This is really a strange rumor since according to the source of SAR website some of the prototypes of the Sony A7R II exist in the wild by having curved sensor inside.
We can’t deny the possibility but Take this rumor with a grain of salt,
Now let’s talk about the curved sensor…
We have published the Sony curved sensor patent on July 6th, 2014, we have also published the sample image captured by curved sensor camera [see here].
The curved sensor is designed to mimic the curvature of human eye, in the curved sensor light directly falls in the center of the sensor and hits the pixel in straight, that completely eliminates the need micro-lenses above the sensor surface. Curved sensors are 1,4 times more sensitive in the center and 2 times more sensitive in the corners. They live among us, yes its absolutely true, Sony already implemented the curved sensor in its first Curved sensor based compact selfie Cybershot camera KW11, the camera features a 19.2MP 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS CMOS sensor and a 21mm F2 Lens [see the announcement page here]

if they plan on using this it might change the game, having a curved sensor might give them the possibility to put a bigger sensor instead of the FF one, and we should have a FF+ using normal glass. I would buy that camera because dr will be better than any and it will be the first step to having a portable MF.
This appears to be needed for sensors bigger than APS-C – because of the excessive lens curvature sometimes giving very poor corner sharpness with those sensors.
.
I wonder how robust such sensors will be?
.
Plus (for Sony) it can sell all-new lenses and make *all* the older ones “obsolete”.
