Pentax K-50 Press Release

A Digital SLR camera with a weather-resistant, dustproof body, assuring high-quality photography with simple, user-friendly operation

Mississauga, ON – June 12, 2013

PENTAX RICOH IMAGING CANADA INC. is pleased to announce the introduction of the PENTAX K-50 Digital SLR camera. The PENTAX K-50 combines a uniquely advanced feature set, including weather-resistant, dustproof construction, with a consumer-friendly price tag and 120 colour combinations to meet an important additional demand of the creative consumer: personal style.

The PENTAX K-50 boasts outstanding basic specifications that rival many upper-class models, including high-speed continuous shooting at approximately six images per second, super-highsensitivity shooting at ISO 51200, high-precision SAFOX IXi+ autofocus with accurate subject tracking, innovative in-body shake reduction, full HD video capture and a 100% field of view. Its weather-resistant, dustproof construction assures solid performance under demanding outdoor conditions. The K-50 is perfect for families and everyday photography, complete with a wide selection of creative tools and filters for limitless personalized expressions. Plus, eye-fi card compatibility makes image sharing fast and easy. The K-50 is compatible with both rechargeable Li-Ion and AA batteries (via optional AA battery holder)* for the ultimate flexibility and accessibility to a power source when travelling or in remote locations.

The K-50 will be available in a choice of three standard body colours: black, white and red or select from a choice of 117 custom colour combinations (available by special order) to create your K-50 to match your personal style.

Two new lenses featuring simplified weather-resistant construction to enhance the reliability and dependability of the K-50 imaging system are also being introduced — the smc PENTAX-DA L 18-55mm F3.5-5.6AL WR, and the smc PENTAX-DA L 50-200 F4-5.6ED WR.

The K-50 will be available in Canada July 2013 at a suggested retail price of $799.99 for the K-50 Kit including the smc PENTAX-DA L 18-55mm F3.5-5.6AL WR Lens.

* The optional D-BH109 AA Battery Holder is required for AA-battery operation.

Major Features

Availability in 120 eye-catching colour combinations
As the only camera in the DSLR market that is available in customizable colours, the K-50 sets a new benchmark for individual personalization in the imaging industry. Consumers are able to accent their personal expression by selecting a body and grip colour that epitomizes their particular style.

Dependable weather-resistant, dustproof body
With 81 weather seals throughout the entire body, the K-50 ensures worry-free use in any weather condition or outdoor setting. The K-50’s rugged, coldproof design is also made for perfect use in wet, snowy winter conditions, at temperatures as low as -10°C. Its compact, functional body is carefully contoured with delicate curves, assuring that even a photographer with small hands will have a firm grip of the camera.

High-resolution, super-high-sensitivity shooting at ISO 51200
The K-50 features the state-of-the-art CMOS image sensor with a large image-capturing area measuring 23.7mm by 15.7mm, to assure high-speed image data readout. This image sensor is coupled with PRIME M to deliver super-high-resolution, rich-gradation digital images with approximately 16.28 effective megapixels. The K-50 also offers super-high-sensitivity shooting at a top sensitivity of ISO 51200, allowing the photographer to handhold the camera for beautiful nighttime snapshots.

Innovative SR mechanism
The PENTAX-developed SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism effectively compensates the adverse effect of camera shake to deliver sharp, blur-free images, even under shake-prone conditions such as when using a telephoto lens, shooting in the dark without flash illumination, or taking landscapes at twilight. This innovative mechanism works with almost all PENTAX interchangeable lenses — even those developed for film-format cameras.** Thanks to the SR mechanism’s flexible design, which tilts the image sensor unit in all directions, the K-50 offers several useful features to assist the photographer during shooting, including an Automatic Horizon Correction function to assure high-precision image framing and effortless adjustment of horizontal alignment; a Composition Adjustment function to allow minute adjustment of image alignment both to horizontal and vertical directions, as well as slant-wise rotation; and an ASTROTRACER mode to simplify astronomical photography in combination with the optional O-GPS1 GPS Unit.

