Difference between fake / counterfeit and a genuine lens
Take a look at the side by side image of a original and a counterfeit lens. The “CANON” and “INC” have space in-between and the fake lens doesn’t have any gap between CANONINC. Now it has become easy for you to differentiate between a fake and a real lens.

If you purchase the lens (or any Canon products) through an authorized Canon retailer, you wouldn’t have to worry if you are buying counterfeit. The worry would be EBay and retailers who have questionable practices.
Agree with Cindy, you have to be alert only when you are buying a Lens from a non-Authorized Canon dealers.
