Sony Chip Shortage issue isn't Ending Anytime Soon - April 2022

The latest news coming from Japan, according to the dclife.jp website Kitamura (one of the largest chains of camera stores) suspended the sales of the sony APS-C range of cameras and also stopped taking pre-orders.

Orders for Sony “α6600”, “α6400”, and “VLOGCAM ZV-E10” have been suspended due to delays in parts procurement due to the effects of global semiconductor shortages. You can also check the notation “Cannot purchase”.

We have to understand the chip shortage is not only for the APS-C lineup of cameras, Sony is using all its available resources to keep up the supply of full-frame cameras.

TNC Take – So, what we are discussing here, is the impact that is visible to our eyes. Let’s discuss the un-seen impact of the chip-shortage aka semiconductor shortage

1. Upcoming APS-C Mirrorless Announcements Delayed

Sony will not repeat the mistakes again as they did in the past, they have under-estimated the chip shortage issue. Now, as usual until and unless the issue gets resolved we won’t see any new APS-C Mirrorless camera announcement from Sony.

Why is Sony only Facing such a huge impact, whereas Canon M50 Mark II & Nikon Z50 is in stock right now? So, possibly there are two strong reasons

1. Canon and Nikon are able to manage the situation better than Sony OR

2. Due to very high demand and popularity Sony is not able to cope with the market.

The second point looks more logical to me since Sony announced Sony ZV-E10 and Sony A7 IV just prior to the chip shortage issue, and undoubtedly both of the cameras features class-leading core specification at their price range. Sony is more trouble than other camera makers is only due to the high demand.

2. Semiconductors Shortage affecting the camera industry

Why the hell semi-conductors will affect the camera industry in any way?  But, I am from an engineering background and  I can assure you that nowadays semiconductors are being used in each and every device which can process data in any form.

3. The reason behind the Shortage of Chips in 2022 aka semiconductor

After doing a little research I came to know there are three basic factors responsible for the global chip shortage

  1. The COVID Backlog
  2. Expansion vs Demand (Semi-conductor manufacturing units expansion not happing as per the demand of the market)
  3. Crypto Currencies Miners raised the demand for semiconductor to the next level.

4. When will the Global chip shortage get resolved?

2022 will remain the way it is. But from 2023 we may see some sunshine. Intel helping our European Union to set up a semiconductor manufacturing unit there, TSMC (renowned chip maker) said it will invest $2.87 billion to expand production capacity in China. Many efforts have been taken worldwide in a big and small ways to resolve the chip shortage issue asap. So, the issue will get resolved but not very soon.

Sony A7C Mark II Latest Rumors

Sony A7C is actually a compact A7 III camera made for Vloggers, with fewer physical controls and a compact design we are almost getting the same core specification in both of these cameras.

According to the latest rumors that surfaced over the web, the Sony A7C Mark II announcement is scheduled for Sep /Oct 2022. Earlier info suggests the camera sensor remains the same as 24MP, new improved image processor with a 10bit recording option and a new menu interface. It looks like Sony doesn’t want to mess up with the sales of the existing Sony A7 IV camera by realising an A7C Mark II with almost similar core specifications.

UPDATE: The Sony A7C Mark II is rumored to feature 33MP Sensor of A74 camera expected to arrive in Q3/Q4 of 2023

Sony New 16-35mm Power Zoom Lens, Will You buy it ?

Sony New 16-35mm Power Zoom Lens announced $1198. The lens is a compact zoom lens and features a constant F4 aperture throughout the zoom range. A nice addition to the Power zoom series. A usable lens to those who work with gimbals and need ultrawide coverage all the time.

Sony 16-35mm Lens is available for pre-order at B&H Store

TNC take: Yes it’s an amazing lens, but I in the same price range I will prefer Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens, which will cover more wider  14mm range and features a constant F2.8 aperture instead of F4 like the PZ Lens.

Sony New 16-35mm Power Zoom Lens Press Release

Sony Electronics Announces the World’s Lightest Constant F4 Wide-Angle Power Zoom Lens, the Compact FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G™

Latest Addition to Sony’s E-mount Lens Line-Up Offers Evolved Image Quality and Operability for Full-Frame, Content Creation

SAN DIEGO, CA – March 22, 2022 – Sony Electronics Inc. today introduced the FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G (model SELP1635G) – a wide-angle power zoom with evolved image quality, high performance AF (autofocus), and superior operability designed to meet the needs of today’s creators.