** Lenses compatible with this mechanism: PENTAX K, KA, KAF, KAF2 and KAF3mount lenses; screw-mount lenses (with an adapter); and 645 and 67system lenses (with an adapter). Some functions may not be available with certain lenses.

High-precision autofocus with SAFOX IXi+ AF module
The K-50 features the state-of-the-art SAFOX IXi+ AF sensor module, which assures responsive, high-precision autofocus operation with 11 sensors (including nine cross-type sensors in the middle). It also features a spotbeam projector to assist AF operation at poorly lit locations. Its select-area expansion function keeps the sensor module tracking a moving subject, even when it moves out of a pre-assigned auto-tracking area, by assessing the distance data collected by neighboring focus sensors. This means not only greatly improved accuracy and speed of detecting moving subjects during autofocus operation, but also the enhanced autotracking performance of moving subjects when using a telephoto lens.

High-speed continuous shooting, at approximately six images per second
When shooting sports, stage performances or wildlife, the K-50’s high-speed continuous shooting function comes in handy. It allows the photographer to record active, fast-moving subjects in a series of images, at a maximum speed of approximately six images per second (in the JPEG recording format).

Optical finder with approximately 100% field of view
Despite its compact size, the K-50 features a glass prism finder with nearly 100% field of view and approximately 0.92-times magnification (with a 50mm F1.4 lens at infinity) to cover the entire field of view for easy focusing and framing. Since it delivers a clear view of the subject even in bright sunshine and eliminates parallax and time lag in the viewfinder image, the K-50 responds efficiently and reliably to demanding applications and subjects, such as landscapes requiring delicate, high-precision framing, and sports scenes where the timing of shutter release is critical. The in-focus point is indicated as a red point in the viewfinder for at-a-glance confirmation.

High-quality movie recording
The K-50 captures high-resolution, full HD movie clips (1920 x 1080 pixels) in the H.264 recording format, with a choice of frame rate (30, 25 or 24 frames per second). It even comes with creative image-processing tools*** like Custom Images and useful movie-recording features like an interval movie recording function, for the production of more personalized movies.

*** The frame rate may vary when nonstandard image processing is required.

Effortless, user-friendly Auto Picture and Scene modes
The PENTAX-original Auto Picture mode automatically selects the most appropriate shooting mode for a given subject or scene from Portrait, Landscape, Macro and other distinctive shooting modes. The K-50 sets all vital camera settings, including shutter speed, aperture, white balance, saturation, contrast and sharpness, allowing the photographer to concentrate on image composition and shutter opportunity. The K-50 also offers 19 Scene modes, including Night Scene Portrait, Pet and Backlight Silhouette, to simplify photographing complicated or demanding subjects and scenes by optimizing all camera settings with a simple choice of the corresponding icon on the camera’s LCD monitor.

A selection of image-processing tools for creative, personalized expression
The K-50’s custom image function allows the user to easily and quickly select the desired finishing touch for a particular image, with a choice of 11 custom images. These include Bleach Bypass to create a dramatic visual effect used in motion pictures, and Cross Process to produce fanciful, eye-catching images with dramatic colours. The K-50 also offers 19 distinctive digital filters to add distinctive visual effects to captured images and produce creative, artistic images without the need for a computer. The user can even explore new creative possibilities by applying multiple filters to a single image.

Choice of two power sources
In addition to the standard rechargeable lithium-ion battery capable of capturing approximately 480 images with a single recharge,**** the K-50 can also be powered by four AA-size batteries using the optional D-BH109 AA Battery Holder. Since AA-size batteries can be easily obtained almost anywhere around the world, there’s no need to worry about battery shortages, even when on the road.

**** Under testing conditions prescribed by PENTAX, using the D-LI109 Rechargeable Lithium-ion Battery with no flash discharges.

