Canon M6 Mark III or Canon M7 with External Heat Sink Unit ?

Canon’s Latest Patent shows an external Heat sink unit for dissipation of internal heat. Canon working on an advanced external heat sink for their upcoming APS-C Mirrorless cameras.  As Canon will update the Video performance of the APS-C line-up, sure they will have to manage heat. In a recent patent, we have spotted a Canon EOS M6 style camera attached to an external heat sink unit.

Canon M6 Mark III or Canon M7 or any other model?

We don’t know at the moment which high-end model Canon will select for the introduction of external heat-sink units. But, for sure they are working on High-End Mirrorless camera advanced video core specification, Oversampled 4k or 6k files do generate a lot of heat, and to manage that in smaller bodies they have found a nice hack.

As you can see in the patent drawing vert clearly the design of the Canon external heat sink unit on the right side of the camera. here are some details straight coming out from the patent document

Canon Patent Document Details

Patent Abstract

An electronic device includes an interface unit including a connection portion attachable to an external device by being connected with an interface terminal disposed in the external device, a heat transfer unit, and a heat dissipation unit, wherein the heat transfer unit and the heat dissipation unit are connected with the interface unit, and are in a direction opposite the external device when the interface unit is connected with the external device.

Fron the patent

In Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open. the ventilation duct is formed in an image capturing device, and the ventilation duct is disposed of in such a manner that the ventilation duct passes near the heat generation bodies, such as an image sensor. The heat dissipation device equipped with a heat dissipation fan is attached to the image capturing device. Consequently, an air discharge opening in the image capturing device and an air intake opening of the heat dissipation device are attached to be opposite each other. In the image capturing device discussed in the Japanese Patent Application, the heat dissipation fan is operated to suck outside air from the air intake opening of the image capturing device and discharge the outside air that has passed near the heat generation bodies and has been warmed from the air discharge opening of the heat dissipation device.

Canon 5D Boosted Dynamic Range with Magic Lantern and Much More...

Just wanted to share some good old things and wish, we will get new updates for Canon R5 and R6 too. Canon 5D 2 PDR graph still surprises us when loaded with ML (Magic Lantern ) firmware. With the Dual ISO feature, you are able to get HDR images even at the High ISO range.

Dual ISO is a feature of Magic Lantern that provides an increase in dynamic range using a high dynamic range technique. Alternate lines in the image are at ISO 100 and at the second selected ISO setting. The measured improvement in PDR is lower than what Magic Lantern “claims” but there is a real improvement.

Examples of what dual iso can achieve.

Latest Findings on Canon R5 by Magic Lantern Forum user Levas

Happen to have a R5 here and I noticed something which I haven’t seen mentioned anywhere else around.

When recording in raw(internal 12 bit), selecting the Canon Log3 option does have influence on your raw data.
Side to side comparison in DaVinci Resolve, canon log 3 activated, and canon log settings to off, shows that activating Canon Log 3 means that the camera is actually recording at an ISO value of 3 stops lower.

Please test yourself.
Record something in 8K raw at iso 800 and with canon log 3 activated. (use fixed value for shutter time and aperture)
Now record the same in 8K raw at iso 100 without canon log 3 activated. (with same aperture and shutter speed ofcourse )

Now load both files in DaVinci resolve, go to the raw tab in color mode, and set both to:
Decode quality -> Full res – Canon
Decode using -> clip
Colorspace -> canon cinema gamut
Gamma -> canon log2
iso -> 800 (both files to 800 to match iso 100 recording to iso 800 recording)

Now look at the parade waveform, it’s identical, max highlight data, noise in the shadows etc.

Now when recording in raw, and having canon log 3 activated, the lowest iso you can choose is iso 800, which makes senses, because in the background, it actually records 3 stops lower in iso 100, to save the highlights.
Also, when comparing footage recorded in iso 12800 with log 3, it’s the same as normal non log raw at iso 1600. Same highlights, same shadows, same noise.

So when recording in raw, maybe better to not have canon log settings activated
All of the above applies for internal raw recording.

Canon Still Working on DSLRs? Latest Patent Spotted

Recent patents surfaced over the web that shows Canon R&D still going on DSLRs body?  Well, we all know that Canon is on DSLR cannibalization mode since 2018 and multiple times their rep. told the press that R&D is now halted for DSLRs and now focus is only on Mirrorless.

1. Canon Heat Sink Unit for DSLRs

The recent patent shows Canon is working to improve the Heat Sink of DSLRs, although the patent isn’t new and similar kind of patent we have published back in 2017.

Patent Details

To suppress the deterioration of the image quality of an image output to an external device while reducing the temperature inside a device.SOLUTION: An imaging device includes output means that outputs an image obtained by imaging means to an external device, processing means that can execute the operation by switching first operation in which the processing at the time of shooting the image is reduced as compared with the shooting during the shooting standby, or second operation in which the processing at the time of shooting the image is the same regardless of whether the image is waiting for shooting or during shooting, and control means that allows the processing means to execute the first operation when the output means does not output the image to the external device, and prohibits the processing means from executing the first operation when the output means outputs the image to the external device.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3

2. User Define Silent Mode and AI Silent Mode in DSLRs

Canon is working to reduce the Lens AF and shutter Mechanical sound ( optional electronic shutter ) in Professional DSLR bodies in some specific situations and modes. A dedicated silent mode for photographers and when the camera detects animals in the frame it switches off shutter noise Automatically with the help of AI deep learning programs.

The present invention relates to an image pickup control device such as a digital camera.
When shooting with an imaging control device such as a digital camera, a shutter sound and a lens driving sound are generated. The loudness of the generated sound changes depending on the settings such as the shutter method of the imaging control device, but the setting for suppressing the generation of sound is not always suitable for the shooting situation in terms of the shooting function. Therefore, depending on the situation, the setting that suppresses the generation of sound and the setting that prioritizes the shooting function are switched, but when the situation changes frequently, it takes an operation turn to switch the setting, and there is a shooting opportunity. There was a scene where I missed.
Conventionally, a device has been proposed in which an imaging control device determines that sound generation should be suppressed when a subject such as an animal is mainly detected, and automatically switches to a setting for suppressing sound or light generation
