NASA uses Canon?

Yes, we have seen the outer space images captured by Nikon camera, we have also seen how Nikon and NASA attached to each other in every space mission,

On several occasions NASA has published pictures of Nikon cameras covered in special white housing. Few days ago POP PHOTO Contacted NASA and got some more details: “The equipment under the thermal blanket is a Nikon SB-800 flash in a custom housing that is used during a spacewalk (EVA). The flash needed a special housing because it will not work properly in the vacuum of space. The housing holds air pressure so that the flash will function properly. There is also a bracket on the bottom (covered with a white thermal blanket) that the camera and flash mount to. ”

But this is not a self-portrait, The EXIF information says the images was taken from a 5D Mark II camera, may be NASA uses Nikon on Space and Canon on Land ? 🙂

No 5D Mark III in 2011?

Few days ago a Canon rep in Australia says “there will not be a 5D3 in 2011” [NR]

According to canon rumors [CR2] 5D Mark III is not yet a finalized product and there are still 2 decisions to be made before the product is ready for consumption.

  • Split the 5D line into a still camera and an advanced video feature camera.
  • A camera between the 5D Mark III and 1D

So, still the decision is pending about the 5D line split-up and the expected arrival date of new 5D is February 2012

Recommended Canon Lenses for Portrait Photography

Recommended portrait lenses for photography, for beginners I will recommend canon 50mm f/1.8 lens, for semi-pro and professional photographers 50mm f/1.4 and f/1.2L lens is highly recommended.
Traditionally, photographers have relied upon moderate telephotos for portraits, lenses such as the 85mm f/1.8 USM, the 85mm lenses allow you to back off a little bit from your subject, and still produce frame-filling shots while minimizing the amount of background distractions.
Zoom lenses such as 17-55mm f/2.8 is ideal for portrait and wedding photography for APS-C DSLRs (T3 / 1100D , T3i / 600D, 60D and 7D). Professional L-series Lenses such as 24-70mm and 70-200mm zooms, are versatile choices that allow you to back off and also tend to throw backgrounds out of focus, highly recommended for Full frame DSLRs like 5D series and 1Ds series.

CCD vs CMOS Sensor

CCD vs CMOS sensor is a big issue, What wikipedia and Howstuff Work says about CCD vs CMOS Sensor, Read the summary given below

CCD sensors create high-quality image with low-noise. CMOS sensors, traditionally, are more susceptible to noise. CCD have better light sensitivity compared to CMOS, CMOS traditionally consumes less power.

The main difference in CCD and CMOS

  • CCD sensors typically produce less NOISE
  • CCD sensors typically are more light-sensitive;
  • CMOS sensors use far less power (up to 100 times less);
  • CMOS sensors cost less to produce.

Mode of Operation / Working Principle

A CCD image sensor is an analog device. In a CCD sensor, When light strikes the chip every pixel’s charge is transferred through a very limited number of output nodes (often just one) to be converted to voltage, buffered, and sent off-chip as an analog signal. All of the pixel can be devoted to light capture, and the output’s uniformity is high, as a result the overall image quality is high.

In a CMOS sensor, each pixel has its own charge-to-voltage conversion, and the sensor often also includes amplifiers, noise-correction, and digitization circuits, so that the chip outputs digital bits. These other functions increase the design complexity and reduce the area available for light capture. With each pixel doing its own conversion, uniformity is lower. But the chip can be built to require less off-chip circuitry for basic operation.

CCD  vs. CMOS in DxOMark Lab

Lecia M9 is a well Known (only)fullfarme camera uses 18 Mpix CCD sensor, It is important to note that Leica is the only brand that still makes cameras with CCD sensors; all other main full-frame cameras have CMOS sensors., DxOMark lab tested the M9  ccd sensor and compared with other CMOS sensor Camera and the result was quite amazing.

Lecia M9 ccd vs Canon 5D CMOS

The Leica M9 provides good image quality for low ISO, but its results for high ISO are weak, with dynamic range decreasing very fast. The Leica M9 achieves the lowest score among measured full-frame sensors.

Lecia M9 vs other Full-frame Sensor Camera

Lecia M9 scores the almost at the last position (just above the old Canon 1Ds) in Full-frame sensor comparison. (see full comparison at DxoMark Lab)

Conclusion: CMOS is a clear winner – There was a time when CCD was the better choice for image quality but the recent development in technology resulted a new and better CMOS sensors with better light sensitivity, image quality, less noise, low power consumption and less cost compared to a traditional CCD sensor.

Firmware Update - EOS-1D Mark IV and EOS 5D Mark II

Canon updates EOS-1D Mark IV and EOS 5D Mark II firmware with minor improvements,

EOS-1D Mark IV Changes
This firmware update (Version 1.1.0) incorporates the following improvements and fixes.

  1. Improves the writing/reading speeds when using UDMA 7-compatible CF cards.
  2. Fixes a phenomenon that occurs when using high-capacity (32 GB or greater) CF cards: If either a CF card with only a little available space remaining or the battery is removed and then reinserted into the camera, and then the user attempts to start shooting movies immediately, shooting may stop.
  3. Corrects some mistakes in the menu screens displayed in Arabic and Portuguese.

EOS 5D Mark II Changes
This firmware update (Version 2.0.9) incorporates the following improvements and fixes.

  1. Improves the writing/reading speeds when using UDMA 7-compatible CF cards.
  2. Fixes a phenomenon that occurs when custom function C.Fn III-2 is set to [5: IS start] to assign IS start to the AF stop button on the lens: When used with lenses that do not have an AF stop button, the IS function will not work.
  3. Corrects some mistakes in the menu screens displayed in Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, and Thai.
