Nikon Z6 Mark II vs Nikon Z5 - 2023

Nikon Z6 Mark II or Nikon Z5 – Which is the best camera for you in 2023? Should you buy Nikon Z6 Mark II vs Nikon Z5?    I am getting many questions from wedding photographers too related to the same topic.

It’s all about the budget you have

If your budget allows then the best camera is Nikon Z6 Mark II with its advanced Artificial Autofocus system and BSI CMOS full-frame sensor.  So, with the Nikon Z6 mark II camera, you get an advanced AF system and a better low-light performing sensor. The cherry on top is the Nikon Z6 mark II features dual card slot support for professionals.

Why is Nikon Z6 Mark II Sensor better?

Nikon Z6 Mark II camera features a BSI CMOS sensor and due to the presence of BSI tech, the sensor should deliver better performance in low-light conditions, to test that we have visited the dpereview image comparison tool. Does the BSI tech really help to perform better in low-light

At ISO 102400 both image samples are almost unusable, but we are not here to find out the usable ISO range of both cameras. We want to see the actual difference between the BSI and the FSI sensor, do you guys notice any visible difference between the two sensors? do it worth the price difference between them? Let me know in the comments

Nikon Z6 Mark II vs Nikon Z5 Image Analysis

As we can clearly see the Nikon Z6 mark II camera is able to reserve more details at a Higher ISO range compared to the Nikon Z5 camera.  You can see the difference in the color block. The outer edge of the Brown color block is distended at the same time the color noise is also too high.

If we change the ISO one-stop

As you can clearly notice if we change the ISO, 1 stop lower than of Nikon Z6 Mark II (102400 vs 51200), Then we can notice the Nikon Z5 performance not only matches with the Nikon Z6 Mark II but is also slightly better too.

Image Sensor Part Conclusion

Getting a BSI sensor does help to preserve details, but not in a dramatic way. But, we have to see the other significant advantages too, of having Nikon Z6 Mark II camera.

Autofocus System

Image processors do have a very high impact on the type of AF system your camera carries. The Nikon Z5 suffers from limitations and to save up the production line cost Nikon added a single-line processor in Nikon Z5 on the other side we have a DUAL IMAGE PROCESSOR in Nikon Z6 II.

  • Z5: -2Ev, or -3Ev when using Low Light AF
  • Z6 II: -4.5Ev, or -6Ev with Low Light AF

As you can see the AF sensitivity range of the Nikon Z5 is limited when compared to the Nikon Z6 Mark II camera.

Single Image Processor, Slow Sensor, and Fewer updates for Upscaling AF

The same number of AF points but Slow Sensor readout and slow image processing. Both of the cameras share the same number of 273 focus points across the frame, But due to the FSI sensor and slow image processor the Nikon Z5 camera burst speed remains limited to 4.5 FPS, and the Nikon Z6 Mark II can shoot up to 14fps with fulltime AF and AI tracking speed.

Continuous Firmware Updates for Nikon Z6 Mark II loaded with NEW AI AF Algos. If you will check the firmware update history from the time of the announcement of the Nikon Z6 Mark II camera, Nikon is very serious about improving the AF performance of the Nikon Z6 Mark II camera. And the updated pattern also tells us may Nikon Z5 isn’t getting that much attention from Nikon.

Nikon Z6 Mark II firmware F1.0 to F1.50 we have a massive upgrade in the AF performance of the camera

Nikon Made the following improvements Nikon Z6 Mark II AF Algo after the announcement

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.30 to 1.40

  • – The camera focuses more readily on the subject in the center of the frame if it fails to detect the face or eyes of a portrait subject when Auto-area AF is selected for AF-area mode.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.10 to 1.20

  • • Improved low-light autofocus detection times at a Focus mode setting of Single AF.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.02 to 1.10

  •  Improved eye-detection performance in Auto-area AF (people) and Wide-area AF (L-people) AF-area modes.

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.00 to 1.01

  • Fixed an issue that sometimes caused overexposure in photos taken in continuous release modes using an AF-area mode with human or animal face/eye detection.

Vs Nikon Z5 Firmware updates related to Autofocus Upscaling after its announcement

Changes from “C” Firmware Version 1.02 to 1.10

  • Improved low-light autofocus detection times for Custom Setting a11 (Low-light AF).

Nikon Z6 Mark II has the basic ingredients or better to say good hardware inside (which includes a faster readout base BSI sensor and dual image processor to processor AI algo) which allows the Nikon team of developers to upscale the AF performance of the camera flawlessly.

Best Camera for Video?

Nikon Z5, as well as the Nikon Z6 Mark II Cameras, can record 4K video up to 30p but, unfortunately, the Z5 applies a heavy 1.7x crop in 4K video recording mode which makes it almost unusable for professional use.
The Best thing about The Z6 II can record oversampled 4K. And also, the Z6 II can also record 4K up to 60p but only with a 1.5x crop (firmware 1.10 required).

The reason for the heavy crop is that the Z5 old FSI sensor has a slow readout speed, which doesn’t allow the camera to read the entire sensor.

