Canon G12 Review

Main points of review

  • Features and Design
  • Images Quality
  • Conclusion

Design and ease of use

Canon G12 is build for serious photographers, the ISO and  exposure compensation jog dial  above the camera really help DSLR users to adjust the shot setting quickly and easily. Additional dial in front of the camera helps you to select Aperture in Aperture Priority mode and Select Shutter Speed in Shutter Priority mode.

Canon G12 feel solid and heavy, not slim as a compact camera and the G12 won’t fit into a trouser or shirt pocket.

The vari angle Display is fantastic, It  allows you to take pictures in any position and situation.

Image Quality and Sample Images

G12 offer Hybrid IS employs both an angular sensor and an accelerometer, enabling it to suppress both the blur caused by the angle of the camera and the “shift blur” that happens when your subject moves parallel to the camera, a problem that is especially noticeable at large zoom factors.

G12 offers automatic and scene-specific shooting options that should appeal to a broad range of users, both experienced or not. With new formats and sizes you can take pictures, 10:9, 4:3, 1:1, 3:2, 4:5 allows to get a better composition without croping the image. Focusing speed is too quick and more faster than G11,  The lens is magnificently sharp and gives same result as L-lenses of canon DSLRs.

In SCN mode yo can take HDR effected pictures. High Dynamic Range scene mode combines multiple shots into one picture but you should use a tripod while shooting HDR images.

Excellent performance in Low light,  2.5-megapixel setting ISOs range from 320 to 12,800; it’s 80 to 3200 in all other modes, 2.5 MP sounds too small but looks good in 8×10 print paper, respectably bright apertures of f/2.8 and f/4.5 at either end of the zoom range gives clear and usable images at night.

HD Movie mode: G12 features 720p HD movie shooting (24fps) with stereo sound, no optical zoom available during video recording.

Canon G12 Sample Images

Good: Excellent performance in Low light, manual controls, articulated LCD, built-in neutral-density filter and In-Camera HDR

Bad: Too bulky to fit in pants pockets.

Conclusion Canon Powershot G12 is an excellent compact camera which offers full manual control like a DSLR, Highly Recommended. Buy Canon G12 at Amazon

PENTAX OPTIO S1 FACT SHEET
Three Stylish Colors
The PENTAX Optio S1 aluminum alloy housing is available in three high-quality finishes including a mirror-finish Chrome, or a high gloss Black or Green. Each model features a color coordinated lens barrel and translucent control buttons, as well as laser-engraved logos and feature descriptions on the front panel. The meticulous design detail of the Optio S1 makes it a digital camera that doubles as a fashion accessory.

Versatile 5X optical zoom lens with 28mm wide-angle coverage
The ultra-compact Optio S1 features an 5X optical zoom lens covering focal lengths from 5mm to 25mm (equivalent in the 35mm format to approximately 28mm wide angle to 140mm telephoto) that may be used for a wide variety of subjects and scenes including landscapes, architecture, group portraits in confined spaces, and tightly cropped snapshots taken from a distance. An Intelligent Zoom function allows even tighter zooming in on the subject, extending the digital zoom range up to 33.5X with no loss of image fidelity.

Exceptional image quality
With exceptional image resolution of 14 effective megapixels and an advanced imaging engine with a high-performance PENTAX zoom lens and a mechanical Shake Reduction (SR) system, the Optio S1 delivers brilliant, high-quality images with well-defined details even when enlarged to poster size.

Triple Shake Reduction (SR) image stabilization technology to prevent image blur
Sensor-shift SR
The Optio S1 offers and advanced sensor-shift SR mechanism for sharp, blur-free images even when shooting telephoto shots, sunsets or indoor scenes in incident light. The camera compensates for camera shake up to approximately three shutter steps.
High-Sensitivity Digital SR*
The Optio S1 automatically raises the sensitivity as high as ISO 6400 for higher shutter speeds to minimize the adverse effects of camera shake and subject movement when shooting still images in low-light conditions.
* When the High-Sensitivity anti-shake mode is selected, the recorded size is fixed to 5M (2592 x 1944 pixels).
Movie SR*
During movie recording, the Optio S1 can prevent blurry images and annoying camera shake by using Movie Shake Reduction.
* When the Movie SR mode is selected, the angle of view becomes narrower than normal shooting.

