Sony new 18MP BSI Sensor

18MP sensorSony announced new (IMX118CQT) 18MP BSI (Type 1/2.3) Sensor for use in consumer digital cameras, currently Sony is using this sensor in its TX 200V ultra slim camera.

Compared to current Sony (IMX078CQK) 12 MP BSI CMOS sensor the new (IMX118CQT) 18MP BSI Sensor is 80% faster, consumes 35% less energy and produces low noise.

Main features
■ Diagonal 7.76 mm (Type 1/2.3) 18.47M-effective pixels (4968H × 3718V)
■ Pixel size: 1.26 µm unit pixel
■ Supports 18.47M-pixel imaging at approx. 24 frame/s
■ Back-illuminated CMOS image sensor that achieves both higher pixel count and high picture quality
■ Achieves low-power readout mode (1632H × 408V, 30 frame/s) for live view

Sony Alpha A600 Coming

Sony A580SonyA600 DSLR (NOT SLT) is coming with proper mirror, optical viewfinder and 18.4 mp APS-C CMOS sensor to replace existing Sony A580 DSLR, the A600 will have a lower price than the Sony A65.

Rumored Specification of Sony A600

  • -New body design, similar to A65 in size
  • -Larger brighter OVF than the A580 (still penta-mirror, cost savings) at .92x magnification “w/data overlay” @ 97% coverage
  • -Similar live view system as the A450 (away goes the second sensor and mechanisms that cost extra money), more traditional  main sensor live view with faster contrast detect AF than previous Sony DSLRS, this time for all lenses
  • -updated 18.4 mp APS-C CMOS sensor
  • -up to 8fps capture with full metering and af capabilities (A580 could do only 5fps with metering/af)
  • -same battery as A580, A65, A77
  • -new “wide coverage” 15 point AF system (new type with 5 cross type sensors)
  • -full 1080p HD video will be included (no specifics on this)
  • -Dual card slots (no specifics on type)
  • -New pop up flash (not sure how this will work, assume bounce and regular?)
  • -Silver and Black model (depending on territory)
  • -New quieter mirror box mechanism and shutter

sony full frameSony has confirmed at CP + show that they are making a full-frame replacement for its flagship A900 DSLR, According to Sony alpha rumor the Sony new full-frame is expected to arrive in September 2012, the A99 will have 24 Megapixel Sensor and other Full Frame camera with 36 megapixel will arrive in early/mid 2013
