Carl Zeiss launched its annual global photography competition. This year’s theme is “Light is my language”. Photographers and photo enthusiasts are invited to illustrate and capture the theme from their own perspective. Anyone can participate, provided the images are shot with ZEISS lenses. It doesn’t matter if the picture was taken with an SLR camera or a camera phone.
“Light is the most important creative means in photography. Every photographer speaks his own language and ultimately expresses his creative messages through light and shadow,” explains Martin Klottig, Marketing Manager of the Carl Zeiss Camera Lens Division. There are many ways of expressing one’s creativity through light and shadow. With light reflections, messages in bokeh (the out-of-focus area of an image), colorful accents derived from long exposure times or the soft glimmer of barely discernable light, photographers give their images meaning. “We are looking for photographers who can make something visible that would otherwise remain hidden. The award-winning pictures will exude both creativity and conscious composition,” adds Klottig.
For the first time, anyone will be able to follow the competition during its entire duration on Flickr, the global online photo community. Participants in the competition should upload their best image that fits the “Light is my language” theme and tag it with the keyword “ZEISSContest2010” on the official Carl Zeiss group on Flick.
The jury
Pictures can be submitted until Sunday, January 16, after which a jury will select the 10 best images. The jury will assess pictures on their creativity and technical execution of the concept. The highest number of points will be given to exciting images that have been created before and during the shutter release, with as little revising and adapting of the image as possible.
What you can win
From the 10 shortlisted images, the Flickr community will then select the three best images by designating them as a “favorite”.
- First prize is your choice of a ZEISS SLR lens.
- Second place is worth a cinemizer Plus, including a Nokia N8.
- The third place winner will receive a Sony DSC-TX9 compact camera with ZEISS optics.

This contest is centered on your own creative perspective. It is not limited by subject matter, but extra effort should be taken to show a unique perspective. This can be literal, as in a bird’s eye or worm’s eye view, or conceptual, as an interesting way of viewing the world around us. Have fun with it! (Note: I’ve attached some images that show different types of perspective…just to help get the creative juices flowing )
The winning image(s) will be selected based on both overall image quality and the introduction of new and exciting perspectives.