High-quality, widescreen HD movie recording with dedicated REC button
The Optio S1 captures detailed movie clips at 16:9 high-definition TV resolution (1280 x 720 pixels)* at a frame rate of approximately 30 frames per second. A new, dedicated Movie REC button positioned on the back panel initiates movie recording from any shooting mode without delay.
* When the Optio S1’s AV output terminal is used, movie clips are output at standard definition. If the user wishes to play back movie clips in high definition (1280 x 720 pixels), the data must be transferred to a personal computer for playback.

Advanced, user-friendly Auto Picture mode for hands-off selection of the best shooting mode
The Optio S1 features the PENTAX-original Auto Picture mode that automatically selects the most appropriate shooting mode for a given subject or scene by accurately and instantly accessing all photographic conditions affecting the subject or scene. This set-it-and-forget-it mode detects 14 different subjects and scene types including people, landscape, blue sky, sunset, and more. The mode instantly optimizes all camera settings such as sensitivity and shutter speed for the quality images for the type of subject and scene identified.

Upgraded face detection for greater convenience
A new-generation Face Detection AF & AE function instantly and accurately detects the subject’s face in the image field and a Natural Skin mode reproduces natural, healthy skin texture.

Creative digital filters and tools
The Optio S1 offers nine digital filters, including Toy Camera and Retro, to add various creative visual effects to recorded images without a computer. A new Miniature filter converts any scene into an image full of miniatures, and an HDR filter (first ever on a PENTAX compact) produces images with outstanding exposure detail in wide exposure situations.

Additional features
• Wireless remote shooting using an optional PENTAX infrared remote control
• Large 2.7-inch color LCD monitor with approximately 230,000 dots for easy viewing of images and menus
• In body recharge system for simple and convenient, cellphone-like battery recharging
• Compatibility with SDXC memory cards for recording of high-quality images over extended hours*

• Image viewing, editing and filing software included: ArcSoft MediaImpression 3.0 for PENTAX (Windows version) and MediaImpression 2.1 for PENTAX (Macintosh version)
*UHS-speed-class data transmission not available.

Canon celebrates 60 million EF lens production milestone

TOKYO, February 7, 2011—Canon Inc. and Canon Marketing Japan Inc. announced today the achievement of a new EF lens-manufacturing milestone with the production of the company’s 60-millionth lens in January 2011: an EF70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM.

Production of interchangeable EF lenses for Canon EOS-series AF (autofocus) single-lens reflex film cameras began in 1987 at the company’s Utsunomiya Plant, and has since expanded to a total of four production centers including Canon Inc., Taiwan; Canon Opto (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.; and Oita Canon Inc. in Japan. EF lenses reached the 10-million-unit milestone after approximately eight and a half years in production, followed by the 40-million-mark in April 2008 and, owing to the rapid spread of the EOS Digital series, production then increased 10 million units to reach the 50-million mark in December 2009. Canon celebrated 60-million lenses produced in January 2011—an increase of 10 million units after only a short one year and one month period.

First introduced in March 1987, along with Canon’s EOS SLR camera system, the EF lens has over the years led the industry through the incorporation of a number of innovative technologies, including such world’s firsts*1 as the Ultrasonic Motor-powered lens (USM), Image Stabilizer (IS) that compensates for the effects of camera shake, Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC) anti-reflection technology, and a multi-layered diffractive optical element. Last year, Canon announced the introduction of the world’s first*1 true fisheye zoom lens with angle-of-view coverage from 180-degree circular fisheye to 180-degree diagonal fisheye: the EF8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM. The model is slated for release in March 2011.

Canon’s current EF lens lineup, comprising 65 models,*2 ranges from super-wide-angle lenses to super-telephoto zoom lenses. The company’s diverse lens selection offers several features, including a number of zoom options ranging from standard to super-telephoto, Image Stabilizer-equipped lenses, large-diameter lenses, macro-lenses and TS-E lenses incorporating a special tilt-shift mechanism allowing manipulation of image perspective and distortion.

Canon will continue to refine its optical technologies, striving to produce exceptional lenses that cater to the varying needs of photographers—from first-time users to advanced amateurs and professionals—while contributing to expanding the photographic possibilities for SLR cameras.
