If we believe the latest gossip going around the web Canon 70D successor may get massive jump in resolution. The Canon 70D features 20.2 Megapixel Dual-pixel CMOS AF sensor, the upcoming camera is expected to arrive with 28 – 34mp high resolution sensor.
Other rumored specification include introduction of silent electronic shutter mode in Canon DSLRs, color top LCD that can display information like the histogram, and voice control.
Some previous rumors also suggest that the upcoming Canon 80D may use Hybrid CMOS AF sensor, but I am sure that Canon will use Dual-Pixel CMOS AF technology inside the upcoming 80D camera, the Hybrid CMOS AF Sensor tech is limited to entry level and mid-entry level series (XXXD and XXXD).

But what made Canon / or Canon Predictors to think that the upcoming 80D camera will jump to 28-34 MP from the current Canon 70D 20.2 Megapixel resolution…
The recently announced Samsung NX1 cores specification created a new benchmark in the space of High-End APS-C camera. The core specification that includes a super-high resolution 28 MP APS-C sensor, Hybrid CMOS AF sensor and able to record 4K videos with blazing fast AF.
Canon and all other companies have a series of fullframe camera dedicated to high resolution (Canon 5DS, Nikon D810 and Sony A7R II), but No high resolution APS-C sensor based camera ever produced from Canon, Nikon or Sony till now except Samsung. Canon may be thinking to make XXD series a high-resolution dedicated series for studiographers & commercial photographers.
