Firmware Update

Canon EOS R Hacked By Magic Lantern‘s

Well, Magic developer team always work to improve the technical functionalities of the camera by unlocking the capabilities they actually have.  We are getting news that Magic Lantern‘s developer team now working on EOS R camera. Magic Lantern‘s A1ex and EOSHD are doing some early test on the camera with beta firmware versions. Hopefully, we will get a working firmware version soon.

Well my only wish list is to fix the 1.74x crop issue the in the 4K video recording mode. And if they are able to grab 10bit internally it will be great achievement for them.

A1ex from ML :

They changed something in the [firmware]file format, possibly also the encryption. Whatever worked on all models from 50D to M50, it no longer works here. The error message is the same as on previous models and that’s encouraging; however, I’m unable to figure it out by brute forcing.

Magic Lantern‘s A1ex and EOSHD made some tests with Magic Lantern on the brand new Canon EOS R. And it appears to work. Or at least we have a proof of concept.

If Magic Lantern knew as much about camera firmware as Canon, they wouldn’t be relegated to hacking cameras designed by other people. Before you get too excited about bypassing that 1.74x crop, consider what happens when Sony uses the whole full-frame sensor recording 4K video. …The Sonys get hot — VERY hot. Their operator manuals warn that using your full-frame Sony to record 4K video for an extended period of time can blister your hands. Fried circuit boards have been a problem for Sony.

The Magic Lantern hack may set up your Canon for a short life, too. An un-hacked Canon full-frame can record 4K video all day long. Do you really want to give that up?

Well, If they are able to bring DPAF support in 4K mode in EOS M50.. I will buy that camera.

I can remember the Thread that ML has hacked 5div…. and until now nothing happend. No ML-Version for 5div….guess before ML will get all that this eos r needs to be competitive, everyone has bought pana S1. Canon is Game over, they made the nokia move – means they think, they dont Need to respect customers needs.
And even if ML will release afireware next 2 months, you have a hacked firmware, with features, others have without hacking and risking a 2000+ bucks body.
When people have switched to pana, BM, fuji, nikon, that are all superior compared to eos r, they will have invested in new lenses and then it is to late for the dinosaur of the past years. The exodus has begun.

Canon is Game over! I have been waiting for ML on 5D IV for a long time too. I will be happy with my Nikon Z7, 12bit ProresRaw 4K, NO 1.7x crop factor and IBIS as well !!!
