Panasonic GH6 Wild Rumors

According to latest rumors coming from trusted rumor mill. Panasonic GH6 camera may use 35mm / Fullframe sensor. Take a look at the rumored specification of the camera coming straight out from rumor mill.

– There seem to be discussion that next GH will have a Super 35 sensor (full size to be enabled by key),
– higher resolution (33 MP frames required for 8K)
– special pixel binning algorithm for low light applications
– Dual ISO (We have seen inside GH5s not new)

— end of rumor part —-

See, from this rumor it’s very clear that from M4/3 system the entire GH series will jump to FF system.

What will happen is we use M4/3 Lenses on a FF sensor.

  • Firstly, yes, you would get a crop, or it’s better to say you will only use  “partial” FF sensor
  • M4/3 lenses vignette in FF mode (big issue)

So, if GH series camera will have a FF sensor inside then they have to Make these basic changes to existing M4/3 camera. That includes Introduction of Mode Selector – FF Mode – M4/3 Mode as well as introduction of L-Mount in GH series camera.

If this rumor is true than literally a GH series will become a Half-cooked S1 series camera.

I don’t think this rumor is true.

And finally some definitions  (food for thought)

Pixel Binning vs. Skipping vs Oversampling

  • Binning is the combining of photosite sensor values as they’re read from the sensor and then sent to the demosaicing process.
  • Skipping is literally skipping over some sensor values.
  • Oversampling is reading more pixels than the final output format supports, and uses Downsampling, or scaling, to combine values, which is done after demosaicing.

Canon DPAF vs Panasonic DFD

Panasonic GX9 vs Canon 200D II or its better to say Canon DPAF vs Panasonic DFD. AF test has been done in by dpreview staff in still and video mode both. Most interestingly Canon entry level camera with DFD AF system performing surprisingly well in video mode compared to Panasonic GX9 camera with DFD AF system.

Panasonic S1H vs Panasonic GH5

With very limited video specification Panasonic completed the development announcement of the Panasonic S1H camera. The camera is still under development process and lot of specs remains unconfirmed. However, Panasonic does confirmed all of us that the upcoming camera will capture 6K video without crop and which is of-course a groundbreaking thing.

Panasonic S1H vs Panasonic GH5, take a look at quick specification comparison between the Panasonic S1H and the Panasonic GH5.

Panasonic S1H Panasonic GH5
TBA (Most probably 24.2MP Full-Frame MOS Sensor) 20.3MP Digital Live MOS Sensor
Venus Engine Image Processor

6K 24fps (3:2 aspect ratio, No Crop)

5.9K 30fps (16:9 aspect ratio)

4K Video with No Crop
4K DCI & UHD 4:2:2 10-bit 60fps Internal 4:2:2 10-Bit 4K Video at 24/30p
Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization 5-Axis Sensor Stabilization; Dual I.S. 2
5.760K-dot 120Hz OLED EVF 0.76x 3.68m-Dot OLED Viewfinder
3.2″ triaxial Touchscreen tilting LCD 3.2″ 1.62m-Dot Free-Angle Touchscreen
Price (Body Only) $4000 (approx)   $1497

So, right we have only the video specification of the camera. And it’s look very impressive compared to Panasonic GH5.

With Panasonic S1H you get a option to record 4K videos at 24 fps, but the aspect ratio is 3:2. So If you record high resolution videos for production purpose than u have to use 5.9K @30fps which gives you standard 16:9 aspect ratio.

One more thing you are getting in Panasonic S1H is you can record 4K video recording mode 4:2:2 10-bit 60fps.

Additionally you are also getting larger sensor area so details will be great as well as low-light performance is also expected to be better than of M4/3s sensor.

So, overall Panasonic S1H do have a upper hand when we talk about video recording modes. but is will cost you 2X and more

No information about bit-rates and ISO range in still and video mode available for now. We will update this specs once we will get the full specification of the camera officially from Panasonic.

Panasonic GH6 will also get goodness of S1H, but not so soon. We have to wait till next year.

Panny Pushing Limits with 6K Camera, Canikon Remain Silent ?

With only one image and very limited details Panasonic completed the development announcement of S1H camera.

This camera is industry first FF Mirrorless camera able to record 6k videos at 24 frames per second internally. So, they are pushing up-limits of camera industry limit to a next level, while recording 6K videos Panasonic uses entire sensor area and it also means you can record unlimited amount of 18MP+ files @ 24fps with the new Panasonic S1H camera.

