This would be good if true, as there needs to be more higher quality capable cameras in compact form. I believe there are far too many compact cameras that utilise 1/2.3″ sensors, it’s not distinguished enough from what the latest phones are capable of. The only attractive factor of many of the compact cameras is their super-zoom capability. In reality though most pictures people take on these super-zooms aren’t anywhere near the maximum zoom capability, and if they are the pictures aren’t as good as they ‘could be’ because they are done hand held and the lens can have an aperture of F6.0 (for example). The best image stabilisation can’t make up for that.
I must Camera reviewers do a great job at showing what these cameras are capable of, but most people using these cameras are amateurs (at best), they simply won’t capture the quality in the images that enthusiast reviewers manage to take.
For the compact camera market to continue they will have to progress to using at least 1/1.7″ sensors, maybe a more sensible zoom range but have a larger aperture, and keep the price down. If you look around, it’s typically the ‘older’ crowd that still buys these compact cameras, people who haven’t kept up with the latest phones. The only compact camera I have seen bought by someone in their early twenties recently (I’m just 30 myself) is a Casio EX-100 (be careful with those Casio model numbers), which I have to admit is an absolutely beautiful compact camera, the only downside is its cost. That said, I think if their were more cameras like that on the market equivalent camera’s price would come down and we’d actually have a decent compact camera market again.
As for current 1/2.3″ sensor, small aperture at zoom cameras, I wouldn’t recommend any to anyone as they are about 5 years late to the market.
The second paragraph is meant to be:
I must admit that most camera reviewers do a great job at showing what these cameras are capable of, however the typical users of these cameras are amateurs (at best); they simply won’t capture the quality in the images that enthusiast reviewers manage to capture.
