120 Panasonic Lumix GH4s Creating 3D Figurine Portraits

120-panasonic-GH4-camera-im

Panasonic installed a photo booth in in Osaka and used 120 Lumix DMC-GH4 cameras to make the effective 3D figurine portraits . Through ultra fast 3D scanning with limited time frame of 1/1000 sec, the image of the subject captured is sharp even if it will be in motion , hanging in the air or any other position.

Video in Japanese.

To obtain the 3D portraits, the cameras are arranged in grid pattern covering the floor to ceiling of the booth facing towards the walls of the cylindrical booth. It is synchronized in such a way that the trigger of the camera goes on every one millionth of a second. In this process it collects 2 billion pixels of information and results in 1/10th life-size images.

How Panasonic DFD Technology Work?

While looking at the recently published spec comparison at our website many of our users are sending few common questions to us, it includes; How Panasonic is able to do AF in just 0.07 sec with the help of contrast based technology? Does DFD technology is actually a firmware or hardware thing ? Where does the Panasonic DFD Actually placed, inside the sensor or somewhere else ?

dfd-GRAPH

I want to keep this post as short as possible

What is DFD?

Panasonic DFD is hardware and exclusively designed & developed by Panasonic and it’s not a software. DFD autofocus relies on special hardware in the camera’s processor, so can’t be brought to older models via firmware updates.

How it Work?

Before we explain that we have to understand how the traditional contrast based system work, the traditional contrast detect system based camera actually. Camera having a normal contrast based Sensor determines the best focus point by moving the AF ring and scanning the entire subject, once the scan is done the lens AF reverse back to peak focus point. However when a Panasonic camera uses DFD technology, it quickly predict aka calculate the AF point and move AF point quickly there, finally it uses contrast based system to fine-tune the AF point.

So don’t get confused that Panasonic newly announced camera is using contrast based system only, the Camera AF based on DFD tech and later it fine-tuned by contrast AF. The biggest advantage of this technology that sensor doesn’t have any single dead pixel like other Hybrid AF sensors have for phase AF.

New features inside Panasonic GX8

Panasonic-GX8-img

Before the announcement of Panasonic GX8 camera there were no options to the users to go beyond the 16 megapixels limit for Micro Four Thirds (MFT) sensors. Its 5-axis Image stabilization system is designed in such a manner that it will work in two way, it sync with Lens based IS system and hence you get Dual IS system based camera that combat camera shake very effectively.

Hence, after showing its incredible features of all the sections we can undoubtedly think it as one of the unique product of Panasonic.

  1.  The most important feature of the camera is dual IS system, The GX8 features built-in 5 axis Image stabilization system as well it also supports lens based IS of Lumix O.I.S lenses. Both system work very effectively with each other and gives excellent result when used in adverse situation.
  2. Panasonic DFD Technology, the Panasonic DFD technology (Depth-From-Defocus) is added in the system camera to calculate the distance of the subject and adjust its focus quickly, as fast as 0.07 seconds. With the help of DFD technology the camera can shoot 6 frames per second with full time Auto-focus support. Additionally, supporting working in low-light conditions, a Starlight AF feature enables accurate AF performance down to -4 EV.
  3. 4K Still image mode; The Panasonic GX8 is capable to capture 8MP of still images @ 30fps, it’s more than enough for a sports shooter. The biggest advantage GX8 is you can record 8 MP of still images upto 30min.
  4. Panasonic GX8 can captures 4K video at 30 frames per second and 24 frames per second at 100 Mbps in MP4 format. The camera Can also record Full HD videos @ 1080p/60, both formats are available for Full HD video mode, MP4 and AVCHD.
  5.  1/16,000 sec of electronic and 1/8000 of mechanical shutter speed. The GX8 camera can touch its shutter speed upto 1/16,000 sec. to better enable working in bright conditions and with wider aperture settings.

These above mentioned features are class leading and make GX8 a prefect choice for mirrorless shooter.

Canon-5D-Mark-IV-image3. Canon 5D Mark IV – Again we have a Canon camera in the list, the Canon 5D Mark IV expected arrival date is coming closer day by day, I am actually bit tired of reading non–reliable rumors every day in my email and everywhere on web, Take a look at the list of possible specification floating over the web..a total of three random core specification floating over the web, those starts from a 18 MP fullframe sensor to 24 MP FF sensor and finally ends on a 28 MP FF sensor. But according to the last & latest rumored specification I have published is taken from a forum and published by senior member, according to him Canon will announce two different models of Canon 5D Camera in near feature : –

  • Canon 5DX – Sports oriented photography, fast AF system, low resolution sensor for fast continuous shooting speed and optimized lowlight performance.