Developed with Sony’s vast expertise in lens design, the FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G delivers outstanding performance and control in the world’s lightest[i] full-frame wide-angle power-zoom lens with a constant F4 aperture. The compact hybrid lens offers refined image quality, reliable G lens rendering, and industry-leading AF performance in a remarkably compact form factor that will appeal to both photo and video content creators. The FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G is ideal for everything from video production and vlogging to street and landscape photography, offering a variety of outstanding hybrid features such as incredible resolution, beautiful bokeh, and fast and precise AF. In addition, Sony’s newest lens offers advanced video features including an innovative power zoom function and refined capabilities such as an independent aperture control ring for even more creative control.

“The needs of our community are our top priority. As the content creation landscape continues to evolve and the worlds of still imaging and video continue to merge, we are constantly developing new products to meet this growing demand for hybrid content creators,” said Yang Cheng, Vice President, Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc. “With an advanced feature set and unmatched portability and flexibility, The FE PZ 16-35MM F4 G is perfectly designed to meet these evolving needs and ensure that today’s creators can realize their full vision.”

Evolved Image Quality for Photos and Videos

The FE PZ 16-35MM F4 G offers an extraordinary blend of breathtaking resolution and beautiful bokeh in a lightweight, compact lens. The optical path includes two AA (advanced aspherical) elements and a conventional aspherical element for an accurate image across the frame and 16-35mm zoom range. One Super ED (extra-low dispersion), and one ED glass element control chromatic aberration, while one ED aspherical element controls both chromatic and spherical aberration.

The use of AA elements in an advanced optical design also ensures excellent close-up performance throughout the zoom range – minimum focusing distance is 11 inches (0.28 meters) at 16mm and 9.5 inches (0.24 meters) at 35mm, with a maximum magnification of 0.23x. Additionally, an optimized coating effectively suppresses flare and ghosting for clear, well-defined images.

A circular aperture and carefully designed control of spherical aberration work together to deliver smooth, deep full-frame bokeh that adds visual impact.

High-Performance Autofocus

The FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G utilizes two XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear motors to control autofocus. The fast response and smooth, quiet operation of this system gives users new creative freedom. With Sony’s flagship Alpha 1 body it is possible to maintain accurate focus while shooting stills continuously at up to 30fps (frames per second)[ii] and up to 120fps in movie mode.

Focus is especially critical when shooting slow motion 4K up to 120fps or 8K movies[iii]. The FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G works with Alpha cameras[iv] to reliably focus, and smoothly and silently track even fast-moving subjects. High-thrust XD Linear Motors, optimized optics, and responsive control add up to extraordinarily precise AF performance while keeping the lens compact with internal focus.

Advanced Features for Video Including a New Power Zoom Function

Based on feedback from leading creators, Sony specifically designed the FE PZ 16-35MM F4 G to deliver the refined imagery and control for today’s video needs. It features the latest lens technology to reduce focus breathing as well as focus and axial shift when zooming to ensure the highest quality video is easily captured. Focus, zoom, and aperture operation are also extremely quiet, greatly reducing noise and vibration that can interfere with movie recording.

For the first time in a Sony Alpha lens the FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G uses four XD linear motors for the power zoom function in addition to the two XD linear motors used for focus. With this newly designed electronic power zoom system, the FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G provides advanced control with the response and immediacy of non-powered manual zoom. It features both a zoom ring and a zoom lever with variable zoom speed that makes it easy to execute super-slow, fast or constant-speed change in focal length. Power zoom also minimizes camera shake or movement that can occur when operating a traditional zoom ring, and when used with compatible cameras, users can customize the zoom ring direction to suit shooting conditions. Zoom can also be controlled with the zoom lever on compatible cameras. Remote operation is also possible when using the Imaging Edge™ Mobile app[v].

As an added benefit, users can operate buttons and controls on compatible cameras or accessories for convenient zoom control, including the GP-VPT2BT Bluetooth Grip and Remote Commander RMT-P1BT to remotely control zoom while the camera is mounted on a gimbal[vi].