Press Release

PENTAX RICOH IMAGING COMPANY, LTD. is pleased to announce the launch of the PENTAX K-500 digital SLR camera. With its solid basic specifications and outstanding value for price, this new model is designed to extend the joy of high-quality digital SLR photography to everyone.

The PENTAX K-500 was developed based on the PENTAX K-50 digital SLR camera (launched in June 2013). This cost-efficient model inherits such remarkable features as a compact, lightweight, easy-to-hold body; high-resolution image reproduction with approximately 16.2 effective megapixels; super-high-sensitivity shooting at ISO 51200; and high-speed continuous shooting at approximately six images per second, making it an ideal imaging tool for all casual digital photographers.

Major Features

High-resolution, super-high-sensitivity shooting at ISO 51200

The K-500 features the state-of-the-art CMOS image sensor with a large image-capturing area measuring 23.7mm by 15.7mm, to assure high-speed image data readout. This image sensor is coupled with PRIME M — the same high-performance imaging engine incorporated in upper-class models — to deliver super-high-resolution, rich-gradation digital images with approximately 16.28 effective megapixels. The K-500 also offers super-high-sensitivity shooting at a top sensitivity of ISO 51200, allowing the photographer to handhold the camera for beautiful nighttime snapshots.

Innovative SR mechanism

The PENTAX-developed SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism effectively compensates the adverse effect of camera shake to deliver sharp, blur-free images, even under shake-prone conditions such as when using a telephoto lens, shooting in the dark without flash illumination, or taking landscapes in twilight. This innovative mechanism works with almost all PENTAX interchangeable lenses — even those developed for film-format cameras.* It is also the key to some special functions, including the ASTRO TRACER mode that simplifies astronomical photography in combination with the optional O-GPS1 GPS Unit.
* Lenses compatible with this mechanism: PENTAX K, KA, KAF, KAF2 and KAF3mount lenses; screw-mount lenses (with an adapter); and 645 and 67system lenses (with an adapter). Some functions may not be available with certain lenses.

High-speed continuous shooting, at approximately six images per second

The K-500’s high-speed continuous shooting function captures active, fast-moving subjects — such as athletes, stage performers and wildlife — in a series of images, at a maximum speed of approximately six images per second (in the JPEG recording format).

High-quality movie recording

The K-500 records high-resolution, full HD movie clips (1920 x 1080 pixels) in the H.264 recording format, with a choice of frame rate (30, 25 or 24 frames per second). It even offers creative image-processing tools** like Custom Images, and useful movie-recording features such as an interval movie recording function, for the production of more personalized movies.
** The frame rate may vary when nonstandard image processing is required.

Optical finder with approximately 100% field of view

Despite a compact body common to all entry-class models, the K-50 features a glass prism finder with nearly 100% field of view and approximately 0.92-times magnification (with a 50mm F1.4 lens at infinity) to cover the entire field of view for easy focusing and framing.

Effortless, user-friendly Auto Picture and Scene modes

The PENTAX-original Auto Picture mode automatically selects the most appropriate shooting mode for a given subject or scene from Portrait, Landscape, Macro and other distinctive shooting modes. Since the K-500 sets all vital camera settings — such as shutter speed, aperture, white balance, saturation, contrast and sharpness — the photographer can concentrate on image composition and the shutter chance. The K-500 also offers 19 Scene modes, including Night Scene Portrait, Pet and Backlight Silhouette, to simplify the photographing of subjects and scenes too complicated or too demanding for entry digital SLR photographers.

High-precision autofocus

The K-500 features the state-of-the-art SAFOX IXi+ AF sensor module, which assures responsive, high-precision autofocus operation with 11 sensors (including nine cross-type sensors in the middle). It also features a spotbeam projector to assist AF operation in poorly lit locations. Its select-area expansion function keeps the sensor module tracking a moving subject, even when it moves out of a pre-assigned auto-tracking area, by assessing distance data collected by neighboring focus sensors. As the result, not only the accuracy and speed of detecting moving subjects during autofocus operation, but also the auto-tracking performance of moving subjects when using a telephoto lens, have been greatly improved.

