Canon has registered a PATENT, a Camera that is VERY similar to the DJI Osmo Pocket Creator Kit. The design, display screen, and camera position look almost very identical.
Publication number: P2024112386, Patent publication date: 2024-08-21, Patent name: Photographic equipment, Patent application date: 2023-02-08.
I have a big fear that if Canon announces such a camera, they may face legal trouble for copying the exact design of an existing camera. Although I am not a legal expert, it appears to be very similar—approximately 95%—to the DJI Osmo Pocket Creator Kit.
Canon has been working on multiple sets of vlogging cameras for the past few years. This is not the first time Canon has explored out-of-the-box solutions. Three years ago, they published a series of patents that included a gimbal camera design with an interchangeable lens mount and a unique and innovative complex vlogging camera with a very flexible display screen.
When might it come out?
Generally, a patent typically takes two to three years to become a real product if the camera maker or any company is seriously working on it. So, we might expect such a camera to arrive sometime in late 2026 or early 2027.

Is Canon just focusing on patents instead of real products? They have so many patents, but when will we see them in actual products? Or are they more interested in setting patent records by filing over 5,000 patents each year?

Oh, you’re missing the real deal! I can totally sense what Canon’s up to. Remember when Nikon dabbled with VIDEO RAW and got hit by a lawsuit from RED? In the end, Nikon practically ended up owning RED. Well, here’s the twist—soon, DJI will probably sue Canon for ripping off their designs, and after a couple of years, Canon might just own DJI too!
Canon’s market value is around $20-25 billion, while DJI’s valuation is estimated to be around $15-20 billion.
NOT POSSIBLE FOR Canon to acquire DJI given the current market dynamics and the size of both companies.
Interesting to see Canon stepping into the compact creator kit space with innovations! and With Canon’s imaging expertise, combining it with a pocket-sized design like DJI’s could lead to a fantastic all-in-one content creation tool. Excited to see how this patent evolves and if it’ll bring more options for vloggers and creators. Canon seems to be taking innovation seriously!

The issue is that camera manufacturers struggle to achieve the level of computational photography seen in smartphones due to hardware limitations. As a result, whatever they announce will always fall short compared to smartphones and drones.
