Sony A1 vs Canon R5 Specification Comparison – Sony announced a brand new Sony A1 Mirrorless camera with a newly developed 50MP sensor. We are comparing the core specification of the Sony A1 and the Canon EOS R5 camera.

1. Sony A1 Camera Image Sensor with Stacked BSI CMOS tech

Sony A1 camera features a newly developed 50MP Stacked BSI Hybrid CMOS sensor. The Canon EOS R5 uses a 45MP Conventional DPAF CMOS sensor.  We have very little difference in resolution of both the camera. As you all know, BSI sensors are known for better low-light performance. However, we will soon publish the High ISO test between the two cameras and will also update this article.

4. Auto Focus, Canon still Lead with DPAF II

Canon features a total no of 5940 AF points in its sensor. These overall AF points are grouped into 1053 AF zones. In Sony A1 camera we have a total of 759 AF points in the sensor supported by 425 contrast-based AF points.

AF coverage has been expanded to approximately 100% × 100% of the image area of Canon EOS R5 whereas in Sony we have 92% coverage and less density of AF points compared to the R5 sensor.

5. 8k Video Capable Mirrorless Camera saga

Canon EOS R5 knows of overheating issue in its 8k video mode, however, after the latest firmware update, the camera now allows you to record 2X more time in a single run.  Canon EOS R5 overheating chart below

Sony A1 uses an A7S III Heat sink unit, Now the Sony A1 camera down samples 8.6K footage from a 50MP sensor whereas the Sony A7S III uses a 12MP sensor.  So. how much capable the Sony A1 heat sink unit is capable of we will know soon once the camera reached in the hand of real-world users. There are now a few confirmed reports by the first Sony A7S III reviewers that the camera has an overheating problem in the bright midday sun.

4k from 8k (Canon R5) and 5.8k (Sony A1): As you can see, the HQ 4k footage of Canon EOS R5 is being created from an 8k oversampled file, so it contains an enormous amount of fine details captured by the sensor. Sony A1 uses 5.8k oversampled footage to create 4k video.

6. Verdict

Sony has better sensor technology, a usable AF system (not as good as Canon EOS R5), and faster continuous shooting speed. On the video side, we do have better heat management (as promised by the camera maker) with 8k video capability. The only difference now left is the price, if you’re ok with the Sony price tag then go and buy the Sony A1. Otherwise if you are a photographer and with limited video requirements, you can go with Canon EOS R5.

Sony A7R V Camera Specifications [prediction]

Sony A7R IV Camera specs making round on web,  prediction of these specs done by semorg a preview forum Contributing Member with Posts: 961 pos. (that means the member is genuine). Now, if you have less time let me summarize for you

Sony A7R V AKA nail in the coffin of Canon.

Seeing many YT influencers (I agree they are not all real working pros) talk about how they are considering switching from Canon to Sony after using A7SIII, I can see Sony going for the jugular of Canon and make a canon 5R without overheating.

It safe to say, it’ll take Canon 2 years to resign their body to deal with the heat issue. Canon’s best bet is to take the 5R and put it inside their cinema camera with ample fan and cooling and call it Cinema R 500. Or keep the EF mount and call it EOS C400 and offer it at a reasonable price to keep their base from jumping ship to Sony. They still have the dual gain system in their new C500 that is designed close the gap with Alexa. So they can differentiate pricing and products but at the same time save face a bit with their 8K PR nightmare.

1. 61 MP. Same sensor as A7R IV.

We have seen Sony alternate between image sensor update and processing update. With A7RIV we saw a new sensor, with A7R V will get a new processor.

2. Bionz XR Same processor(s) as A7SIII

This update cycle of the A7Rx is with the image processor. Sony’s new image processor is designed to handle high volume data processing (4K @ 120 fps) and probably room for more.

It’s safe to assume outside of the upcoming A5/A6 which probably will be a crippled A7III (Sony’s answer to Nikon Z5) the future full frame Sony systems will use the new Bionz XR.

