As you can look at the image of both the camera, Pentax performance is amazing..
Sony A7R IV camera packs Sony’s 61MP FF BSI CMOS sensor. We have no doubt that Sony A7R IV is industry leading high-resoltuion Mirrorless solution in FF lineup and after that we have Fuji GFX100 MF camera if we want more resolution.
Finally after a long gap we have high ISO test samples available in dpreview studio comparison tool. So, the link is at the end post if you want to play with others cameras. Before that let’s take a look at what ISO rating the noise starts to show off in Sony A7R IV RAW and JPEG file.
Usable ISO Range of Sony A7R IV in JPEG Mode
There are lot of people who grab JPEG files from the camera, Since they have no time to edit RAW photos. Specifically, I am talking about wedding and event shooters those who prefer JPEG most of the time.
Sony A7R IV Max JPEG usable ISO range is ISO 6400. After ISO 6400 we do get significant amount of noise in camera sample and it make it almost unusable for professional use or you need a strong noise reduction filter after ISO 6400 rating if you want to reduce noise.
Sony A7R IV @ RAW Mode
At Raw mode we can notice noise starts to appear after ISO 800 in Sony A7R IV camera.
One of the best low-light comparison video created by our reader and very talented professional Shooter and Vlogger. Sony A7RIII vs A7III vs A7SII vs A7RII – High ISO Test Videos. Out of all these cameras, Sony A7III and A7s II performed very well.
Ok, I have a confession to make. I have all 4 top end Sony A7 series cameras – A7RIII, A7III, A7SII, A7RII (Too much I know…). But for a reason though, to make this comparison video for you guys. At one stage, I had all 4 sony cameras with me. So whilst I still have all of them, I decided to make a low light test comparison between all 4 cameras to share with you guys and see at which ISO all four of them begin to degrade. So you know where and when not to step across that boundaries. The results – might surprised you!

Take a look at the high ISO test between Sony A7R III (Amazon and B&H) and Sony 7R II. Despite of using same sensor and image processor of Sony A7 R3 Is performing bit better compared to its competitor.
Even at MAX ISO 102400, In the image above you can see the A7R III (right) is controlling the color noise more effectively compared to the Sony A7R II camera (left).
Nikon D850 features 47 MP sensor and Expeed 5 image processor. The Nikon D850 is Nikon first DSLR to feature BSI CMOS sensor. The sensor is exclusively designed by Nikon and developed by Sony. The sensor The ISO of the camera can be pushed to ISO 32-102400. The camera features standard ISO range of 64-25600.
Now before we begin to see the High ISO test of the Nikon D850 camera, You must know that Nikon D850 has become the world first FF DSLR camera that scored 100 Marks in DXO lab test. And Canon 5D Mark IV is not in even Top 10 list of camera. But, we have arranged both camera images side by side, what you think is the most important thing. Let’s know in our comment box.
Nikon D850 vs Sony A7R II
The High ISO test between the Nikon and Sony A7R II
Nikon D850 camera controlling color noise more effectively compared to Sony A7R II ? upto some extent yes, But even at ISO 12800 Nikon D850 shows color bleeding issue. (colors are floating out of the box)
Nikon D850 vs Canon 5D Mark IV
Does Nikon D850 showing exceptionally better result compared to 5D Mark IV ? I don’t think so. The Nikon D850 is marginally better in picking up details due to high-res sensor. Just look at the soft edges of the red color box, Nikon D850 samples look bit more soft and melted compared to Canon.
I am really disappointed to see the High ISO test result of Sony A9 camera when compared to Sony A7 R2. We can’t raise questions on the test process since that test is done by the DPreview team.
From the test it is very clear that despite of having 2 years old Technology and 2x more resolution the Sony 7r II ISO performance is almost same as Sony A9 which raises the question on capability of Sony engineers. They have taken 2 years of time and the photo pixels (35.30µm2vs 20.33µm2) of Sony A9 is approx price bigger than the Sony A7 R2. But, despite of that the noise performance of the camera remains same and which is insane.
I was expecting at least 2X better performance than Sony A7RII. But when we I seen the test score then I personally find no reason in picking up Sony A9 camera by paying more price ($2698 vs $4498). Yes, the A9 do have speed but that isn’t necessary to 90% Photographers.
ISO 51,200 comparison of a7R II vs a9. Not much difference, though the a7R II does slightly edge out the a9. Normalized signal:noise ratio (SNR) measurements place the two neck-to-neck: 1.82 vs. 1.48 for the a7R II and a9 at the dark patches here, respectively. At ISO 25,600, the normalized SNR is exactly the same. Please click on image for proper 1:1 comparison source dpreview
Take a look at the HIGH ISO Test between, Pentax K-1 vs Sony A7R II -= The Sony A7R II features 42MP Full-Frame Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor and Pentax K-1 features 36.4MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor.
As we know that the Pentax K-1 also uses Sony Sensor, the 36.4MP Full Frame Exmor CMOS Sensor inside the Pentax K-1 camera is of Sony A7R camera and on the other side we have Sony A7R II camera that uses newly developed 42MP Full-Frame Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor, let’s find-out which one is best.
Pentax K-1 vs Sony A7R II
The from above images samples we can clearly see that both the camera produces excellent image quality, at ISO 3200. We are not able to stop any major difference between them.
