As we all know, over the past decade, smartphones have dominated camera sales. Specifically, the compact cameras were the ones that got major hits with the arrival of smartphones. But, surprisingly, from the beginning of 2025, we have seen a great demand for Compact cameras among Gen Z, and this huge demand is now doing a dramatic revival of Canon’s compact lineup.
As per the latest sales BCN+R Report from August 2025, the Canon compact camera line not only reclaimed the top spot, but it has seen tremendous growth in unit sales, which is up to 187.4% and it is expected it can rise to 248.7% if it moves in the same direction in the upcoming months.
“Canon’s market share for compact digital cameras is skyrocketing. In July, the company was ranked sixth with a 5.3% market share according to the BCN rankings, but in August it made a tremendous recovery, rising to 27.1%. It easily regained the top spot. The driving force behind this is the PowerShot G7 X Mark III, for which orders resumed in August. Until July, this camera had only been sold in small quantities through distribution stock. In August, it suddenly shot to the top spot with a 15.6% market share.”

The Numbers Don’t Lie: A Market Share Expansion
Canon has made an amazing comeback, which was never ever expected by anyone, including their diehard fans. The market share of Canon compact cameras was only 5.3% but as soon as we entered the month of August 2025, the overall market share of Canon compact cameras had moved from 5.3% to 27.1%, so that was a big comeback made by Canon, specifically in the compact camera market.
Over the past decade, compact camera sales were crushed by smartphones, budget DSLRs, and mirrorless cameras. But suddenly, in 2025, we are witnessing a rise in the demand for compact cameras.
Globally, compact sales are skyrocketing, on an upward trajectory, projected to grow from $6.81 billion in 2024 to $7.12 billion in 2025, driven by renewed interest in specialized devices.
Japan is a key indicator for camera trends, with Kodak leading at 21.7% in the first half of the year. However, Canon’s aggressive push has flipped the script, and Canon has become No.1 in August 2025.
Canon’s compact market performance:
| Month/Period | Market Share | Ranking | Key Driver |
| July 2025 | 5.3% | 6th | Limited stock availability |
| August 2025 | 27.1% | 1st | Resumed orders for popular models |
| Full Year 2024 | 23.4% | 1st | Consistent leadership pre-surge |
| H1 2025 (Japan) | ~21.7% (pre-surge) | 2nd | Competition from Kodak |
Sales in August were up 187% [year-on-year in terms of units]
- Canon held the top spot in the compact digital camera market share last year with 23.4%. The company’s leading market share has had a major impact on the overall market as it accelerates the trend toward compact digital cameras. Sales in August were up 187.4% year-on-year in terms of units and a whopping 248.7% in terms of value.
Without a doubt, Canon has captured a significant market share in the compact camera market like never before. At the very same time, what are the prime models responsible for this growth? And this is the biggest surprise for you: specifically, models like the Canon G7X Mark III have occupied 15.6% of the entire market share alone in Japan in August 2025.
Although the models are still available in very limited quantities, especially in the USA, some of the sellers on Amazon are asking for more than $1000 for the same G7X Mark III camera, which was available for $849 a few days back.
Another model responsible for these sales figures is the Canon PowerShot SX740 HS camera, loaded with 40x optical zoom and also able to capture 4K videos. The camera features a vari-angle display screen, so you can also create content with this camera. And finally, you should not forget the Canon V10 as well as the Canon V1 camera. Among these, the Canon V10 is quite a bit more popular in the market with its one-inch sensor, compact body for vlogging, and affordable price.

Canon announced the ELPH 360 HS on September 10, 2025.
Canon is now in the mood to cash in on the opportunity they are getting, so they have reannounced a new compact model, the ELPH 360 HS. This model retains all the core specifications without any major update, which was expected: the 20.2MP sensor, 12x optical zoom (25-300mm equivalent), and Wi-Fi connectivity. We do still believe that it will become a big hit soon, since it appeals to budget-conscious buyers—those who want a camera that performs better than a smartphone, features optical zoom, and stays within budget.

Canon’s Master Plan: Expanding Production and Innovation
Canon’s financial reports explicitly state plans to “expand production of compact cameras.” Take a look at what Canon said a while ago, [Before August, in their financial report covered in our article published on Aug 2, 2025]:
“For compact cameras, we will expand sales of the new PowerShot V series model and will also increase production of conventional models where supply is not keeping up with demand,” Canon stated.
Now, once they restored the production of old compacts, the sales volume from 5.3% reached 27.1% in August 2025. And since such a high level of jump is clearly visible, as per the latest reliable reports, compact cameras like Canon SX750 HS and G7X Mark IV are expected to arrive in 2026, adding more strength to the Canon lineup.
In addition to the launch of the new V series, Canon appears to be strengthening sales of compact digital cameras overall,
