Canon 7D Mark II camera features 20  Megapixel CMOS sensor and Sony A6500 camera feature 24 MP sensor. ISO range of both the camera is same. The camera sensor size of the Sony A6500 is little big compared Canon 7D Mark II. We all know that the Sony A6500 camera does have the same sensor as of A6300 but due to thin copper wiring, enhanced circuit processing, and an enhanced front-end LSI we may see major improvement in image quality of the camera.

Sony A6500 camera features built-in image stabilization system to compensate camera shake upto 5 stops the other big advantage you get that OSS based lenses Image stabilization system will get synchronized with the in Body IS of A6500. No Built-in IS available inside the Canon 7D Mark II camera.

But the most important thing is both the camera is designed on different technological background, the Canon 7D Mark II camera features Dual-pixel CMOS AF sensor whereas the Sony A6500 camera uses Hybrid CMOS AF sensor. With the Hybrid AF system the camera Sony A6500 camera offers 425 Phase AF points and 169 Contrast based AF points. So you get a entire display covered with dense AF that will track and lock AF in no time. Sony A6500 AF system is more advance compared to Canon 7D Mark II.

The continuous shooting speed of the Sony A6500 camera is superior. The A6500 Can shoot 11frames per second @ 24 MP whereas Canon 7D Mark can shoot 10 frames per second @ 20MP. The large buffer inside the Sony A6500 can intake 301+shots of JPEG files in single burst mode and 107 RAW frames.

Sony A6500 captures 4K video mode whereas the Canon 7D Mark II limited to Full HD video mode only. The A6500  2.4x oversampling renders greater detail and full pixel readout is possible and there is no pixel binning. Sony A6500 Full HD 1080p recording can be done @ 120 fps whereas Full HD Video recording of the 7D Mk II camera remains limited to 60fps only.

On the rear side of A6500 we have touch screen that allow user to capture images just tapping. The other major advantage is we can use the display screen as touch-pad to select AF point while we are looking through the viewfinder.

Canon 7D Mark II features twice battery life compared to Sony A6500.

The weight and Size of the Canon is twice as of Sony, So if you prefer light-weight camera or you work continuously for hours than Sony A6500 is best for you.

Sony A6500 vs Canon 7D Mark II – Sensor Test

Sony A500 vs Canon 7D Mark II

From the sensor test conduct by the DXO Mark Lab it’s very clear that despite of having same ISO range on paper the DXO given a better low-light score compared to Canon 7D Mark II.

From the test score we concluded that

  1. The Sony A6500 Showing better portrait color depth
  2. Sony A6500 showing better dynamic range then the 7D Mk II
  3. Low light score of the Sony A6500 is also good when compared to 7D MK II

Now Finally time for some real test – We are comparing High ISO Test images against Each other

Sony A6500 vs Canon 7D Mark II – High ISO Test

Sony A6500 vs Canon 7D Mark II

@ ISO 6400

On the left side we have Sony A6500 and on the right side we have Canon 7D Mark II camera.

Both camera set at ISO 6400 setting and we are surprised to see that Sony A6500 is able to grab bit more details compared to the Canon 7D Mark II camera. The other reason behind the better perofmrance of Sony A6500 is 24 MP sensor whereas the Canon 7D Mark II camera features a 20 MP sensor .

Verdict

Sony A6500 does offer superior specification compared to Canon 7D Mark II camera.  You get more resolution with big bigger sensor, 5-axis image stabilization and Advance Hybrid AF mode. The continuous shooting mode of the A6500 is better as well as you also get touch screen for more convince. We recommend Sony A6500 over Canon 7D Mark II camera.

Sony A6300 vs Fuji X-T2Yes the core specification of the Sony A6500 camera will give a tough competition to Fuji X-T2 without a doubt. The Sony A6500 will cost you less compared to the X-T2.  In the specification comparison review of Sony A6500 vs Fuji X-T2 we have outlined the major difference between, just take a look

Both camera features same resolution sensor and ISO range, but as we know that the Fuji film uses X-Trans technology that eliminates the need of a low-pass filter inside the camera and hence you get 100% details even when the image of the camera is viewed at 100% scale.  The Sony A6500 does have same sensor as of Sony A6300 sensor but Sony have integrated a new LSI chip that enables faster processing of the camera image by reducing noise and maintaining high dynamic range even in low light condition.

Auto-focus System of the Sony A6500 camera is much improved compared to the Fuji X-T2. with Sony A6500 camera you get 425 Phase AF points and 169 contrast based AF points, a total of 594 AF points whereas Fuji X-T2 offers a total of 325 AF points in total.