A selection of image-processing tools for creative, personalized expression

Pentax Q7 Press Release

PENTAX Q7

A super-compact digital interchangeable-lens camera, featuring a new extra-large image sensor for enhanced performance

PENTAX RICOH IMAGING UK LTD. is pleased to announce the launch of the PENTAX Q7 digital interchangeable-lens camera. As the flagship model in the PENTAX Q series, the Q7 is equipped with an image sensor much larger than other Q models for upgraded image quality, while retaining a super-compact, lightweight body that comfortably fits into a photographer’s hand.

The PENTAX Q7 makes digital-SLR-quality photography accessible to everyone, and thanks to a new 1/1.7-inch, back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, delivers much improved image quality. In addition, the camera also offers a host of advanced features expected in a top-of-the-range model, such as; high-sensitivity shooting, improved shake-reduction performance and effortless, user-friendly operation.

The Q7 also features an array of creative tools such as Bokeh Control and Smart Effect, which assist the photographer in easily creating personalised images.

The Q7 will be available from September. RSP TBC.

Major Features

1. Extra-large 1/1.7-inch image sensor — the largest in the Q series
Thanks to a new 1/1.7-inch, back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, the PENTAX Q7 boasts the finest image quality in the Q series. By coupling this image sensor with the state-of-the-art Q ENGINE high-speed imaging engine, the Q7 not only offers high-sensitivity shooting at an ISO 12800 and delivers beautiful images with faithful reproduction of gradation and texture, it also minimises annoying noise effectively at all ISO sensitivity levels.

Its autofocus accuracy during low-illumination shooting has also been improved, assuring pinpoint focus on the subject even at the faintest light level of EV 0. Because of its larger sensor, the angle of view for the Q7 is wider than that of its sister models, even when the same lens is mounted.* When the 02 Standard Zoom lens is mounted, for instance, the angle of view is 23mm to 69mm in the 35mm format (compared to 27.5mm to 83mm for the Q10). Likewise, when the Adapter Q for K-mount Lenses is used with the Q7, the focal length of the mounted lens is extended by approximately 4.6 times (compared to approximately 5.5 times for the Q10).
* With Q-mounted lenses, the shift in angle of view may vary depending on the lens type.

2. Outstanding operability
Thanks to the incorporation of a new Q ENGINE which provides a 10% improvement in clock frequency compared to existing engines, and optimised algorithm, the Q7 features a shortened start-up time lag of approximately one second. It also means much-improved response during shooting, such as a shortened time lag between exposures. The Quick Dial, to which the photographer can assign as many as four favourite functions, is now more versatile and functional than ever before, with the addition of AF/MF switching, focus assist ON/OFF and ND filter ON/OFF to the list of assignable functions.

3. Dependable SR mechanism
Featuring a latest gyro sensor, the Q7’s upgraded SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism compensates camera shake by as much as three shutter steps. As a result, the Q7 produces sharp, blur-free images even under conditions prone to camera shake, such as when using a telephoto lens, shooting in the dark without flash illumination, or capturing landscapes in the twilight.

4. High-quality, Full HD movie recording, even during high-sensitivity shooting
Thanks to the improvements in the image-processing algorithm, the Q7 captures beautiful Full HD movie clips (1920 x 1080 pixels, at 30 frames per second, in the H.264 recording format) with minimal noise, even during high-sensitivity recording at ISO 12800. A new interval HD movie recording function adds more creativity to visual expression. The user can also take advantage of advanced image-processing tools including the Smart Effect modes,**  an array of in-body movie editing tools, and autofocus operation during movie shooting.
** The frame rate may vary when a selected Smart Effect mode requires nonstandard image processing.

5. High-resolution, wide-view 3.0-inch LCD monitor
The Q7 features a high-resolution 3.0-inch, 3:2-proportion LCD monitor with approximately 460,000 dots. The monitor has been treated with AR (Anti-Reflection) coating to offer sharp, bright images even in bright sunshine by effectively minimising glare and reflection on the screen. Since its wide-view design makes it possible to view the image from 170 degrees horizontally and vertically, the user has a clear view of the image even when facing the monitor diagonally.

