL3. Since the price and availability of lenses is the only factor where the Nikon Z30 fails to impress us. Otherwise, if we talk about sensor performance, Autofocus, or Video recording modes. Nikon Z30 is a clear winner.

Sony ZV-E10 vs Canon 200D Mark II

Let’s compare the Sony ZV-E10 camera with Canon 200D Mark II SL3. As we all know Canon SL3 or 200D Mark III is one of the most popular Canon vlogger-friendly cameras, but with a slightly high price is Sony ZV-E10 is better or not? let’s find out in the specification comparison review.

High ISO Test

At ISO 3200 Visible loss of details starts from Canon Sensor. At the same time, Sony was able to somehow maintain the details even at 3200 ISO, but even in that image, we can see some visible color fringing started on the edges of the circle lines.

AT 25600 ISO both images are completely unable but, we can clearly see here Canon 200D II or SL3 sensor not able to maintain details as of the SOny ZV-E10 camera.

So, to make the test more clear to our users we have selected RAW format at ISO 25600. You can clearly see the level of color noise is higher on Canon sensor and slightly well maintained on Sony Sensor.

Better Metering and Faster Shooting Speed in Sony

Metering range in low-light is better in Canon compared to the Sony ZV-E10 Camera, as well as you can see we are getting 11FPS of continuous shooting speed with AI/AF tracking. In Canon, the continuous shooting speed is limited to 4.5 FPS.

In Video Mode – Sony ZV-E10 is better

Video Auto Focus – Video Autuofus in Canon 200D Mark II / Sl3 is very good at Full HD mode, in 4k video mode the DPAF support drops and we get CDAF (contrast) based AF support. In Sony, we don’t have to face such an issue, the AF is available all the time despite the shooting mode you have selected either Full HD or 4k.

4k Crop in Canon – In Canon 200D Mark II / SL3 Camera we have to face 1.6x furthermore crop in 4K video mode and as I have also mentioned above the DPAF support also drops. It, clearly means that 4K video mode was built for the specification sheet and not for users.

Sony Rolling shutter problem in Video: While shooting  4K video with a faster shutter speed you might see some jello effect while moving your camera since the sensor is 5 years old and coming out from the A6100/ A6400 camera. So, you have to buy a variable ND filter if you want to shoot Broll in Sunlight.

Sony Dedicated Video mode for Vloggers: Sony introduced several vlogger-friendly shooting modes in their Sony ZV1 camera. The same was also implemented on the Sony ZV-E10 camera. Some of the most usable modes include product showcase mode, Bokeh mode and Face Exposure Priority mode.

Both 3.5mm microphone and headphone ports are also featured for more advanced audio recording, and the Multi Interface Shoe also benefits audio recording capabilities.

Full HD recording at 120p, no 120p mode in Canon.

The directional 3-capsule microphone that is specifically designed for forward-directional audio recording. Also, a dedicated wind screen for the built-in mic is included to help achieve cleaner audio when working outdoors.

Canon 200D II / SL3 vs Canon 200D / SL2

Canon 200D II / SL3 vs Canon 200D / SL2 camera, the camera features more advance AF system, Digital IS and 4K video. So, let’s have a look in a very detailed specification comparison what actually improved inside the camera.

1. Canon 200D II / SL3 vs Canon 200D / SL2 – Sensor and Image Processor

Image Stabilization Digital, 5-Axis (Video Only) None

Everything remains look same from specification side. But the sensor is new with more AF points fabricated on it. However, the tech remains same [CMOS] so don’t expect jump in image quality of the camera.

Digital Image stabilization is being introduced inside the camera. Before Canon 200D II / 250D the Digital IS tech was limited to 6D Mark II and Canon T7i / Canon 800D. Now finally we are having the Digital IS feature in 200D II or SL2. When paired up with OIS [Optical image stabilization] it gives support upto 5 stops.

New Image processor – With the introduction of new image processor the Camera company in general also adds new image decoding algorithm and overall operational speed of the camera also improves.

With the introduction of new image processor the camera now records C-RAW files and 4K cropped video.

No comments on ISO range, continuous shooting speed and Continuous AF speed. Despite of adding a brand new image processor and a newly developed CMOS sensor these features remains same as of predecessor. It’s look like Canon want to protect its upcoming Mid-Range DSLR sales

Canon finally introduced 4K Video recording option inside the Canon 200D II / SL3 / 250D camera. However the option is same as we have seen inside the Canon EOS M50 camera. We do get some forced limitation from Canon in 250D camera.

2.56X Crop in 4K video mode, as well as no DPAF support in 4K mode. The AF remains limited to contrast detect AF.

4. Dual Pixel CMOS AF

AF system is drastically improved, now you will be getting 3975 AF points in the Canon  200D II / 250D / SL3 camera. Literally it’s not possible to select every single AF points from camera menu or display screen so Canon grouped those AF points into 143 AF Zones.

The Canon 200D II DPAF system in best in its class and even better than most of Mid-range DSLRs and Mirrorless of today’s.

Weight 15.84 oz / 449 g (Body with Battery and Memory) 14.32 oz / 406 g (Body Only)

 8. Conclusion

Canon 200D II arrived with limited improvements, the sensor is revised and AF is vastly improved, we have new Digic 8 image processor that improves overall operational speed of the camera and add 4k as well as C-RAW file option to 200D II. But, despite of having a new image processor, we are getting same continuous shooting speed and ISO ratings. And not only that 4K mode mimic the same limitations we have seen inside the EOS M50 camera.

But, above all Canon 200D II high density AF system is best in its class. You will be getting best in class AF speed while recording videos or shooting still through the display / live view mode.

We highly recommend you to buy Canon 200D II camera over Canon 200D.

Empowering Users with an Easy Way to Express Themselves, the New Camera Delivers Stunning Photos and 4K Videos in a Lightweight Body

MELVILLE, N.Y., April 10, 2019 – Combining ease-of-use with high-image quality, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today unveiled the EOS Rebel SL3 DSLR camera, the smallest and lightest product within the current EOS lineup. Weighing just 15.84 oz1, the EOS Rebel SL3 offers users a compact system delivering high-resolution images – complete with an APS-C imaging sensor, DIGIC 8 Image Processor and 3.0-inch vari-angle LCD touchscreen as well as 4K video, a first for the EOS Rebel lineup. Compatible with Canon’s full line of interchangeable EF and EF-S lenses, along with the ability to instantly send images to compatible smartphones through Auto Image Transfer via Wi-Fi® connectivity2, the EOS Rebel SL3 is the tool needed to empower aspiring photographers to capture gorgeous shots quickly and easily.

“Since its inception, the EOS Rebel product line has aimed to provide imaging excellence for entry-level visual storytellers,” said Kazuto Ogawa, president and chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “Therefore, it was imperative that the next step in the EOS Rebel journey include innovative features such as 4K video and DIGIC 8 Image Processor to meet the needs of emerging photographers, while living up to the high-image quality and compact size EOS Rebel DSLRs are known for.”

The EOS Rebel SL3 carries a powerful 24.1 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor, enabling users to snap photos and express themselves across a multitude of settings – whether it be a beautiful night scene, stunning family-vacation destination or a picturesque landscape. The camera is equipped with Canon’s DIGIC 8 processor – first introduced in the EOS M50 and later built into the revolutionary EOS R full-frame mirrorless system.