Even in Full HD mode the Nikon Z5 is limited to 60FPS and the Nikon Z6 Mark II goes up to 120p (when using the Slow Motion mode).

ISO range in Video

Z5: 100-25600 ISO
Z6 II: 100-51200 ISO (up to 204,800 with the extended range)

Now, the set of features that only the Nikon Z6 Mark II camera supports at the moment is 12-bit RAW HDMI output. When the Nikon Z6 Mark II is Coupled with an external recorder such as the Ninja V or Blackmagic Video Assist, you can record 10-bit 4:2:2 with N-Log or HLG gamma, or output 12-bit RAW (Apple Prores or BlackMagic RAW). ( paid upgrade)

BREAKING NEWS: Nikon Z8 as Christmas Gift from Nikon?

As you can see Thom hogan uploaded a pic of a Christmas gift on his website Take a look text written in the gift box, it looks like the pre-production model is already in the hands of reviewers around the web. Thom has also writes

A new Z8 with a new Speedlight. With the new lenses. With no mechanical shutter. With some new software updates (note that NX Mobile Air just got a significant one)…..bonus points for performance superlatives, such as 10K raw video or 60 fps raw stills. Deductions for leaving out something, such as pixel-shift capture or higher resolution EVFs.

Not only Nikon Z8, but Thom hogan also writes an entire  article on what he is expecting from Nikon in the CES event 2023

CES is Probably Worthwhile if…

…we get a new, useful, interesting camera. I suppose I’d put a Z70, Z6 III, or Z7 III in that category

full article here zsystemuser

Well, that’s really exciting news, if we consider all the hints from the images and the text.. then for sure the Nikon Z8 announcement is in the corner and we will see it very soon. Most probably in the CES show. Well, let’s hope for the best.

Nikon Z30 Low Light Performance is Insane

Nikon Z30 Low test published by Photons to Photos, in the test you can see Nikon has used the same sensor we have seen in the Nikon Z50 camera. So, finally, the Nikon Z30 has become the best camera for low-light / uncontrolled light environments in that price range.

As you can see the graph performance graph of Nikon ZFC, Nikon Z30, and Nikon Z50 punched together. And we have no visible difference in the sensor performance of all these cameras.

As you can see the low light performance, as well as the Photographic Dynamic range of the Nikon Z30, also matches with the Sony A6400. Being an $800 camera its sensor performance matches with higher price range competitors.

That’s the biggest reason Nikon Z30 was able to make its way into our Best Camera under the $1000 2023 list.

Nikon Upcoming Camera 2024 - 2025

Set of upcoming Nikon cameras that we will see in the year 2024 and 2025. We already have a credible announcement of the Nikon Z6 Mark III camera in the year 2024 and we are waiting for Nikon Z50 Mark II as well as P1000 Mark II.

1. Nikon Z50 Mark II

So far, we have an updated core specification of the upcoming Nikon Z50 Mark II camera, and as per the latest core specification, we may have the same 20 Megapixel CMOS sensor that we have seen in the original Z50.

Nikon Z50 II Rumored Specs

  • Updated body design
  • Expeed 7
  • A vari-angle screen like the Z6 III
  • USB-C
  • Will use the same Nikon EN-EL25 battery
  • Official announcement: soon (before the end of 2024)
  • The same 20.9MP DX-format CMOS sensor

The launch of the camera is expected sometime in September or October. We will update you when we get any new information related to the upcoming Z 50 Mark II camera.

If the rumored specification is true, then for sure Nikon will disappoint a lot of consumers out there. But at the same time, we do know that the Z50, as well as Nikon Z30, and we can also consider the Nikon Zfc here, are the best APS-C line of cameras in terms of low light performance. So, it’s a kind of choice that consumers have to make between having a Higher Resolution APS-C camera from a different brand or a camera that performs exceptionally well in low light.

2. Nikon Z7 Mark III

The next rumored camera is the Nikon Z7 Mark III. Why are we talking about the Nikon Z7 Mark III camera? Since the Z6 Mark III already arrived, it’s obvious that the Z7 Mark III is in the announcement pipeline. The other thing that is supporting the framework of the rumor is a massive discount going on for the Z7 Mark II camera body. You can look at it in the store, and it’s giving more than $1000 discount on the body of the Z7 Mark II camera at the time when I am writing this article.

Nikon Z7 Mark II Camera Specification

  • 61.2 MP FX-Format BSI CMOS Sensor
  • Dual EXPEED 7 Image Processors

We expect a 60-megapixel BSI full-frame sensor in the Nikon Z7 Mark III camera body. At the very same time, we are also expecting 8K video recording capability, as we have already seen in the Nikon Z8 as well as Nikon Z9. Let’s hope for the best and wait for the upcoming Z7 Mark III.

3. Nikon Z90 / Z70

Nikon D500 camera replacement or you can also call it, Nikon Z90 Z70. (name not confirmed yet) is expected to arrive in the year 2023.  The only details we have related to the upcoming Nikon APS-C flagship camera is

Nikon Z90 – APS-C flagship| Stacked APS-C Sensor| Built in IBIS | 6K | Arrival date unknown

So, yes we are waiting for the Nikon Z90 and lets hope we will see it soon.