6. A selection of image-processing tools to create personalised images

(1) Custom Images to add distinctive finishing touches

The Custom Image function adds a distinctive finishing touch to an image, to more faithfully express the photographer’s creative intention or reproduce the ambience of a specific scene. The user has a choice of 11 Custom Image modes, including Bleach Bypass, which produces a dramatic, movie-like finish.

(2) Digital filter function to apply artistic visual effects
The digital filter function lets the photographer apply a variety of visual effects without requiring a computer. Of the total 17 digital filters, 11 filters including Toy Camera, Invert Colour and Posterisation can be applied during the shooting of still images and movie clips, while the remaining six are applicable only during image editing. The user can even apply different filters one after another to a single image to produce more inventive visual effects.

(3) Smart Effect function for simple dial control of finishing touches

Using the Quick-Dial positioned on the camera’s front panel, the user can quickly and effortlessly add the desired finishing touch to an image, while previewing the applied effect on the LCD monitor. From nine Smart Effect modes — including Brilliant Colour for a high-saturation finish, and Cross Process for a dramatic unique-toned finish — the user can assign four favourite modes to the dial in advance.

7. Effortless Bokeh control
The Q7’s unique Bokeh control function allows the user to purposely make the subject stand out by automatically assessing the relative distance between the in-focus subject and objects in the field of view. Since this function simplifies the advanced, SLR-calibretechnique of intentional defocusing, even a first-time digital photographer can effortlessly capture high-quality images with beautifully defocused foregrounds and/or backgrounds.

8. Simple, user-friendly Auto Picture and Scene modes
The Q7 features the PENTAX-original Auto Picture mode, which automatically selects the most appropriate shooting mode from such options as Portrait, Landscape and Macro for a given subject or scene, then optimises all affecting parameters, such as shutter speed, aperture, white balance, saturation, contrast and sharpness. It also provides 21 Scene modes including Night Scene Portrait, Pet and Backlight Silhouette, allowing even an entry digital photographer to choose the best exposure mode for a complicated subject or scene with the simple choice of an icon on the LCD monitor.

9. Flexible exposure system available only with digital lens-interchangeable camera systems
The Q7’s comprehensive exposure system provides all the advantages and flexibility of a digital lens-interchangeable camera system. To accommodate user preferences and varying photographic applications, it offers a choice of four different exposure modes: the all-purpose Programmed AE (P) mode, which automatically selects an optimum combination of aperture and shutter speed; the Shutter-Priority AE (Tv), Aperture-Priority AE (Av) and manual Exposure (M) modes, which allow the photographer to more faithfully express specific creative intentions on resulting images.

10. DRII mechanism for effective dust removal
The Q7’s DR II (Dust Removal II) mechanism effectively prevents annoying dust spots from spoiling captured images, even after the user changes lenses out in the open. Like the PENTAX K-5 II and 645D digital SLR cameras, it employs a highly effective supersonic vibration mechanism, which vibrates the image sensor at high speed to shake the dust off its surface.

11. Outline of PENTAX Q7 colour-to-order service
The new PENTAX Q7 colour-to-order service allows customers to choose from 120 camera colour combinations (including three standard models). The colour-to-order service has been extremely popular as a unique, stylish way for PENTAX camera users to express individual taste in their photographic system.

When ordering a PENTAX-02 STANDARD ZOOM lens kit with a black, silver or yellow camera body, the lens will be the same colour as the camera body. The Lens Kits ordered with any other camera body colour will come with silver lenses.

12. Other features
I.                     Compatibility with Eye-Fi wireless LAN SD memory cards
II.                   High-speed continuous shooting of up to five images per second
III.                  HDR mode to composite a photo with extra-wide dynamic range from three images of varying exposures
