Insta360 has officially revealed its long-term product vision, and if we believe what they are working on, they are about to change the face of the entire photography industry.
It all started on the company’s 11th anniversary, when Insta360 officially announced that they were working on building a “Cameraman”. The Cameraman is not a human being. It’s an AI robot that is highly intelligent, automatically composes shots, captures them, and not only preserves them in memory, but also edits and processes the entire content that the AI robot has captured. So, it’s a future vision that seems to make the entire photography/content creation workflow highly dependent on AI robots, and they want to make the entire content creation experience, as well as event photography, seamless and painless. The entire process is about to be automated soon.
The statement came directly from Insta360 founder and CEO Liu Jingkang (影石刘靖康) on Weibo, where he is also serving as a judge and prompt-setter for the #WeiboVibeLab# AI Creativity Contest.

The Core Vision
Here’s the key part of Liu’s statement:
“Our product vision is to build a ‘Cameraman’ photography robot that can automatically compose shots and capture moments for you like a professional photographer, letting you be fully immersed in the present. Today, AI is rapidly completing the Cameraman’s brain, driving its evolution and making recording increasingly imaginative.
In the long run, the ideal end state for cameras is to progressively become imperceptible, even to ‘disappear,’ until recording no longer consumes effort and becomes a natural part of life.”
This is not a sudden idea. Liu had already spoken about the concept earlier this year in a shareholder letter, describing a future where everyone could have a portable “photography robot” that moves, finds angles, and captures moments while the user simply enjoys the present.
Not One Robot – An Intelligent Agent
As we can see, the CEO of Insta360 is not talking about a single agent or a single solution. Instead, the Cameraman is described as a concept and a long-term direction of an auto-shooting AI agent. It can take different physical forms, depending upon the type of situation we are dealing with. It can be a wearable device, an AI-based intelligent drone that quickly composes shots and videos on the go, or maybe a Luna Ultra-style camera moving on the ground to compose shots. So, the area of application is very wide, and the physical form is not limited to a specific dimension or usage.
According to the company, the system is built around several key layers:
- Brain: AI for scene understanding, intent recognition, and decision-making
- Eyes: Advanced camera sensors and lenses
- Ears: Audio capture and spatial awareness
- Neck and body: Stabilization systems (gimbals) and mobility (drones or other platforms)
Insta360 has pointed to products like the recently launched Luna Ultra dual-camera gimbal as an important, still-incomplete step toward this vision. Their panoramic drones are also being positioned as early prototypes of the Cameraman idea.
Why This Matters
For years, Insta360 has focused on making cameras more intelligent and less demanding — invisible selfie sticks, strong subject tracking, AI reframing, and hands-free shooting. The Cameraman vision takes that philosophy to its logical extreme.
The ultimate goal is not just better tracking or better image quality. It’s reducing the mental and physical effort of recording or creating content on the go. In Liu’s words, the ideal camera is one people eventually forget is even there.
This aligns with a broader industry shift. As AI improves at understanding scenes, intention, and aesthetics, the role of the camera is moving from a tool you operate to an agent that works alongside you.
Final Thoughts
Insta360 is not claiming it has already built a fully autonomous photography robot. What it has done is publicly plant a clear flag: the company believes the future of cameras is intelligent, mobile, and increasingly invisible.
Whether that future arrives as advanced gimbals, smarter drones, wearable systems, or something more robotic remains to be seen. But the direction is now official.
For creators who have spent years juggling cameras, gimbals, and composition while trying to stay in the moment, Insta360’s Cameraman vision is an interesting – and ambitious – promise.
