Press Release:

Canon’s Latest G-series Digital Camera Features a New Type of 1.5-Inch CMOS Sensor, 5x Zoom Lens, Wi-Fi and NFC Capabilities, Full HD and A Three-Inch Touch Tilt LCD Screen

MELVILLE, N.Y., February 11, 2014 – Building upon the success of the PowerShot G1 X digital camera, Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today unveiled its new flagship PowerShot G1 X Mark II, a digital camera designed to meet the evolving needs of today’s professional and advanced amateur photographers.

Boasting a sensor that is 4.5x larger than a 1/1.7” sensor found in professional level point-and-shoot cameras, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera can produce high-quality images with a wide dynamic range. It features a new type of 1.5-inch, 12.8 Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor, made by Canon, allowing for optimum performance with an ISO range of 100-12800. This sensor, combined with the DIGIC 6 Image Processor, comprises the Canon HS SYSTEM resulting in faster autofocusing speeds over the PowerShot G1 X camera, allowing photographers to capture detailed, vivid images even in low-light conditions.

Featuring a newly-developed f/2.0 – f/3.9, 5x optical zoom lens (equivalent 24-120mm zoom range) with Dual Control Rings, this new camera provides customized zooming and focus-functionality similar to a DSLR camera. With this wide of an aperture, photographers have the ability to isolate their subjects by separating them from a background that is blurred.  This gives more control and creative possibilities when using a PowerShot camera. The Dual Control Rings include a Step Ring to adjust various customizable settings and a Continuous Ring to make focusing adjustments during manual focus, as well as additional customizable settings for manual shooting. This new lens features a nine-blade aperture to provide beautiful, blurred backgrounds even at full-zoom range.

“The new high-end PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera delivers incredible, professional-level shooting capabilities in a compact camera body making it the ideal second camera for DSLR shooters,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. “In addition, with the introduction of advanced wireless capabilities such as NFC and enhanced low-light shooting and autofocusing, the G1 X Mark II is a well-rounded professional-level camera that allows photographers to get creative.”

Improved Operation and Performance
The PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera is equipped with a new type of Canon-made, 1.5-inch CMOS sensor to help achieve optimal performance from low to high ISO speeds.  It has a default aspect ratio of 3:2 which is the same ratio the advanced user has come to expect when shooting with a DSLR camera.  If the photographer wants to switch to a 4:3 ratio, it can be done without impacting the field of view.

The new PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera uses 31 Auto Focus (AF) points, compared to the PowerShot G1 X camera that uses nine AF points, resulting in improved autofocus capabilities allowing the user to easily compose the image and focus on a specific subject in the frame. Utilizing the bright, capacitive touch, three-inch tilt LCD on the PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera helps provide flexibility in shooting by tilting 180 degrees up and 45 degrees down.

The PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera is also compatible with Canon’s new optional electronic viewfinder that mounts to the hot shoe. A new optional grip* will also be available for the PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera. These accessories are ideal for photographers looking for the feel of a DSLR camera with the portability of a point-and-shoot camera.

Seamless Connectivity
The PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera is equipped with built-in Wi-Fi® technology, so users can share still images and videos online quickly and easily using compatible mobile devices.1 Using the Mobile Device Connect button, users can connect to a smartphone, a tablet or a Wi-Fi enabled computer. Connection to the computer is easily done using Canon iMAGE GATEWAY2 through the cloud.  For even easier connectivity, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera introduces Near Field Communication (NFC)** – a first for Canon’s G-series cameras – so transferring photos to a compatible Android device can be simple and intuitive. This digital camera’s new remote shooting feature also allows the user to sync the G1 X Mark II with a smartphone or tablet and utilize the shutter, optical zoom and self-timer features from that device.

Extensive Shooting Modes
Ideal for portrait photography, the camera’s Background Defocus mode softens the background behind a subject to help users create professional-looking portraits. In addition, simply pressing the camera’s dedicated movie button allows photographers to capture 1080p Full HD video with ease. And, as commonly found in most DSLR cameras, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera has a full range of shooting and recording modes, including 14-bit RAW + JPEG, for outstanding creative control.

Unique to Canon PowerShot Digital Cameras, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera features Advanced Star Mode with four options to capture images of starry night skies with impeccable quality.  The “Star Portrait” and “Star Nightscape” modes help capture the radiance of stars while still allowing you to capture the subject. The “Star Trails” mode captures video trails of stars to turn trails into a luminous still image, while the “Star Time Lapse Movie” mode will shoot images of star movement and then combine the images to make a film that shows the movement of the stars, creating a truly stunning video.

Availability
The PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera will be available starting in April for a retail price of $799.99.

P340 Primary Features

  1. Nikon optical technologies for superior rendering performance

A fast NIKKOR lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.8, an effective pixel count of 12.2-million pixels, and a large, 1/1.7-in. backside illumination CMOS sensor
The P340 is equipped with a NIKKOR lens that represents the accumulation of Nikon optical technologies and offers a fast maximum aperture of f/1.8. The camera is also equipped with a large, 1/1.7-inch backside illumination CMOS sensor, and is able to more effectively acquire light with an effective pixel count of 12.2-million pixels. The combination of fast lens and large CMOS sensor achieves superior resolution with excellent texture, definition, and a more three-dimensional feel.

