According to latest sensor test details coming out by Photons to Photo website. The dynamic range of E-M1X camera is less compared to the 2+ year old Olympus E-M1 Mark II camera. Btw, we do know that both camera uses same sensor and AF system.
So, it’s a little surprise for me at least, that Olympus E-M1X Dynamic range isn’t better than of Olympus E-M1 Mark II.

Unbelievable, sure there is no calculation error … or maybe it’s just the tolerance of the measurement…
Whatever, dynamic range is overrated anyway… says a Fuji X shooter.
m4/3 have shown about a quarter the improvement of FF and APS-C sensors in the last 5 years, just sad. The reason for the lopwer DR could be higher read noise due to higher clocked ADC’s for example. The Sony A9 DR is over 1EV lower than the A7RIII for that same reason, it has a read noise 4x higher. Anyway whatever, poor effort for a $3K camera.
if sensor is not the issue, this can be the new processing unit. Understanding the reason can be crucial for making any conclusions. I would think the reason is in the way of creating the output signal depending on ISO settings. May be, Olympus’ engineers have changed the manner of creating the output. But who can say whether or not this is worse. After all, digital iso is not at all analog one. Theoretically it is possible to change setting so that the image made with e-m1xat 800 iso equivalent to the image made with e-m1 at 900. Would this be against the accepted norms? not sure
Guess I will stick with my OM-1 and OM-2 cameras
After going to photons to photo I also checked the Photographic Dynamic Range Shadow Improvement plot, the E-M1x is actually nearly ISOless, much more so than the E-M1 II. This means there is basically no need to use ISO’s higher than 400, you only gain a little shadow improvement using a higher ISO, but the DR is much worse. So not all bad news.