5. Nikon Z5 Mark II

Nikon Z5 Mark II update was expected to arrive in 2023, but unfortunately, the camera has been delayed. The Nikon Z5 was announced back in July 2020. So, its overdue for an update

6. Nikon Z9S

The Nikon Z9S is rumored to arrive sometime in Q4 of 2025. The name is not confirmed yet, but there was a tip that Project Z9S has been started. The camera is coming to directly compete against the existing Canon R3 as well as Canon R1, with flagship capabilities and ultra-fast shooting speed, with a kind of lower resolution sensor similar to what we have seen in the Nikon Z6 Mark III.

But keep in mind Nikon is very smart with their moves; they have added a partially developed stacked CMOS sensor in their Z6 Mark III camera, not the fully stacked sensor, and the big reason was to save it for a future flagship model. So, yes, a 24 MP fully developed stacked CMOS sensor is still under development, and we will soon see it in the Z9S camera body.

The Nikon Re-Branding Saga Continues with 17-28mm F2.8 Lens

Again one more re-branded lens?  So, it looks like Nikon is in the mood to announce Tamron’s most popular Trio Lenses under its name. Now we are waiting for the third one the Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 VXD under the NIKKOR brand.

Just as Nikon did with its Nikkor Z 28–75mm F2.8 lens, which appeared to be reworked and rebadged Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 lens, this Nikkor Z 17-28mm F2.8 seems to essentially be a ‘Nikonized’ version of Tamron’s 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD lens. dpreview

The Nikkor Z 17-28mm F2.8 will be available ‘in late October 2022’ for an MSRP of $1,200.

Capture the Big Picture with Nikon’s Latest Affordable f/2.8 Zoom Lens

MELVILLE, NY (September 20, 2022) Nikon Inc. has announced the NIKKOR Z 17-28mm f/2.8, the latest addition to the growing selection of extremely-capable and very affordable f/2.8 zoom lenses. This new full-frame lens combines the versatility of an ultra-wide angle of field view with the benefits of large fixed aperture, putting low light performance and gorgeous bokeh within reach.

“The amount of NIKKOR Z lenses continues to increase at a rapid pace, giving all kinds of creators mirrorless lenses built with the latest in optical innovation,” said Jay Vannatter, Executive Vice President, Nikon Inc. “The new NIKKOR Z 17-28mm f/2.8 is derived from the same mutual concept as the recent NIKKOR Z 28-75mm f/2.8 lens, establishing a series of affordable zooms that open a gateway to fast-aperture performance and absolute versatility.”

The NIKKOR Z 17-28mm f/2.8 is a lens for storytellers, captivating the viewer with vast landscapes, grand interiors or enveloping their senses with the starry night sky. The combination of the ultra-wide angle perspective and bright constant f/2.8 aperture liberates the creator, turning everyday scenes into impressive images and videos that grab the viewers’ attention or establish the scene. This wide aperture not only enhances the lens’ low light performance, but also creates a gorgeous out-of-focus area to make the subject pop. Scenes that were previously difficult to photograph are easier than ever to capture in vibrant detail, such as a packed dance floor at a wedding reception or a backlit subject within a cityscape.

The new NIKKOR Z 17-28mm f/2.8 is ready to go anywhere. This extremely lightweight and portable lens weighs in at only 450 g (15.9 oz), which is approximately 30% lighter than the NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8. It’s also lighter and more compact than the NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 lens, and uses a 67mm threaded mount for circular polarizers or neutral density filters. The lens’ minimal weight and internal zooming make it easy to pack or carry anywhere, and create an ideal partner for gimbals since the balance of the lens never changes.

The lens is constructed for creators who aren’t afraid to go off the beaten path in pursuit of their content. The entire lens is sealed to prevent entry of dust and water droplets¹, while the front element features an antifouling coating which makes it easy to wipe away dirt, smudges and fingerprints. The NIKKOR Z 17-28mm f/2.8 puts an emphasis on sharpness, utilizing an optical formula that employs a Super ED glass element for maximum image quality at all focal lengths.

Autofocus speed is blazing fast, thanks to the use of a high-speed stepping motor (STM), working seamlessly with Nikon Z mirrorless cameras to acquire critical focus on faces and eyes within the frame. The STM is also nearly silent, significantly reducing drive noise during video recording. Video content creators will especially appreciate the minimized focus breathing and click-less control ring for smooth exposure transitions. For additional versatility in photos and video, minimum focus distance is a mere 7.56 inches (0.19 m)², letting users get close-up for products and beauty shots with a magnificently blurred background.

Pricing and Availability

The new NIKKOR Z 17-28mm f/2.8 will be available in late October 2022 for a suggested retail price of $1,199.95*. For more information about the latest Nikon products, including other NIKKOR Z lenses and the entire collection of Z series cameras, please visit nikonusa.com.
