We are talking about a technological breakthrough done by Panasonic. According to DCWATCH (Highly reputed Japanese website) Panasonic successfully developed a 36MP 4/3 Sensor able to record 8K video. Initially they may use this sensor for Panasonic GH5R? (just a thought) by limiting it to 4K or 6K video mode.
Now 2 years from now Panasonic representative told yes they are working to make a consumer camera available on 2020 Olympics with 8K video capability.
This year are expecting to see Panasonic GH6 camera with 6K capability coming on September 2018 [Pho0tokina event]. And after a year gap [2019] we will sure see a Panasonic GH8 K camera from Panasonic.

It’s impossible for 4/3rds format sensor to record true 8K, ie 7680 x 4320, which is 16:9 format. There is not enough spare pixels to accomodate the crop. Either they are making a different format sensor or they are talking crap.
At a minimum they would need a 4/3 sensor to have a resolution of
7680 x 5760 = 44.3MP
and they would probably need more so as to not use pixels right to the edge of the sensor.
Odin,they could be using the so-called multi-aspect ratio like that found in GH5S, which would allow to use the whole image circle in 16:9. Haven’t done any calculations though.
If it is multi-aspect do you really think they will build a 44MP 4/3rd sensor, which is FF equivalent of 160MP. Even 36MP in such a small sensor seems crazy IMO.
8K from current high end FF is doable.
