Curved sensor based High-End camera rumor is not new, We have published the Sony curved sensor patent on July 6th, 2014, we have also published the sample image captured by curved sensor camera [see here].
Based on latest rumors floating over the web, Sony already started the massive production of curved fullframe sensors, the sources of the rumormill claim that the production units are capable to produce 1200 units/per month. That’s a clear sign that Sony is now prearing to announce next flagship A7 series camera.
The best part of curved sensor is that they mimic human eye, in the curved sensor light directly falls in the center of the sensor and hits the pixel in straight, that completely eliminates the need micro-lenses above the sensor surface. Curved sensors are 1,4 times more sensitive in the center and 2 times more sensitive in the corners. They live among us, yes its absolutely true, Sony already implemented the curved sensor

I think that Sony is able to kill all competition if you just look at electronics and overall specs, features. But when it comes to developing a camera that really feels like a camera should feel for hard-core photographer there’s something missing for me. Also, what I can’t forget, I’ve been living with Sony’s pro-video stuff in the past and despite the pricing they were behaving in the same way like dealing with cheap consumables – also repairs were in my country a clear disaster after only 1-2 years of use. I don’t know – I’ll stick to Nikon & Fujifilm as long as I don’t see the real use of an ‘exotic’ development like this – after many years of excellent aspherical glass – I’m not really having the feeling I’m missing in my photography that extra kind of sharpness, not even in the corners – it even looks a challenge to me to pair this kind of sensor with all possible focal lengths.
1.4 times increased sensitivity in the center?
That sounds great but I am not sure how this is possible – the center is essentially flat.
Or comes this sensitivity from the Back side illumination that is already present.
It would be nice to see this kind of improvement – especially since it should make smaller lenses possible.
Just day dreaming here but how about a RX100 Sized camera with a APS size sensor, or 1 inch bend sensor and 10x zoom.
