Canon Working on Ultra Wide Zoom Lenses

The latest patent reveals Canon working on an ultrawide range of RF Mount lenses. Japanese website spotted all the three lens patents that Canon is currently working on.

Applicant: Canon Inc.
Publication Number: P2022065512
Application Number: P 2020174139
Publication Date: 2022-04-27 Title
of Invention: Zoom Lens and Imaging Device

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress aberration fluctuation at the time of magnification change in a small and wide-angle zoom lens.
As a wide-angle zoom lens, Patent Document 1 and Patent Document 2 disclose a zoom lens that moves the first lens group on the most object side to perform scaling.
However, in the zoom lenses disclosed in Patent Documents 1 and 2, the length of the back focus increases the diameter of the first lens group, and the weight of the first lens group to be moved at the time of scaling increases. Moreover, since a wide-angle lens uses a plurality of large-diameter lenses to widen the angle and correct distortion, the weight of the first lens group tends to increase. As a result, it becomes difficult to suppress an increase in aberration due to eccentricity during the movement of the first lens group.
In the present invention, there is provided a compact zoom lens capable of suppressing aberration fluctuations at the time of scaling while having a wide angle.

Example 1 (9-18mm F4)

Lens overall length 126.84 126.84 126.84
Back focus 20.24 18.24 32.59

Example 4 (10-20mm F4) Focal length 10.3 14.8 20

F number 4.12 4.12 4.12
Half angle of view (°) 62.16 54.44 47.25
Image height 19.5 20.7 21.64
Lens total length 129.57 129.57 129.57
Back focus 20 16.89 18.38

As usual, we know that a patent takes at least 2 years of time to become a real product. And at the same time, all the patents do not always get’s approved. So, here we are not so sure which of the three lenses will arrive as a real product in the market.

Canon Patent - Working on a New Adapter

Those who know how many pins a Canon regular EF-S to EF-M or an EF to RF adapter has will sure know this is completely a new breed. Maybe we are wrong, if this thing already exists somewhere inside Canon, OR if you know a Canon 12 pin-based adapter then let us know (as of April 17, 2022).

It’s really interesting to see Canon working towards new tech. We hope and expect we will soon new innovations in future soon.

Just for reference purposes – The above is EF-EOS M (APS-C Mirrorless) and the below is EF to EOS R adapter.

Canon to Use DPAF Technique for AI Blur

We all know Canon is now busy making next-generation vlogging cameras. And their R&D team working with the DPAF technique to introduce an AI blur function inside the camera. So, once you will push the AI Blur button the Camera will automatically set your lens to its Max aperture, and then with the help of DPAF pixels advance AI algorithms (BLRrmax) the camera will allow users to fine-tune the type of bokeh or introduce more blur.

Although the Patent is very NEW, So we can expect such a feature in the Canon camera sometime in 2023 or later.

Literature from Patent Document

To provide an imaging apparatus that suppresses an overlap of a blur with respect to an in-focus region when imaging for a composite image of depth composition while maintaining a sense of resolution.SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus (digital camera 100) has an imaging unit 22 that captures a plurality of images captured with angles of view at least parts of which are overlapped with subjects and at different focal positions, a system control unit 50 that acquires distance information of the subjects and acquires a difference in distances based on the distance information to set a diaphragm value based on the difference in distances, and an image processing unit 24 that synthesizes a plurality of images. The imaging unit 22 captures a plurality of images with the diaphragm value set by the system control unit 50.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2

The image processing unit 24 calculates some blurring rates by performing the above calculation on all adjacent regions (for example, regions 511 and 513 in FIG. 5, and regions 512 and 513).

In step S405, the image processing unit 24 sets the maximum blur rate calculated in step S404 as the maximum blur rate.

Next, in step S305, the system control unit 50 determines the aperture value based on the allowable blur amount.
The allowable blur amount referred to here may be preset depending on the properties of the lens or the like, or may be set by the user.

Next, in step S305, the system control unit 50 determines the aperture value based on the allowable blur amount.
The allowable blur amount referred to here may be preset depending on the properties of the lens or the like, or may be set by the user.

First, the amount of blur d on the imaging unit 22 can be calculated by the following (Equation 5).
However, D represents the effective aperture, and BLRrmax represents the maximum blur rate estimated in step S304.

Canon Ring type Wearable Camera Patent

TNCexclusive: Canon working on some very small yet innovative wearable cameras. In the latest patent surfaced over the web we can clearly see Canon Ring-type Camera patent.

Details from the patent text

To realize a wearable camera that allows a user to readily change an imaging direction and imaging parameters. [Solution] This imaging device 10 comprises a device body 10 equipped with mounting members 21-26 for use in mounting operations; a ring-shaped rotary member 12 capable of rotating relative to the device body; and an imaging unit 13, 14 for capturing an image. When the rotary member is rotated, a change is made to the imaging direction and/or the imaging parameters of the imaging unit.

Well, it’s really very interesting to see Canon is also working on wearable cameras for the future. Hope we will see this patent as a product soon in upcoming years. Do share your thoughts with us.

Canon Working on Next Generation of Cinema Camera

Image of EOS C700 PL

Canon wants to create the Next generation of Cinema cameras. A recent patent surfaced over the web clearly shows that Canon wants to reduce the thickness of the cinema camera and make it more portable by reducing the pluggability of cables in the camera. More details below

Patent Details

Application JP20191A events  – 2019-12-12
Application filed by Canon Inc- 2019-12-12
Priority to JP20191A – 2020-03-26

Translated Patent

To provide a device that is able to prevent a cable from being caught and a connector from being separated while achieving a thickness reduction in a width direction of an apparatus body.SOLUTION: A device 101 has a device body having a front side, a rear side and a side face disposed between them. The side face has a plurality of inclined faces including a first inclined face and a second inclined face. Each of the plurality of inclined faces includes a first end and a second end. The first end of each of the plurality of inclined faces is located nearer to the rear side than the second end. The first end of each of the plurality of inclined faces is located nearer to an optical axis than the second end in a width direction. The plurality of inclined faces are located so as not to overlap one other as viewed from the width direction and arranged such that some of them overlap as viewed from an optical axis direction. A plurality of external connection terminals are provided on the first inclination face. The second inclination face is provided with one external connection terminal displaced in the width direction and in a height direction orthogonal to the optical axis from all the external connection terminals of the first inclination face.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2

the present invention reduces the pluggability of the cable with respect to the external connection terminal even when a plurality of external connection terminals are arranged on the side surface in the width direction of the device main body, while reducing the width of the apparatus main body such as an imaging device in the width direction. Provided is a technique for preventing a cable from being caught or a connector from being disconnected without the need for the same.
