Red epic Dragon and Helium become the first camera to cross 100 marks barrier in DXO mark lab test score. Till now the Sony A7R II camera was the undisputed winner of the DXO mark lab. But is it logical to test a $59K camera with $3K camera ? We don’t think so…
The Red Helium camera features of 35.4 megapixel CMOS sensor and it can capture 8k @ 75 fps and 8K RAW @ 60 frames. The Camera can also capture 120 FPS at 4K resolution. Take a look at the detailed specification of the camera
- 35.4MP CMOS sensor
- 75 fps 8K capture at 2.4:1 (8392 x 3456)
- 60 fps RAW full 8K resolution
- 120 fps at 4K resolution (240 fps at 2K)
- 300 MB/second data readout
- Captures in 16-bit RECODE RAW or Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHR/HD
- Super 35-format sensor (29.90 mm x 15.77 mm)
- Integrated dual-channel audio
- Integrated REDLINK WiFi antenna
- Upgrade path to WEAPON 8K VV (when available)
After the arrival of RED the Sony A7RII got slipped on third place in the table. But the red has established itself in the hearts of cinematographers.
But, is it fair to compare $29K or $59K camera with a $3K consumer camera? Share your thoughts with us. From our point of view DXO Mark should have a new category of PRO Cinema cameras and in that table they should stack up RED Dragon, Canon EOS C700 and Sony FS7 Mark II etc.

Why Not, If you have money in your pocket then you can get $59K camera and no one is stopping you. Don’t blame RED or DXO Mark. They have done the right thing, they are just showing us the best thing that money can buy.
I don’t agree anymore. It’s look like blunt promotion of a $59K camera, DXO Mark should create a separate categories.
In my POV Sony A7R II is still the Low Light King of DXOLab.
Aesthetics may have to be a rated category in the near future. One has to figure once a certain dollar price point is reached that the camera bodies will not scare women, small children, and animals. These red cameras may take the prize at the bottom of the scale for overall looks. /// It is the same with audio gear. Most everyone enjoys the sounds of an Altec Lansing Voice of the Theatre loudspeaker system. They are found on E bay too. However they do not pass the test for aesthetics unless you make your home in some large old warehouse.
So they aren’t really comparable in that sense. It’s still interesting to see what temporal image processing can do…These video cameras don’t work like still cameras. High speed video sensors allows processing on time axis, which can greatly help to fight against the signal noise and hence better image quality.
Olympus E-M1 II been tested by DXO? Why so late ?
Let’s be honest, E-M1 is a $2000 micro four thirds camera is hardly something most people can or will buy.
Red vs Sony – Can anyone tell me how to use RED EPIC or Helium in day to day shoot ?