3. 8K Video at 30 FPS

It’s safe to assume if the new processor can churn through 120 FPS @4k it can handle 8K at 30 FPS.

The new CFExpress A can handle that kind of bandwidth. Taking 4k 30 All-I H.264 at 300 Mbs. We can assume a 1200 Mbs for 8K All-I. Remember the new Sony Tough Cards are claiming 5600 Mbs (700 MBs). So potentially the could even handle 8K at 120FPS one day.

Sony has figured out how to dissipate heat and will basically release a competitive “halo” product to Canon’s 5R without the heating PR nightmare.

4. 1.1-1.3x crop.

We can assume there will be a slight crop (1.1 ~ 1.3) for 8K (for D and U). This crop will probably allow for a better stabilization by combining IBIS and electronic.

5. 4K HQ at 30 FPS (possibly 60 FPS)

This is the 8K image downsized to 4K. 30 Is probably doable, 60 probably is and to match Canon with specs Sony might just include it.

6. 120FPS (4k pixel binned, APSC or HD)

Just like the Sony A7RIV we’ll have a 120FPS option. With a new processor Sony should be able to have a better 120FPS video but we shall see. Minimum will be HD it’s possible they can do a crop 4K 120 FPS.

7. 5.5 ~ 6 Stops IBIS

It’s possible Sony might need to have a crop option (1.1 ~ 1.2) for even stronger IBIS to match Canon’s or they could just keep what they have.

8. Dual CFExpress A

So long as other manufactures are late to the game, you can view CFExpress card as a bit like the printer cartridge business. For a pro who need to buy 4-5 cards (maybe even more) it grantees additional revenue stream to Sony.

Copied from A7SIII – View finder (for a large pixel camera they’ll keep a high resolution viewfinder), LCD screen, AF system, menu system (this is obviously the menu going forward), color science (we might assume Sony has reached the peak of their color science).

9. Full-size HDMI ?

Unclear if Sony wants to differentiate between S and the R model and not include a full HDMI cable. I have a feeling Sony is going to go for the jugular of Canon and probably offer full HDMI.

10. 16bit linear RAW?

Sony/Atomos might be working on some kind of a recorder to keep all the 16 bit linear for external recording. Atomos Ninja has been upgrading well, but I’m wondering if an upgrade is in the works. I think the A7RV is going to be a canon 5R killer and Sony will probably won’t hold back.

11. What about Sony A7IV?

This is going to be even more of an anticipated wait. A7IV is coming (October/November?). It must be based on the Bionz XR so very possible it’ll be the camera that will dominate the full-frame market in 2021. We could expect a 6K raw camera that will go head to head with Panasonic S1H. It might not have all the video functions like S1H but image quality will be similar to a really good and functioning AF.

Sony A7C Sensor Score

Sony A7C Sensor score surfaced over the web. The overall score of the camera is 95  which is really impressive. However, despite having the same sensor as of Sony A7 III camera, Sony A7C scored low marks in low-light tests compared to A7 III.

Verdict from DXOmark

Featuring a rangefinder-style body, the Sony A7C is an intriguing step between the Sony A6xxx series and the DSLR-style A7xxx models. While targeting the hybrid stills and video market, the design means it’s likely to find favor with vloggers and others looking for a highly compact and portable full-frame camera, and it’s an attractive alternative to the larger A7 III and A9 models. At launch, the price is advantageous as well.

The BSI-CMOS in the Sony A7C performs well altogether. The results are practically identical to the sensors in the Sony A7 III and A9 II, and it produces a nice balance between maximum dynamic range at low ISOs and maintaining a usefully wide dynamic range at higher ISO settings. And the same can be said for color depth. All combined, the Sony A7C is an attractive option for landscape, travel, wedding, and portrait photographers, while the rangefinder-style body should also appeal to the traditional street photographer