One of the biggest advantage Sony offering to A6500 users (after advance AF system) is 5-axis image stabilization system. The 5 axis IS system compensate camera shake upto 5-stops (tested by CIPA) and even work more effectively when paired with OSS lenses of E-Mount system. The Fuji X-T2 doesn’t have any in-camera based Image Stabilization system.

The Mechanical shutter speed of Sony A6500 remains limited to 1/4000 whereas the Fuji X-T2 offers mechanical shutter speed of 1/8000 sec. Electronic shutter speed of both the camera is same 1/32000.

Both camera features 4K video recording at 30fps. Sony does a 6K readout to make a 4K video (1.54x oversampling) will give you enormous amount of details in videos. Wheras Fuji X-T2 uses 5K resolution frames to create 4K video that also brings out max details from the sensor. But the biggest problem of Fuji X-T2 camera that it can recorded internally for up to about 10 minutes, If you want to record video of more than 10min video is possible though with the addition of the optional Vertical Power Booster Grip users will be able to record for up to 30 minutes.

Sony A6500 offers touch screen display unit that allow users to touch and shoot, the other biggest advantage you can use the display of the A6500 camera as touch pad for selecting AF points while capturing images via viewfinder.

Noticeable Price difference is also there, Fuji X-T2 cost you $1599 whereas the Sony A6500 will cost you $1399 (Body Only).

Conclusion: We highly recommend you to get Sony A3500 camera over Fuji X-T2 camera. The Sony A6500 features Advance AF system, Built-in 5-axis image stabilization system and big buffer that will grab 301 frames of JPEG in a single burst. The touch display of the camera will also help you to grab hassle free frames.

Sensor: The sensor of both the camera look same, the ISO range and the number of Phase AF points inside the camera is exactly same. Despite of same sensor we expect a better low-light performance from Sony A6500 since the camera features new LSI to boost light-gathering abilities to give clean and clear ouput while shooting at low-light condition, and increase readout speeds to benefit video recording.

Sony introduced 5-axis image stabilization in the Sony A6500 camera that combats with five types of Camera shake. The camera offers you 5-stop of image stabilization as rated by CIPA. And hence combine with OSS lenses you will get added benefit.

Sony increased the Buffer size of the Sony A6500 camera so that you can capture continuous burst of 304 JPEG frames or 107 frames in a single click. Whereas you can see the Sony A6300 camera despite of having same burst rate, it remains limited to 44 frames in JPEG and 21 frames in RAW mode.

While recording a 4K video both camera does a full pixel readout without pixel binning to collect 20 megapixels of information – approximately 2.4×5 (6K equivalent) as many pixels as 4K UHD and then oversamples the information to produce high quality  footage with exceptional detail and depth.  But we have seen the overheating issue of the Sony A6300 camera so we do hope this time Sony A6500 won’t show-up any overheating signs.

Touch-Screen introduce in Sony A6500 camera and now users have to do a single touch to capture a snapshot. Its allows you to for immediate focus point selection.

Use Display as Touch Pad – While you have your eyes on viewfinder you can use the display as touch-pad to select your desired AF smoothly and intuitively.

Both camera offers XGA OLED Tru-Finder with approximately 2.4 million dots that offers exceptional corner-to-corner visibility.

Conclusion: The Sony A6500  is a true flagship camera and it does have a lot of improvements compared to its predecessor Sony A6300. It will cost you more, but you get new camera with more Buffer, LSI integration for faster processing and noise reduction. You also get 5-axis image stabilization system and new multi-function touch display unit. We highly recommend you to get this camera for new users.

sony-a6500-imagePre-order Sony A6500 from B&H Store

We haven’t seen such core specification in any APS-C sensor based mirrorless camera yet, I thing Fuji have to disparately low down its XT2 price to follow up the selling rate after the announcement of A6500.

Lets’ talk about the major core specification of the camera of the camera, the camera features 24.2 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor with 425 Phase AF points paired with 5-axis image stabilization that offers 5 stops of image stabilization as rated by CIPA.

When you will use OSS based E-mount lenses the camera undoubtedly you will get added advantage, however no official statement issued by Sony that how much user will get advantage from Dual IS system.

Sony A6500 back image

The buffer of the camera lot improved compared to predecessor, you can capture 11 frames per second @ 24MP approx 300 JPEGs or 100 Raw+JPEG frames. With the help new LSI processor the camera does a 6K readout to make a 4K video (1.54x oversampling) will give you enormous amount of details in videos.
