Sensor : Both the camera features almost same resolution sensor, there is no big difference here. But, the Canon 1DX Mark II features Dual-pixel CMOS AF sensor that quickly lock-down AF while you are using your DSLR display screen while shooting or recording a 4K video.

On the other side the Nikon D5 built-with traditional CMOS sensor so while you are using display for shooting still or recording a video contrast based AF system get’s activated resulting slower AF compared to its competitor.

ISO Range: The ISO range of the Nikon D5 is EPIC, on paper Nikon is creating world record, the camera expandable ISO range touched 3.3 Million mark on the other side Nikon D5 standard ISO range is 102400. Canon Standard ISO range is 51200 and its expandable ISO range is 409600.

ISO Standard Expandable
Canon 1DX Mark II 51200 409600
Nikon D5 102400 3280000

From the specification we can say that Nikon will undoubtedly will give you neat and clean low-light images, with better dynamic range.

But believe me I have seen the image samples of both the camera and being a pro shooter I will never allow myself to go beyond ISO 25600 in both the camera.

AF System: Now the DSLR AF system divided into two parts, part one talks about the core – the AF module used inside the camera and in second part we will discuss the type of sensor used inside the camera.

Canon-1DX-MK-II-vs-Nikon-D5

Part 1 – Nikon features 153 AF Points – 99 Cross Type points that covers a very large part of the screen and easily grabs AF on still or moving subject, Canon 1DX Mark II AF module remains same as of its predecessor,  61-point AF system, expanded range, 41-point cross-type.

AF Module
AF Points Standard Cross-type
Canon 1DX Mark II 61 41
Nikon D5 153 99
Sensor
Canon 1DX Mark II Hybrid Contrast Detect + Phase Detect
Nikon D5 Standard Contrast Detect

Nikon does have better AF module than Canon, Canon have better hybrid AF sensor compared to Nikon D5.

AF sensor is utilized while shooting the viewfinder and Hybrid CMOS AF sensor is unitized while you are using display for shooting still or video.

Continuous shooting speed: Canon 1DX Mark II is bit better to Nikon D5, however even extra 1 frame can make you a true winner.

Video: Nikon D5 4K video recording limit is of 3min only. The Nikon D5 video recording limit has now become a running joke in the market, So Nikon desperately work on enhancing video recording limit of the camera.

Display: Nikon D5 and Canon 1DX Mark II camera now comes with touch display unit, however the D5 display features higher resolution compared to Canon display unit.

Verdict: Both camera have excellent core specification, Nikon D5 does showing more green lights on specification sheet but it doesn’t mean Canon 1DX Mark II is inferior.

Take a close look at both camera core specification and select the best one according to your needs.

Canon 1DX Mark II vs Sony A7R II

canon-1DX-Mk-II-vs-A7R-IICanon 1DX features newly developed Hybrid CMOS sensor and traditional AF system from 1DX, a killer combo on the other hand the Sony A7R II features Hybrid AF sensor with 399 AF points.

Let’s talk about the number game, the 399 Phase AF pixels inside the Sony sensor looks like a very big quantity.. but I recommend not to run behind the number game of AF points or ISO range…

Literally every two sub-pixel  inside the Canon sensor does the AF job, so we can say that Canon 1DX Mark II have 20 sub-million pixels and 10 million pixels are responsible for AF.

Sensor  -Resolution, ISO and Sensor based AF

The Sony A7R II features super resolution 42 Megapixel sensor, but Canon 1DX Mark II resolution remains limited to 20 Megapixel. However, despite of having 2X more dense pixel structure Sony manages to produce MAX ISO range of 409600 similar to that of Canon 1DX.

ISO range of both the camera is same, so introduce Dual-Pixel CMOS AF sensor inside the Canon 1DX Mark II camera until we see some read world test we can’t say which one is good.

Continuous shooting speed: Canon 1DX Mark II feature 16 fps continuous shooting speed on the other hand the Sony A7R II remains limited to 5 fps, the big hurdel in front of Sony is the processing of 42 MP image data and on the other hand we have Canon 1DX Mark II with 20.2 MP sensor.

Verdict

Both the completely different system based on photographers need and budget, Sony A7R II and Canon 1DX Mark II both have advance core specification. If you are a hobbyist and looking for a prefect system in less cost A7R II

Sony does have limited set of lenses to choose from, so photographers may feel bit suffocated while selecting the Sony camera. So before buying the camera do a extensive market research.

The other big factor is professional support after sale, Canon and Nikon have worldwide professional support staff to assist you after your product purchase.

Canon 1DX Mark II vs Canon 1DX — Sensor

The Canon 1DX mark II comes with slight increase resolution that will sure help commercial photographers to get more detail in the image that will sure help while taking out the large print-outs. More resolution also helps you while you re-compose your image while setting in the chair via digital zoom, however the 2MP difference won’t will never allow me to invest $5999 and buy a new camera instead of my current 1DX.

Introduction of Dual-Pixel CMOS Auto Focus sensor inside a Canon fullframe camera – Canon 1DX Mark II is the Canon first still FF DSLR to get the Dual pixel AF technology, although we have told you earlier many times that Canon will soon bring Dual-Pixel CMOS AF tech to FF DSLR after implementing it inside the 1DC cinema camera.

The other biggest difference is the ISO range- The Canon 1DX mark II enjoys 1-stop more ISO than its predecessor, the Canon 1DX was limited to 2014800 on the other hand the Canon 1DX mark II was limited to 409600.. so the 1-stop difference will allow 1DX mark II camera to get cleaner images in low-light condition.

A feature guide can be accessed for the selected menu, providing detailed reference information when needed.

Increased resolution and fine detail, with lens aberration correction and diffraction correction via new in-camera Digital Lens Optimizer technology.

To combat any possible image degradation from lens aberration and diffraction, the EOS-1D X Mark II camera is equipped with a number of in-camera optical correction functions for clear and high-quality images. The EOS-1D X Mark II even stores lens aberration data, helping to eliminatethe need to register lens data on previously released lenses, and correcting images with virtually no delay in-camera. The EOS-1D X Mark II not only corrects peripheral brightness and chromatic aberration, but also features distortion correction plus diffraction correction, which has been included for the first time in an EOS camera. Distortion correction helps resolve barrel and pincushion distortions, while diffraction correction virtually eliminates the blurring effects from diffraction that can be created when capturing an image at a small aperture. The camera’s Dual DIGIC 6+ Image Processors help ensure these corrections can be made with virtually no effect on operational speed. In-camera RAW processing is also made fast and convenient with Canon’s Digital Lens Optimizer, helping to improve image quality and giving photographers the ability to work confidently in more complex environments.