Panasonic S1H camera is hitting out the limits of video industry.

We were expecting 6k video recording options from Sony A7S III camera, at the same time Sony senior manager also hinted that they are creating a camera beyond someone’s expectations. There are several interviews, they clearly tells us that they are creating a 6k consumer level video camera.

18 megapixel stills from Panasonic S1H

Panasonic S1H is also highly capable still camera, since when you are creating a 6k video you are recording 18 megapixel at 24 frames per second. Panasonic S1H camera gives you enormous possibilities to grab the perfect picture which was not what possible with the previous generation of hybrid cameras.

This camera will sure going to help wedding photographers, event shooters to grab a perfect pictures later on while sitting in the editing room.

4K created from oversampled 6k videos

highly detailed 4K video footage from the Panasonic S1H camera at the same time the 4K videos are more stabilized according to Panasonic since they are being oversampled from 6k just like we have in the Sony A7 III, and the Sony A9 camera.

DFD AF System again

The only lag you can find about this camera is DFD AF system which is typically based on contrast based AF system. It do need a good amount of light to lock AF quickly otherwise the AF lag is noticeable.

Before Sony A7S III Announcement

But just before Sony A7 III announcement, Panasonic grabbed all the limelight by doing development announcement their flagship video oriented full frame mirrorless camera which uses the L-mount and capture 6k video at 24 frames per second at the same time the camera also features built-in images stabilization system which was absent in the Panasonic GH 5S camera. probably due to the heat dissipation issue Panasonic engineers at that time we are not able to add the IBIS feature inside the Panasonic GH 5S camera.

Now what about Sony ? We are sure that Sony A7S III camera will have Hybrid AF system with super accurate and fast Eye AF as we have seen inside A7III camera integrated with 6K video recording capability. At the same time Sony will also push low-light limit and this time we do expect they will cross up the ISO 409600 barrier with Sony A7S III.

Canon  should be doing that ? – When we talk about pushing limits

Canon DSLR and Mirrorless camera do not have proper 4K video mode (all suffer from Crop issues and some of them have CDAF AF system in 4K mode). In an interview Canon rep said that they donot want to cannibalize their cinema range of cameras that’s why DSLR and Mirrorless have limited video modes.

BTW, I personally think, they should give all they have to consumers without putting any forced limitation, otherwise Sony and Panasonic will Cannibalize Canon Camera division.

Nikon is giving 100% what they have, I don’t have any complain about Nikon but they should move fast. Nikon announced Z6 and Z7 camera same time without being worried about Z7 low sales, ( Z6  may kill some sales of Z7 due to affordable price tag and more video centered camera). Based on the latest set of information we have they will be soon announcing new Mirrorless cameras and a DX format mirrorless camera with same Z-mount to retain the versatility of the DSLR era.

What you think about Panasonic S1H announcement do share your thoughts with us.

Panasonic S1H Camera Press Release, Full Specification and Intro Videos

  • 14+ stops of dynamic range
  • V-Log/V-Gamut
  • 4:3 Anamorphic mode
  • No time limits on recording
  • 225-Area DFD Contrast-Detect AF system
  • Sensor-Shift Image Stabilisation
  • 3.2″ triaxial tilting LCD (no flippy out LCD here, folks!)
  • 5.760K-dot 120Hz OLED EVF

They have done their best to Manage overheating issue

Panasonic engineers done their best to manage heat suppression inside the camera. But, as we all know the higher the video resolution the more heat it generate,  they have done their best to mange hear suppression inside the camera. However, the company also says that once the temperature of the camera goes above the certified temperature range the camera will automatically stop video recording.

4K oversampled from 6K

With a completely new sensor, the camera now does a 6K full pixel readout to produce ‘perfect’ oversampled 4K video.  At the same time the image stabilization is also more improved.

With the support of V-Log / V-Gamut with a dynamic range of 14 stops the camera has become industry best Mirrorless camera for cinematographers. Note that the S1H’s recording format is compatible with the V-Log format recorded by a VariCam or the V-Log L recorded by the LUMIX GH5 / GH5S.

No recording limit, the camera has unlimited buffer memory without any restriction. The camera will record video as long as the memory card / external storage is full.

The prototype of the LUMIX S1H will be exhibited at the “Cine Gear Expo 2019” show from May 30 to June 2, 2019.
