Canon Patent 18mm f/1.0 and 25mm f/1.2 RF lens

Finally Canon is going crazy with new FF Mirrorless lenses, Canon working on ultra-bright upto F1.0 wide-angle lens for their RF Mount. In general we have seen camera company generally takes 1 or 2 years of time to to convert a patent into a real product, so we have to wait for it.

  • Canon goes full throttle on astrophotography with their dedicated camera and with ultra wide and fast FF lens. Only Fuji has some good glass (APS-C 16mm/f1.4) and third party Samyang with APS-C 12mm/f2 and 14mm/f1.4. If this is FF, it’s gonna destroy Sony, considering the fact that Sony’s anti-noise algorithm is a hungry star eater.

    @Teodore:
    Eek, why would you coult Samyang aps-c lenses for Fuji but not Sony in which mount they existed even earlier?

  • FairlyTremblebuns

    These lenses look like they’ll be insanely expensive just judging by the optical schematics—not that I’m an expert in this area—but look at the size of all those elements. Compared to a more traditional 18mm f/2.8, these are enormous.

    It almost looks like a “patent” created only for PR purposes, as we witness here on this website, because it’s not like lens manufacturers didn’t know what an 18mm f/1 would require—just that the size, weight and, most importantly, expense would be far beyond what even a small niche would likely be willing to pay. And this is assuming the technology even exists to create these types of elements with the kind of aberration tolerances people would expect from an f/1 lens?

    So, why not patent an 18mm f/.7? And throw in a 24-105mm f/1.8 full frame zoom, too? Canon might as well really swing for the fences while they’re busy drawing up these fantasy lenses. Forget about developing a FF MILC worth using with these lenses—that’s way more work (and far less exciting anyway).