5x optical zoom covering the wide-angle 24mm to telephoto 120mm angles of view
The P340 is equipped with a 5x optical zoom NIKKOR lens that covers a broad range of angles of view, from the wide-angle 24mm to the telephoto 120mm (equivalent focal lengths in 35mm [135] format). The lens also offers powerful support for macro photography with shooting as close as 2 cm to the lens. A seven-blade iris diaphragm makes capturing photos in which backgrounds are beautifully blurred possible. In addition, it is equipped with Dynamic Fine Zoom, which enables 10x* zoom with which resolution is preserved in the digital zoom range.

    • *At the maximum image size.

Compact body with adoption of high refractive index lens and aspherical lens elements
Adoption of high refractive index lens element(s) and aspherical lens elements enables a slimmer lens barrel for a more compact camera body. This high level of performance makes for consistently sharp rendering from the center of the frame to frame edges.

Built-in ND filter that supports shooting in bright surroundings
When the built-in neutral density (ND) filter is enabled, the amount of light that passes through the lens can be reduced to a degree equivalent to a three-stop reduction in shutter speed. This allows users to emphasize subject movement with slower shutter speeds, even in bright places or situations.

  1. Advanced operation with adoption of a multi-functional control ring

Users can easily assign a function to the control ring adopted around the lens barrel and use the control ring to adjust that function’s setting (in P, S, A, M, U and Auto shooting modes only). It can also be used to fine-tune effects applied in scene modes and Special Effects mode. The P340 also offers a command dial and rotary multi selector that can be used for independent control over primary shooting settings such as ISO sensitivity, shutter speed, and aperture setting. The Fn (function) button, to which a frequently used function can be assigned, and movie-record button, which enables movie recording at the touch of a button, also help to make P340 operation smoother and more natural.

  1. A high-performance lens-shift vibration reduction (VR) function with Active mode for advanced compensation for camera shake

Photos captured with high-power zoom applied are often blurred by camera shake. The P340, however, is equipped with a high-performance lens-shift vibration reduction (VR) function that offers camera shake compensation equivalent to a shutter speed 3.5-stops* faster, enabling worry-free shooting even with super-telephoto photography. In addition, Active mode effectively reduces the effects of greater camera shake and makes framing images easier for sharp, clear still images and movies, whether photographing landscapes from a moving vehicle or recording movies while walking.

    • *Measured at the maximum telephoto position.
  1. A variety of shooting functions that support imaging as intended

M Exposure Preview
As the view through the lens displayed in the monitor simulates exposure at current settings, users can preview resulting images with greater accuracy.

AF Area Mode
The size of the focus area can be selected from Normal, Wide, and Spot. The ability to specify the size of the focus area makes for more flexible fine-tuning of focus in accordance with the size and position of the intended subject.

The cameras also offer four exposure modes—P, A, S, and M—that make mastering manual camera operations more fun, as well as COOLPIX Picture Control, which enables adjustment of imaging characteristics such as vividness and sharpening prior to shooting in accordance with the subject, shooting conditions, or photographic intent, Special Effects mode, which allows users to enjoy applying effects, such as those concerning color and contrast, to still images and movies before they are recorded, and Filter Effects that can be applied to still images already recorded.

  1. Built-in Wi-Fi® that makes connecting with others enjoyable with simple connection to smart devices

The built-in Wi-Fi® function can be used to transfer photos* to a smart device over a wireless connection as soon as they are taken. Photos taken with this digital camera can be easily shared with family and friends, or uploaded to blogs or social networking service (SNS) sites. In addition, the display on a smartphone, tablet, or other smart device can be used to frame images and control shooting remotely. This is very convenient when taking group photos and the like in which the user is included. With remote shooting, the self-timer, zoom, and shooting information are also displayed on the smart device screen.

    • * The Wireless Mobile Utility app must first be installed on the smart device (the app can be downloaded free of charge from the smart device’s app store), and Wi-Fi® connection settings must be applied before image transfer is possible.
  1. Function for recording 1920×1080/50i/60i movies

High-quality and smooth 50i/60i movies with stereo sound can easily be recorded by simply pressing the camera’s movie-record button. What’s more, the P340 offers a movie pause function, with which recording of a single movie file can be paused and then restarted (within 5 minutes), as well as the ability to save movie frames as still images while movies are being recorded. As movie frames can also be saved as still images and unwanted portions of movies can be eliminated with movie playback, users can save only the desired portion of movies for recording and editing of movies as intended.

  1. Faster AF for quick and nimble response

Autofocusing is initiated faster than with previous cameras, and has also been optimized for faster focusing and a shorter shooting time lag. Smooth focusing ensures stress-free shooting with certain capture of photo opportunities.

Other P340 Features

  • A 3-inch, approximately 921k-dot TFT LCD monitor for which the bright, power-saving RGBW system has been adopted
  • Target Finding AF, with which the user need simply point the camera at the intended subject and the camera automatically predicts, and focuses on, the intended subject
  • Scene Auto Selector mode, with which the camera automatically identifies shooting conditions and applies the optimum scene mode
  • A Zoom Memory function that enables simple switching in steps between preset focal lengths with zooming
  • A Startup Zoom Position setting that automatically shifts zoom to a preset focal length when the camera is turned on
  • Active D-Lighting, which prevents loss of detail in highlights and shadows for images exhibiting brightness similar to that seen with the naked eye when shooting scenes with extremes in both light and dark
  • High-speed battery charging (when the EH-71P/EH-71PCH and USB Cable UC-E21 are used)
