The U.S. Federal Communications Commission is moving to stop further sales of the DJI Mini 5 Pro in the United States. The ban is expected to take effect in mid-to-late March 2027.

Why the Mini 5 Pro Is Affected
If you want to own a Mini 5 Pro, you should buy it before March 2027. We’re going to explain exactly why. And if your business depends on this particular drone. Especially if you’re a wedding cinematographer or create a lot of aerial content, then you should seriously consider keeping one, two, or even three extra units before the commercial sales ban takes effect.
It’s time to explain why the ban is expected in March 2027. As per the latest July update, the FCC has proposed updating the definition of “military-grade” drones. Under this proposal, any foreign-made drone that carries LiDAR sensors is now classified as military-grade and will no longer be allowed for further sale or import. That same LiDAR sensor is also widely used for high-precision 3D mapping, which is one of the main reasons the FCC is targeting it.
The FCC’s own explanation for targeting LiDAR is clear. According to the public notice, these systems offer:
“enhanced capability to conduct detailed three-dimensional terrain mapping, penetrate dense foliage to reveal hidden structures, assist in autonomous navigation in GPS-denied environments, and conduct covert reconnaissance under a range of environmental conditions.”
Because of this, the agency is classifying LiDAR-equipped foreign drones as “military-grade” and seeking to cut off further sales.

The proposal specifically states that, if adopted, all parties must cease importation and marketing activities 180 days after the final decision is published in the Federal Register.
We all know what happens with public comments. They generally go into the trash bin. DJI has done a lot of campaigning during the first ban, which happened back in December 2025. They did a lot. They initiated paid campaigns and opened dedicated pages for collecting public comments. Nothing worked at that time. So, it clearly indicates that they don’t care about public opinion. They have already taken the decision when they implemented the rule, and they just have to follow the procedure to make sure it happens.
What DJI Says
DJI has strongly opposed the move. In its official statement, the company called the proposal a “total reversal” from the FCC’s previous position.
DJI stated:
“Although the proposal is framed as targeting ‘military-grade’ drones, the FCC’s definition could include drones with thermal imaging or LiDAR capabilities… People could continue using DJI products they already own, but the same models in use today might no longer be available to purchase in the future.”
The company also emphasised that it does not design or manufacture military-grade equipment and has consistently opposed the weaponisation of civilian drones.
