Sony PMW F3 S-Log Test

A month ago in march Sony announced a firmware upgrade for the PMW-F3 which enables S-Log gamma mode, Dual Link 4:4:4 RGB video output, 3G-SDI output, four pre-loaded LUTs etc. In simple words after this firmware upgrade the dynamic range of the camera increases to 800%. The S-Log – opens up the true potential of this camera, firmware will be available this summer for a list price of $3,300.

Will this upgrade from sony will make you sell your Red Epic Camera? see the First Sony F3 S-Log Test video and find out

New York City, NY (April 18, 2011) Next Level Pictures in association with Tstop Cinema teamed up with Abel Cine, Kessler Crane, Wide Open Camera, Angenieux, Carl Zeiss, Cooke, Tyler Mounts, and Miller to unveil the worlds first ever camera test using the Sony F3 with S-Log. S-Log isn’t scheduled for official release until late summer 2011 so we are proud to get our hands on the camera and put it through several latitude tests to include helicopter aerials by Vincent Laforet, vibrant Vegas city lights, and skin tone tests of two models in ten different locations throughout Las Vegas at NAB 2011. The crew of twelve had only ten hours with the camera to produce and film the entire project. The purpose of this test is to compare the latitude and image quality of the new S-Log firmware to native EX codec.

SF to Timelapse Paris Shot with a Canon 5d2

I shot a photo roughly every two miles between take-off in San Francisco and landing in Paris CDG to make this airplane time lapse. More of these wacky time lapses at http://beepshow.com

Shot with a 5d2, a time-lapse controller, and a 16mm – 35mm, mixed with some iPhone shots. The music is a modified template “Gain” used with permission from DETUNE ltd. denkitribe http://soundcloud.com/denkitribe/gain – I arranged on the Korg iMS20 iPad App. Edits and pans in After Effects CS5 and iMovie.

The photos during take-off and landing are all computer models and totally rendered because I would never use an electronic device when the FAA prohibits them. I did get lucky and have a whole row to myself to setup the tripod and gear.

Thanks to my neighbors for not minding an SLR click every 2 to 30 seconds for 11 hours, and thanks to the whole Air France flight crew for being insanely friendly and allowing me to shoot. Thanks to @ztaylor for showing me the Korg iMS20 iPad App. Thanks to @jayzombie and the #nerdbird on the way to SXSW this year for helping me come up with the idea. Thanks to @somnabulent for the idea of live scoring. Thanks to you for actually reading this far. You are a champion.

Nikon D5100 Review at Cnet

Though it doesn’t rank first based on any individual aspect of the camera, the Nikon D5100 delivers a solid combination of image quality, performance, features, and design that puts it out in front if you’re looking for a well-rounded option under $1,000.

Amateur photographer hands on review

The camera is 10% smaller than its predecessor, with a new curvier design. It looks almost like a bridge camera, with the kit lens attached and despite the plastic body, still feels solid in the hand. The grip uses an elastic rubber material, which also helps to maintain a solid hold of the camera

New Fujifilm X100 Reviews

Conclusion of reviews posted on different websites

Photoradar.com(click here) the X100 is a well-crafted camera with a range of useful functionality and excellent image quality. It’s only really let down by slow writing times and minor operation issues, but otherwise it truly delivers.

photographyblog(click here) the X100 scores a bullseye in terms of the photos that it produces. Noise is noticeable only by its almost complete absence throughout the ISO range of 100-12,800, while the Dynamic Range function helps to boost contrast and detail. The 23mm lens is sharp from the center to the edges, while the F/2 maximum aperture makes it easy to creatively throw the background out of focus. The X100 is right up there with the best APS-C sensor cameras on the market.

ephotozine.com(click here) For a long time the difference in image quality between compact cameras with small sensors, and Digital SLRs with much larger sensors has been well known. The Fujifilm FinePix X100 aims to bring the image quality of a large sensor to a smaller camera, and should also bring the speed of DSLRs with it. Thankfully Fujifilm has delivered both excellent image quality with extremely low noise levels…