Furthermore, Linear Response MF ensures high repeatability as the focus ring responds directly and repeatably to subtle control when focusing manually. An aperture ring makes manual aperture/iris control fast, direct, and easy. The aperture ring includes a switch that can select aperture click stops that are ideal for photography or de-click operation for smooth iris control which is ideal for video.

Superior Mobility, Control and Reliability

World-class design and technology come together to deliver a compact, lightweight lens that also includes focus, zoom and aperture/iris rings and power zoom for unprecedented mobility and handling.

Using internal focus and internal zoom, the overall length of the lens remains constant during use for ideal balance and handling. Consistent balance makes this lens an ideal choice for gimbal-mounted movie shooting or use with a matte box. The focus ring can be easily controlled while shooting movies, and the adjacent focus and zoom rings are different sizes so they can be easily operated by feel while viewing the monitor.

More convenient features on the FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G include the Iris Lock Switch that can be engaged to prevent the aperture ring from being accidentally moved between the auto and F4 – F22 settings and the customizable focus hold button for convenient control.

As the world’s lightest[i] F4 wide-angle power-zoom lens, the FE PZ 16-35MM F4 G weighs just 12 ounces (353 grams), 30% less than the Vario-Tessar T* FE 16–35 mm F4 ZA OSS and is just 3.17 inches x 3.47 inches (80.5mm x 88.1mm) in size with a filter diameter of φ72mm. The lens also has a dust and moisture resistant design [vii], as well as a fluorine front element coating to keep it clean and reliable for outdoor use.

Pricing and Availability

The new FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G will be available in June 2022 for approximately $1,200.00 USD and $1,500.00 CAD. It will be sold at a variety of Sony’s authorized dealers throughout North America.

How to Fix Sony A7 IV Overheating Issues ?

We are getting a lot of comments and emails from our users related to the Sony A7 IV heating problem. So, in this article, we will discuss the possible fix for the Sony A7 IV heating issue.

The most common question we get

  1. If the Sony A7S 3 and Sony A7 4 use the same heat sink unit then why does the A74 camera get overheat quickly?
  2. I am using Sony A73 camera, never faced overheating issues like I am facing in Sony A74 ?
  3. My Sony A6400 never gets heated while recording 4k, then why A7 IV get shutoff after 20 min?

Answer: you have to understand that A7 IV does oversample from a 33 MP Sensor / it record oversampled 7k+ file for obtaining highest quality possible. Sony A6400 camera does oversample from a 24MP sensor and manages heat and Sony A73 camera also does the same. And finally, the A7s 3 uses a 12 MP (perfect resolution for 4k video) sensor that doesn’t need to oversample or downsample files. Due to the high-resolution sensor and heat-sink unit of the Sony A7s3 camera the overheating issue is coming, Sony needs to implement a better heat-sink system inside Sony A7 4 camera compared to the A7S3.

Sony A7 IV Overheating Fix

The simple methods that will fix the overheating problem of the Sony A7 IV camera are. Keep the display screen away from the camera body, it helps to dissipate heat much faster.

1. Power Setting options (Recommended)

Power Setting option (9) > Auto Power OFF Temp. > High. This is the most important set to increase the threshold of the camera. After selecting High, yes the camera body will get overheated but the camera will keep recording to the maximum extent possible.

2. Sony A7 IV File Format Settings  (Recommended)

Select XAVC HS 4K mode, the big reason behind the selection the mode uses H.265 codec for compression,  and the file size is approx 2x smaller than the file size we get in H.264 codes. And one of the major advantages we get after selecting this mode we are also getting roughly 2X more recording time with the camera. The only know issue with this model is the frame rates are fixed at 4K 60fps.

3. Movie Settings (Optional)

Once you have selected the XAVC HS 4k mode, Movie Settings > Record Settings > 150M 4:2:0 8bit. If you will select the 8bit recording mode it will create less pressure in the image processor of the camera resulting in less heat generation.

4. Proxy Recording Off (optional)

Keep your proxy Recording Setting off

5. Invest in CF Express Cards (Highly Recommended)

Regular SD Cards tend to generate more heat, better to invest in a CF-express SD card for recording HQ video from Sony A7 IV.

Get these cards asap

Recommended Memory card #1

Recommended Memory card #2

Card reader for these cards

Try the recommended methods first, even after that the overheating time isn’t extended compared to earlier settings then also try the optional steps I have recommended in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th points.
