Canon Game-Changer: Ultra-High-Res Sensor with Unmatched Low-Light Capability

In Canon’s latest patent, we can see that Canon is working to improve the low-light sensitivity of their sensors, specifically with dense photodiode architecture. This becomes particularly important when pixel sizes decrease and pixel count increases, as is the case with higher-resolution sensors. It’s a significant challenge for camera makers to maintain proper low-light sensitivity under these conditions. To overcome this, Canon is developing new technology to enhance the performance of its sensors.

Canon Latest Patent Summary

  1. Introducing a light shielding layer in the optical waveguide around each pixel to prevent light leakage and color mixing between pixels, and to preserve phase difference information.
  2. Forming an optical waveguide from near the surface of a photoelectric conversion unit to the upper end of an insulating film to prevent light scattering and absorption by wiring inside the pixel.
  3. Adjusting the refractive index of a non-reflective film on the bottom surface of the optical waveguide of a pixel corresponding to each color to manage variations in light receiving sensitivity between colors.
