About Sigma Foveon X3 Sensor - Update 2024

The CEO of Sigma Corporation recently stated in an interview regarding the Foveon X3 sensor: “Unfortunately, there has been no significant progress in the development of the Foveon X3 sensor since 2023”. Although a prototype of the Foveon X3 sensor has been developed, some design errors were discovered, leading to the need for modifications. The modified design has been submitted to the manufacturing factory, and we are currently awaiting the next-generation prototype.

We are still in the design phase of the new image sensor, which may require the development of new manufacturing processes and further research. Therefore, it may take more time to develop the new sensor.

Confirmed: Sigma SD2 will have 29MP Foveon X3 Quattro CMOS Image Sensor

image-Next-Sigma-DSLR-to-feWe already published this news  July 30th, 2014 that Sigma CEO said they will use DP2 Quattro camera in upcoming Sigma SD2 camera..

Now today Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki again said that Sigma is planning to use the Foveon X3 Quattro Direct sensor of the DP2 Quattro camera in upcoming SD series camera..

First, we started with the sensor development. We had already been discussing what kind of sensor we make with the Foveon, Inc. and we as SIGMA wanted to improve image quality (resolution) by increasing the number of pixels. The Quattro image sensor was born to deal with the increased data. As the first camera to have the new sensor, we chose the dp because of the shockless body and the dedicated lens optimized for the ultra high-resolution capturing. Of course, we’re planning to use the sensor for the SLR SD body.

The first sigma SD1 DSLR was announced on 2012 and it was using the the same sensor of Sigma ‘Merrill’ camera, Sigma SD1 was announced at Photokina 2010.

I was actually hoping for something more better from Sigma for the upcoming SD2 series camera, share your thoughts with us in the comment box…

Sigma Fullframe Sensor Coming

image-Next-Sigma-DSLR-to-fe

Sigma finally changed its mood , since on December 27th, 2013 sigma representatives told to that (see the full article here), Sigma have no plans to Introduce FullFrame Camera

At Sigma we truly do not see the point of a 24x36mm sensor unless you absolutely must have the 2×3 aspect ratio. The Foveon sensor of both the SD1Merrill and the DP Merrill lines of cameras is superior to the 24x36mm sensors of our competitors.

Now according to a interview published on DC.watch, Kazuto Yamaki CEO of Sigma said

We receive many request to make a Full Frame Foveon. And we are aware the tendency now is to make larger sensors and with even more Megapixels.

other important points of the interview

– He believes time will come when Mirrorless will outsell DSLR. But DSLR will always exist as a niche product.
– We aim to achieve medium and large format quality with our foveon sensor tech
– Sigma has no plan to make an interchangeable mirrorless system camera yet.
– There is no plan yet to make a DP camera with zoom lens

If this is correct, my interpretation is:
“This really is a £2000 camera, you should judge it as a £2000 camera and compare it to £2000 cameras but owing to our engineering difficulties, it’s going to cost you £6,000. Sorry about that.”
So we are back to: who will buy a camera that is 3 or 4x over-priced owing to engineering problems. It was never meant to be a MF or D3x competitor, yet it ends up going up against them.
Dead in the water, surely?
