The CEO of Sigma Corporation recently stated in an interview regarding the Foveon X3 sensor: “Unfortunately, there has been no significant progress in the development of the Foveon X3 sensor since 2023”. Although a prototype of the Foveon X3 sensor has been developed, some design errors were discovered, leading to the need for modifications. The modified design has been submitted to the manufacturing factory, and we are currently awaiting the next-generation prototype.
We are still in the design phase of the new image sensor, which may require the development of new manufacturing processes and further research. Therefore, it may take more time to develop the new sensor.

Sigma Patent a Dual layer Foveon for the first time, in general Foveon sensors are made up of three layers. According to patent documents the new sensor will improve the readout speed of the sensor.
Sigma Foveon sensor Details Patent Details

- Image processing signal method, image signal processing apparatus, imaging apparatus
Each pixel has two layers of “B and G” or “G and R” as shown in a figure of embodiment.
We will sure see some improvements in low -light performance and readout speed of Sigma sensor, as we all know Foveon sensor are too good at base ISO but when you reach ISO 400 you can notice noise in your image and even ISO 1600 is bit unacceptable from a Foveon sensor. To solve this issue Sigma removed a layer from sensor and rearranged entire pixel structure. Hope to see some good cameras from Sigma in near future.

One of the biggest news coming from Sigma, Sigma is working on a new Foveon image sensor dedicated for Video purpose. For more details you can look at description below.
Take a look at the patent details below (Translated)
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high resolution still picture and moving picture using a multi-layer sensor in which all pixels have three or more color photoelectric conversion layers and which do not generate false color in principle, while reducing the data amount And performs high-speed readout.
An image pickup device having color separation in a thickness direction of an element and having photoelectric conversion layers of three or more colors, and control means for controlling reading of the image pickup element. In the image pickup device 200, the pixel information is read out by predetermined resolution for each layer separated in the thickness direction in the thickness direction, and at least one layer out of the color-separated layers of the image pickup element has the pixel information Is read out, and at least one layer is read out pixel information with a resolution lower than the highest resolution. The control unit 130 acquires luminance information from the pixel information of the layer read out with the highest resolution out of the layers separated from the color and outputs the pixel information of the layer other than the layer read out with the highest resolution Color information is acquired from pixel information of each layer so as to have the same resolution.

We already published this news July 30th, 2014 that Sigma CEO said they will use DP2 Quattro camera in upcoming Sigma SD2 camera..
Now today Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki again said that Sigma is planning to use the Foveon X3 Quattro Direct sensor of the DP2 Quattro camera in upcoming SD series camera..
First, we started with the sensor development. We had already been discussing what kind of sensor we make with the Foveon, Inc. and we as SIGMA wanted to improve image quality (resolution) by increasing the number of pixels. The Quattro image sensor was born to deal with the increased data. As the first camera to have the new sensor, we chose the dp because of the shockless body and the dedicated lens optimized for the ultra high-resolution capturing. Of course, we’re planning to use the sensor for the SLR SD body.
The first sigma SD1 DSLR was announced on 2012 and it was using the the same sensor of Sigma ‘Merrill’ camera, Sigma SD1 was announced at Photokina 2010.
I was actually hoping for something more better from Sigma for the upcoming SD2 series camera, share your thoughts with us in the comment box…

Sigma finally changed its mood , since on December 27th, 2013 sigma representatives told to that (see the full article here), Sigma have no plans to Introduce FullFrame Camera
At Sigma we truly do not see the point of a 24x36mm sensor unless you absolutely must have the 2×3 aspect ratio. The Foveon sensor of both the SD1Merrill and the DP Merrill lines of cameras is superior to the 24x36mm sensors of our competitors.
Now according to a interview published on DC.watch, Kazuto Yamaki CEO of Sigma said
We receive many request to make a Full Frame Foveon. And we are aware the tendency now is to make larger sensors and with even more Megapixels.
other important points of the interview
– He believes time will come when Mirrorless will outsell DSLR. But DSLR will always exist as a niche product.
– We aim to achieve medium and large format quality with our foveon sensor tech
– Sigma has no plan to make an interchangeable mirrorless system camera yet.
– There is no plan yet to make a DP camera with zoom lens
