GXR Third Function-enhancing Firmware
< Enhanced Functions for All Camera Units >
- Addition of the “Scene Mode” for photographic expression with a difference
- The addition of the new “Scene Mode” provides 5 types of mode to expand your photographic expression. Choose from “Soft Focus”, “Cross Process”, “Toy Camera”, “Miniaturize”, and “High Contrast Monochrome”. Simply press the shutter release to take a truly unique shot.
- Addition of “Target Follow Function” to AE/AF target movement function
- The “Target follow function” is added to the target movement function that locks the exposure or focus on a specific part of the photographic subject. When the camera follows the subject, this function automatically continues to adjust to the target position, so that the subject is in focus at precisely the moment you want to shoot.
- “Reset/Cancel” function added for AE/AF target move
- By pressing the cancel button during AE/AF target move, the image monitor returns to the central position. When the cancel button is pressed again, the target move mode is cancelled.
- “Magnified playback function” added that magnifies the center of the target moved position
- When magnifying the playback screen, the center of the position moved to as the AE/AF target can be the center of the magnification

- Exposure correction and white balance can be assigned to the zoom button.
- In the key custom settings, exposure correction or white balance functions can be assigned to the zoom button.

- Addition of Target Follow AF Function
- By half-pressing the shutter button and following the set subject, this function continues to adjust to the subject position so that the subject is in focus at precisely the moment you want to shoot.
- Addition of “AF/Target Follow AF” switching function to the Fn. button
- “AF/Target Follow AF” is added as one of the functions that can be registered to the Fn (function) 1 or Fn2 button. If the focus method is set to “multi AF”, “spot AF”, or “Target follow AF”, the focus method can be switched between “multi AF” and “Target follow AF”, or between “Spot AF” and “Target follow AF”.
- Addition of setting change function to ADJ. lever for scene mode
- When shooting in a scene mode such as “dynamic range double shot”, “cross process”, or “high contrast monochrome”, the new function enables the ADJ. lever to be used to change settings such as ISO sensitivity and image quality.
- Addition of a selection function to the white balance manual setting capture area
- When setting the white balance manually, the capture area used as the standard for white balance can be selected from “Entire frame” or “Spot”.
- Electronic level display for self-timer
- When using the self-timer, the electronic level continues to be displayed after the self-timer is started.

The RICOH Compact Digital Camera GXR has been awarded the international “iF product design award 2011” Gold Award
TOKYO, March 2, 2011—The compact digital camera GXR produced by RICOH (president and CEO: Shiro Kondo) has been awarded the specially selected “Gold Award” in the “iF product design award 2011” competition which recognizes international design excellence.
The iF design award is an internationally acclaimed award managed by the German iF International Forum Design GmbH. Not limited to Germany, entries are received from all over the world. Winning products are selected for their international acclaim and design excellence. This year, there were 1,121 applications from 43 countries for the “iF product design award 2011”, and of the 2,756 products judged, only 993 were given awards. The Gold Award is the distinction given only to the top 50 products selected from the 993 award finalists.
This is the second time RICOH has received the iF gold award. The GX100 digital camera was awarded the same prize in 2008.

 Ricoh GXR Tokyo, Japan, February 1, 2011—Ricoh Co., Ltd. (president and CEO: Shiro Kondo) today announced the development of expansion unit for the GXR interchangeable unit camera system, which went on sale on December 18, 2009.
The GXR is a revolutionary new interchangeable unit camera system in which lenses can be changed by mounting camera units that integrate lens, image sensor, and image processing engine into a single unit. In addition, fully utilizing its unique capabilities, the GXR line will expand to include a variety of devices through the addition of interchangeable units other than camera units.
The GXR line now includes four camera units, but the newly developed unit being announced here is an expansion unit.
Development model name: GXR Lens Mount Unit
- With this lens mount unit, photographers can mount lenses such as Leica M lenses and use them for shooting with the GXR.
- The lens mount unit is being designed to make the best use of the optical characteristics of the lenses mounted. It will have as its image sensor a 23.6 mm × 15.7 mm (APS-C size; total pixels: approx. 12.90 million) CMOS sensor, and it will also feature a newly developed focal plane shutter.
- Release is planned for the autumn of 2011.
There are plans to display a design mock-up of the GXR lens mount unit at the CP+ CAMERA & PHOTO IMAGING SHOW to be held from February 9 (Wed.) to 12 (Sat.) at Pacifico Yokohama.

 The New CX5 digital camera model with its wide-angle, high magnification 10.7× optical zoom (28–300 mm) lens, which has a higher autofocus speed due to the use of Ricoh’s new hybrid AF system.
With the new CX5 model, AF focusing times are decreased to as low as 0.2 sec. for both wide-angle 28 mm and telephoto 300 mm, up to half as short compared to the CX4, using Ricoh’s unique new hybrid AF system. This ensures that you reliably capture the image you were waiting for, never to miss another good shot again.
- High-speed autofocus using the unique hybrid AF system developed by Ricoh
- Equipped with Ricoh’s unique new hybrid AF system in combination with a passive AF sensor that continuously measures the distance between the camera and subject using an area sensor together with Contrast AF (a system in which the imaging elements search for the peak location for contrast on the subject and focus on that location).
- Enables AF focusing times to be shortened to as low as 0.2 sec. for both wide-angle 28 mm and telephoto 300 mm, up to half as short compared to the CX4 model. Ensures that you capture the image you were waiting for over the entire zoom range so that you never miss another good shot again.
- Improved image resolution through use of super-resolution technology
- Enables amazing photographs with high resolution to be produced using the CX5’s new super-resolution technology, which discerns outlines, details, and gradations in the image automatically and processes the image based on the optimal settings for each. The level of super-resolution can be set to OFF, Weak, or Strong.
- Super-resolution zoom equivalent to up to 600 mm in addition to the 10.7× 28–300 mm optical zoom
- Allows a wide-angle, high-magnification 10.7× optical zoom lens to fit into a compact body with a thickness of 29.4 mm using Ricoh’s unique retracting lens system.
- Equipped with super-resolution zoom that enables magnification of up to 2.0×. Enables telephoto shooting at up to 600 mm equivalent with minimal degradation in image quality.
- Enables even greater magnification of the subject from super-resolution zoom with use of digital zoom. Allows photographs to be taken with ultra-telephoto zoom at up to 2880 mm.
- High-quality photography that widens the range of image expression
- Offering reduced loss of detail in highlights using an output pixel interpolation algorithm residing in dedicated logic circuits in the Smooth Imaging Engine IV imaging engine to allow high-contrast scenes to be reproduced more faithfully, exactly as they appear to the naked eye.
- Reduces noise without affecting resolution, tone characteristics, or color using a noise reduction algorithm to process the image signal as it is output from the CMOS image sensor. Enables sophisticated variance-estimation type noise reduction processing in which the sensor image data’s noise variance is analyzed and the optimum processing is done for each region when the noise reduction level is set to MAX.
- Equipped with a back-illuminated 10.00 million-pixel CMOS sensor. Ensures that beautiful images can be captured even in dark scenes.
- 14 different types of Scene Modes providing easy access to whole suites of photographic techniques specifically adapted to the subject
- Comes with a new Cooking mode that is perfect for shooting photographs of food. The new Cooking mode setting enables the brightness and color tone of the scene to be adjusted while the subject is checked.
