According to the Map Camera rankings (THE MAP TIMES) and their December report, the Sony A7 V camera is dominating the sales ranking, which has been recently announced, not only the Sony A7 V. There are also some surprises present in their ranking table, so let’s dive into the details and explore the top-selling models of December 2025 by the Map Camera ranking.
December 2025 New Digital Camera Sales Rankings at Map Camera
So the top-selling models in the table below are obviously full of surprises. Just after the Sony A7 V, we have 4 different models from Fujifilm itself, which cover almost the entire ranking table. And after Fuji, we have the OM-3, and it is really a big surprise in the top six. We don’t have the major camera giants like Canon, Nikon, and Sony in just the sixth position. We have Nikon Z5 II after that, followed by Ricoh, and then finally again, it is a big surprise to see Canon at the last 11th position, not even under the top 10 in the December 2025 ranking. So the taste for the best cameras in the Asian region, specifically in Japan, is quite a bit different from the United States of America.
Here’s a breakdown of the top performers based on Map Camera’s data:
| Rank | Camera Model | Brand | Key Notes |
| 1 | Sony α7V | Sony | Debuted with massive pre-orders; outsold ranks 2-5 combined; ample supply met demand. |
| 2 | Fujifilm X-T30 III | Fujifilm | Strong comeback amid previous supply shortages. |
| 3 | Fujifilm X-M5 | Fujifilm | Part of Fujifilm’s dominant mid-tier presence. |
| 4 | Fujifilm X-E5 | Fujifilm | Continued popularity in the compact APS-C segment. |
| 5 | Fujifilm X-T5 | Fujifilm | Solid performer, rounding out Fujifilm’s top-five sweep below Sony. |
| 6 | OM SYSTEM OM-3 | OM System (Olympus) | First ranking appearance since March 2025; nostalgic appeal. |
| 7 | Nikon Z5 II | Nikon | Dropped from 5th last month; steady mid-pack contender. |
| 8 | Ricoh GR IV | Ricoh | Lost some momentum due to reduced supply; still highly regarded. |
| 9 | Sony α7C II | Sony | Compact full-frame option holding steady. |
| 10 | Ricoh GR IIIx | Ricoh | Companion to GR IV; popularity unchanged despite supply dip. |
| 11 | Canon EOS R6 Mark III | Canon | Dropped from 1st last month; no stock issues, but release-month surge faded. |
This ranking highlights Sony’s aggressive push with the α7V, which not only secured the top spot but did so by a “large margin,” as noted in the report. Fujifilm’s resurgence is equally noteworthy, claiming spots #4 top spot

Why the Sony α7V Took First Place by a Landslide
The big question is why Sony’s A7 V camera is creating a landslide victory in the ranking table, specifically in December 2025. The reason behind that is the massive upgrade that we have seen inside the camera. The partially stacked sensor with better dynamic range specifically touches the core of photographers, and even for hybrid shooters who love to have high-quality 4K recording options, they are getting everything inside a single camera.
More or less, the hybrid Sony A7 V is dominating the entry-level and mid-range full-frame camera market, particularly in the Asian region, due to its significant upgrade in core specifications. Other than that, if we talk a bit technically, then the things that really impressed me inside the Sony A7 V are
- 33MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor (partially stacked for faster readout),
- BIONZ XR2 processor, and
- AI-driven autofocus is a hybrid beast for both photos and video.
- 4K 60p uncropped recording in 10-bit 4:2:2,
- up to 30fps bursts, and 8-stop IBIS, perfect for creators and pros. Priced around $2,999 at launch, it hit the sweet spot for value, especially with pre-orders flooding in.
Compared to its predecessor, the α7 IV, the α7V offers 50% faster bursts and improved video stability, making it a worthy upgrade. For those eyeing lenses, check out our guide to the best lenses for Sony α7V in 2026 to maximize its potential.
Fujifilm’s Strong Showing: A Comeback Story
Fujifilm dominated the runner-up positions, signaling a recovery from prolonged shortages. The X-T30 III (2nd) boasts a 26.1MP X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor and X-Processor 5, ideal for enthusiasts seeking retro controls at an affordable $999 body-only price. Read our full Fujifilm X-T30 III press release and specs breakdown for more details.
The X-M5 (3rd) shines as a vlogging powerhouse with 4K 60fps, 7-stop IBIS, and a vari-angle touchscreen—all in a weather-sealed 355g body. Compare it head-to-head in our Fuji X-M5 vs Sony A6700 analysis.
While Fujifilm lost the top spot to Sony’s newcomer, their consistent strength at Map Camera underscores brand loyalty in the APS-C space.
Other Notable Performers and Surprises
- OM SYSTEM OM-3 (6th): This retro-inspired Micro Four Thirds camera marks a return to the rankings, featuring a 20MP sensor, metal body, and video-friendly color profiles. Priced at $1,999, it’s aimed at street photographers. See how it stacks up in our Olympus OM-1 Mark II vs OM-3 comparison.
- Nikon Z5 II (7th): A budget full-frame option with a 24.5MP BSI sensor and Expeed 7 processor, it offers 4K 30p video and dual UHS-II slots. It’s dropped slightly but remains competitive. For a deeper dive, explore our Nikon Z5 II vs Sony A7 IV matchup.
- Ricoh GR IV (8th): Known for its pocketable design and 26MP APS-C sensor, supply constraints hurt its momentum. Still, it’s a favorite for street photography. Check our Ricoh GR IV pre-order guide if you’re considering one.
- Canon EOS R6 Mark III (11th): A disappointment after debuting at #1 last month. With a 32.5MP BSI sensor and 6K RAW video, stock isn’t an issue—perhaps the initial hype has cooled. Our Sony A7 V vs Canon R6 III comparison highlights the rivalry.
Canon’s absence from the top 10 is concerning, especially with no shortages reported. It raises questions about their momentum against Sony and Fujifilm.
What This Means for the Camera Market in 2026
Sony ruling at the number one position and Canon EOS R6 Mark III at the 11th position clearly state that users or consumers are no longer brand-specific. They are looking for the best specifications available in any camera brand. If a camera offers strong features at a reasonable price range, they are going to buy it.
In a very similar manner, you can see no Nikon Z6 Mark III present in the list, although the Nikon Z6 III is available at a reasonable price.
Well, I was watching Chris Niccolls and Jordan Drake interview on the PetaPixel YouTube channel, and I think Jordan Drake was very clear about the Nikon Z6 Mark III—that if Nikon wants to survive the competition in 2026, they need to release a Nikon Z6 Mark IIIs model, which is more focused on sensitivity and dedicated dynamic range control over the recently announced partially stacked CMOS sensor.
So they need to refresh the model, since the Sony A7 V camera’s partially stacked sensor does have extensive control over dynamic range with the help of dual-gain (DGO-like) technology, which works very effectively while capturing stills.
So let’s hope we are going to see some great announcements in 2026 ahead. But for sure, Sony A7 V is leading the Japanese camera market ranking for the month of December 2025. What’s your take on these rankings? Let me know your thoughts in the comment box below.
The α7 V’s landslide victory suggests Sony’s focus on supply chain efficiency and hybrid features is paying off, potentially setting the tone for 2026. Fujifilm’s mid-pack dominance shows APS-C remains vibrant, while brands like Ricoh and OM System appeal to niche audiences. If this trend holds, expect more emphasis on AI autofocus, video capabilities, and quick availability.
Stay tuned for January’s rankings to see if Sony maintains its lead.