Canon-1DX-Mark-II-image4. Canon 1DX Mark II – On June 14th 2015 we have published a detailed information related to Canon 1DX Mark II Rumor, The most important part of the rumor was the line ” The EOS 5D Mark IV will come after the EOS-1D X Mark II announcement.”, however no more information related to 1DX successor available after that day.

Panasonic Light-Field Technology Coming in GX8 and FZ300 Camera

Panasonic-shoot-first-focus

Panasonic shoot-first focus later camera rumor was actually a new ‘Post Focus’ technology for LUMIX cameras,  the technology is ready to be implemented in the Panasonic recently announced Panasonic GX8 and FZ300 camera via a firmware update, however the exact date of firmware announcement is not known, it may arrive on Q4 of 2015 or Q1 of 2016.

The lens of the camera will quickly focus on the 50 different AF points of the scene and will compose it in single shot, the camera will use 4K mode to compose single image by conserving 50 different AF area of the scene, This is particularly effective for landscapes and macro photography.

More details at Press Release –

Panasonic develops new ‘Post Focus’ technology for LUMIX Cameras

New ‘Post Focus’ Technology enables areas of a photograph to be in-focus AFTER shooting

Panasonic is developing new ‘Post Focus’ technology for LUMIX cameras to expand creativity by enabling users to easily select their preferred in-focus area from their images, and create a number of different pictures from a single shot.

The new ‘Post Focus’ mode will work in conjunction with the capabilities of Panasonic’s high-speed, high-precision DFD (Depth From Defocus) autofocus technology, and 4K Photo mode, which allows 4K Burst shooting for up to 30 frames per second continuously for up to 30 minutes.

When ‘Post Focus’ mode is set, the camera quickly shifts the lens to set focus on approximately 50 areas. After taking the shot, users can then select one or more frames from the 4K Burst series where the different points of focus make interesting images. This is particularly effective for landscapes and macro photography.

Panasonic will introduce this Post Focus function for the first time via a firmware update for the LUMIX DMC-GX8, DMC-FZ300 and other selected models in late 2015 to early 2016, and will look at plans to integrate it in future LUMIX cameras.

Sensor: The sensor size of both the camera is same but they features different resolution, the Panasonic GX8 4/3 sensor features 20 MP sensor as well as the Panasonic GH4 features a 16 MP 4/3 sensor.  The sensor inside the Panasonic GX8 is actually newly designed and developed by Sony, so despite of having same size and same ISO range I do believe the sensor inside the Panasonic GX8 will capture better still and video compared the GH4 camera.

With the help of new Venus Engine IX image processor and Sony IMX 269 sensor the camera is able to record 4K video at 30 and 24 fps, not only that you can also shoot 4K snaps (8 megapixels) @ 30 frames per second, that’s more than enough for capturing a live F1 event.

Panasonic GH4 full resolution continuous shooting speed is approx 12 fps and on the other hand the Panasonic GX8 continuous shooting speed is limited to 10 fps only, however keep in mind that the resolution of GX8 is bit high compared to the GH4.

The other major advantage of the new image processor is increase in the AF speed of the camera, although both camera is based on contrast based system but due to the addition of Venus Engine IX processor the AF speed is now approx 40% faster than the AF speed of GX7.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8 vs. Panasonic GH4 2

Due to the presence of Electronic shutter in GX8 camera you get electronic shutter speed of 1/16000 sec where as the GH4 shutter speed is limited to 1/8000, with the Panasonic GX8 you can easily capture any sports event or flying bird in the air (highly suitable for sports and wildlife photography)

The Panasonic GX8 carry built-in WiFi and NFC, with the help of WiFi you can easily share your files whereas the with the NFC you can easily control you camera from a distance, you can use any of you NFC enabled smart device to control your camera. The Panasonic GH4 carries only built-in WiFi tag, so it can only used for sharing files.

Verdict: The Panasonic GX8 features improved core specification compared to the Panasonic GH4 camera, you get a camera with bit better core specification at $500 less.
