Alex from Magic Lantern posted a new information regarding the improvement of dynamic range of your Canon EOS 5D Mark III or Canon EOS 7D to 14 stops. The ML team working on a new technique of “Dual ISO”, By using the Dual ISO they are able to boost dynamic range by 3 stops, It’s a completely a new way of taking a photo by using ISO 100 for some of the vertical lines and ISO 1600 for the rest of it. There will be a process to combining the lines of 100/1600 ISO to give you the full resolution file. No more details available yet,
From Alex ML at forum
Usage
– 5D3: works for both raw photo and raw video. 7D: photo only.
– Select one ISO from Canon menu, the other from Dual ISO submenu.
– Expose to the right for the lower ISO (usually ISO 100). Maybe darken 1 stop from there.
– Start at ISO 100/1600.
– Try a larger gap for really extreme situations, or a smaller gap for better midtone detail (less aliasing).
Histograms, ETTR, playback tricks [5D3 only]
– Raw zebras will use the darker exposure for highlight warnings and the brighter one for shadow warnings.
– Raw histogram will use the darker exposure. Consider the brighter one as some sort of shadow recovery.
– JPEG zebras/histogram are totally unreliable.
– In photo LiveView you will see the ISO from Canon menu. In movie mode, you will see horizontal lines.
– ETTR will use the darker exposure.
– Playback in 1x will show some sort of HDR preview. At certain zoom levels, you’ll be able to see only one of the two exposures, at very low resolution.
– The dynamic range indicator from the histogram is not accurate.

Take a look between the comparison between H264 compression vs Magic Lanterns 14 Bit RAW, RAW video look better to me…. see the video below
An ISO test comparing Canons H264 compression vs Magic Lantern’s 14 Bit RAW hack.
First I converted the RAW files with ML’s raw2dng.
- Next I dragged the files into Photoshop which opened up Adobe Camera Raw.
- I selected the first image and used the auto white balance setting which got rid of the heavy magenta tone.
- Then I synchronized the additional files, and exported them as 16bit tiff files.
- First I tried to use QuickTime 7 to create an image sequence, but it render the video with incorrect color.
- So instead of QT I ended up using Final Cut Pro X to create an image sequence to a ProRes 422 HQ output.

Affected Products
EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR Camera
EOS-1D X Digital SLR Camera
Details
Depending upon the shooting conditions, it may take slightly longer for the EOS 5D Mark III and EOS-1D X digital SLR cameras to acquire focus when using the Speedlite’s AF Assist Beam, compared with that of the EOS 5D Mark II and EOS-1D Mark IV digital SLR cameras using the Speedlite’s AF Assist Beam.
We are developing a solution to enhance the focusing feature for the EOS 5D Mark III and EOS-1D X and plan to release a firmware update based on following estimated schedule:

Take a look at the HIGH ISO Test between Canon 6D and 5D Mark III, Canon 6D performance is bit better during the High ISO test due to….. lower Megapixel Count, Canon 5D Mark III features 20.2 Megapixel Sensor and Canon 5D Mark III features 22.3 Megapixel sensor,
See what ephotozine said about the test
The Canon EOS 6D is noticeably cheaper than the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, making the case for the 5D Mark III even more difficult to justify.
The Canon EOS 6D may deliver lower resolution images (20mp vs 22mp), however this gives the 6D the benefit of lower noise at higher ISOs. The Canon EOS 6D also benefits from a smaller body, as well as built in GPS and Wi-Fi, although these last two features do have a negative effect on battery life when used. The Canon EOS 6D has noticeably less focus points, just 11 compared to 61 on the 6D, which could be another concern for some.

NEW FIRMWARE UPDATE FOR CANON EOS 5D MARK III DIGITAL SLR CAMERA PROVIDES UNCOMPRESSED HDMI OUTPUT SUPPORT AND IMPROVED AF PERFORMANCE
LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., October 23, 2012 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced a new firmware update for the EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR camera that significantly improves the camera’s performance and usability. In response to requests from professionals working in the fields of cinema and television production, the firmware update enables the use of uncompressed HDMI Output support, making possible more efficient video editing and monitoring procedures. Additionally, the upgrade supports the advanced needs of photographers through improved AF performance when capturing still images.
Uncompressed HDMI Output Support
When shooting video, HDMI Output makes possible the recording of high-definition uncompressed video data (YCbCr 4:2:2, 8 bit) from the EOS 5D Mark III to an external recorder via the camera’s HDMI terminal. This, in turn, facilitates the editing of video data with minimal image degradation for greater on-site workflow efficiency during motion picture and video productions. Additionally, video being captured can be displayed on an external monitor, enabling real-time, on-site monitoring of high-definition video during shooting.
Improved AF Functionality
Even when the EOS 5D Mark III is equipped with an extender and lens making possible a maximum aperture of f/8, the firmware update supports AF employing the camera’s central cross-type points (currently compatible with maximum apertures up to f/5.6). Accordingly, the update will allow users to take advantage of AF when shooting distant subjects, benefitting sports and nature photographers, particularly when using telephoto lenses.
The new firmware update will be available, at no charge, in April 2013 from the Canon U.S.A. website and can be downloaded by end users or through Canon Factory Service Centers.
